First-seeded Martina Navratilova defeated defending champion Chris Evert, 6–1, 6–3, in the final to win the women's singles tennis title at the 1983 US Open. Her win meant that she completed the career Grand Slam.

Jo Durie reached the semifinal, the last time a British female player did so until Johanna Konta repeated the achievement at the 2016 Australian Open; Durie was also the last British player to reach the semifinals of the US Open until Emma Raducanu did so in 2021.
