Biography[]

Bulsiewicz was raised in a Jesuit-educated family.[1] He attended Vanderbilt University where he obtained his Bachelor of Science in chemistry in 2002. He qualified M.D. from Georgetown University School of Medicine in 2006.[2][3] In 2010, he obtained a Master of Science in Clinical Investigation (MSCI) from Northwestern University and a certificate in nutrition from Cornell University.[2][4] He was chief medical resident at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and chief gastroenterology fellow at the University of North Carolina Hospitals.[5] He is board-certified in gastroenterology and internal medicine and is affiliated with East Cooper Medical Center and Roper St. Francis Mount Pleasant Hospital.[6] Since 2016 he has worked as a gastroenterologist for Lowcountry Gastroenterology Associates in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.[2][6]

Bulsiewicz is a member of the American Medical Association, American College of Physicians and the American Gastroenterological Association.[2] He is a vegan in his personal life and lives with his wife and two children in Charleston, South Carolina.[7][8]

Fiber Fueled[]

Bulsiewicz is the author of Fiber Fueled (2020) which promotes a high-fiber plant-based diet that challenges recent keto and paleo diet fads.[9] The book argues that gut health is the key to boosting metabolism, balancing hormones and reducing inflammation and the best way to do this is by consuming dietary fiber from a diverse variety of colourful plants.[9] The book states that dietary fiber fuels gut microbiota by creating short-chain fatty acids that have proven to promote weight loss, lower cholesterol, improve brain function and prevent cancer and diabetes.[9]

Bulsiewicz has cited populations in the Blue zones as consuming plant-based diets for longevity.[10] He has commented that "If you look at the healthiest populations on the planet in modern times, they’re in the five blue zones, and all five blue zones are 90 percent plant based. So, they are not necessarily vegan, but they are plant-predominant in a way where the meat is not the centerpiece. The plant is the centerpiece. The meat is the side show."[7]

Bulsiewicz has recommended fermented foods for gut health such as kombucha and sauerkraut.[11]
