Switzerland was represented by Piero Esteriore and MusicStars in the Eurovision Song Contest 2004 with the song "Celebrate".

Before Eurovision[]

Eurosong 2004[]

Eurosong 2004 was the Swiss national final format that selected Switzerland's entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2004. The national final was a collaboration between three broadcasters in Switzerland: the Swiss-German broadcaster Schweizer Fernsehen (DRS), the Swiss-French broadcaster Télévision Suisse Romande (TSR), and the Swiss-Italian broadcaster Radiotelevisione svizzera (TSI).

Selection process[]

The selection process took place in two stages before the finalists for the live show and ultimately the winner are selected. The first stage of the competition included DRS, TSR and TSI each conducting varying selections in order to determine the candidates they submitted for the second stage of the competition. Each broadcaster submitted four candidates and the twelve artists and songs proceed to the second stage, the televised national final, where the winning artist and song was selected to represent Switzerland in Istanbul.

DRS selection[]

The top four contestants of the casting show MusicStar were selected by DRS for the national final. The four candidates selected from the DRS selection for the national final were "Something New" performed by Carmen Fenk, "The Ghost of You" performed by Daniela Brun, "By Your Side" performed by Mario Pacchioli and "Celebrate" performed by Piero Esteriore and the MusicStars.

TSR selection[]

Following an internal selection, the four candidates selected from the TSR selection for the national final were "Le monde danse" performed by Caroline Agostinio, "L'île de lumière" performed by Fanny, "Je rêve d'un monde" performed by Lorenzo Marra and "Fly Away" performed by Tiffen.

TSI selection[]

Following an internal selection, the four candidates selected from the TSI selection for the national final were "You Are Pretty" performed by A-live, "Dove nascono gli amori" performed by Antonella Lafortezza, "Heb ab" performed by Irina and "Sicuramente uomini" performed by Mauro Sabbioni.

National final[]

Eurosong 2004 took place on 6 March 2004 at the TSR studios in Geneva, hosted by Jean-Marc Richard.[1] The winner was selected over two rounds of regional televoting. In the first round, the top six were selected to advance to the second round. In the second round, the results of the first round were aggregated to the second and "Celebrate" performed by Piero Esteriore and the MusicStars were selected as the winners.[2]

At Eurovision[]

For the Eurovision Song Contest 2004, a semi-final round was introduced in order to accommodate the influx of nations that wanted to compete in the contest. Due to missing the 2003 contest, Switzerland had to compete in the semi-final of the 2004 Contest. The singer had a very subtle performance with simple choreography. They performed third, following Belarus and preceding the Latvia the song finished last with 0 points at the semi-final.[3] Therefore, Switzerland had to compete in the semi-final again in ESC 2005.
