The 2021–22 I-League (also known as Hero I-League for sponsorship reasons) will be the 15th season of I-League, one of the top tier Indian professional football leagues, since its establishment in 2007. The tournament will be hosted in Kolkata due to COVID-19 pandemic situation in India. Two teams of I-League 2021-22 will be offered promotion to ISL, and champions will qualify for 2023 AFC Cup.

Gokulam Kerala are the defending champions of 2020–21 season.[1]

Changes from last season[]

[]

One club will be promoted from the 2020–21 I-League 2nd Division.

Via bidding[]

On 5 June 2020, All India Football Federation issued an invitation to accept bids for new clubs to join the League from 2020 onwards,[2] and on 12 August Sreenidi Deccan FC were granted playing rights directly in 2021–22 I-league.[3]

Relegated clubs[]

NEROCA were relegated after finishing 11th in the previous season, but were reinstated by AIFF after viewing the situation of COVID-19 pandemic in India.[4]

Format[]

Due to COVID-19 pandemic, this season's league format is shortened, just like the last season. All teams will face each other once in first leg of the league, then they will be divided into two different groups. According to points table from first leg, top seven teams will face each other once again in the championship stage, where the team with most points (cumulative points collected from all eighteen matches) will be declared league winner and qualify for 2023 AFC Cup group stage. The other six teams will play against each other in relegation stage, where team with the lowest points (cumulative points collected from all seventeen matches) will be relegated to .[5]
