West Lane is a neighbourhood in West Central Middlesbrough. Bounded by Whinney Banks to the south, Newport & Gresham to the north, Linthorpe to the east and the A19 to the west, it is within the Ayresome ward and within the TS5 postcode area. Along with Whinney Banks the Ayresome ward has just under 7,000 residents. Guitarist Micky Moody was born in Barnaby Avenue, which was later demolished to make way for the A19-A66 interchange.[citation needed]

Before the construction of the A19-A66 interchange, West Lane constituted a northerly extension of Acklam Road to Newport Road, the main arterial road connecting central Middlesbrough with Thornaby-on-Tees and Stockton-on-Tees. The construction cut West Lane into two parts separated by the A66.
