Digital transformation (DX) is the adoption of digital technology by a company to improve business processes, value for customers and innovation.[1][2][3]
Background[]
Digitization is typically defined as the process of converting analog information into digital form. This is achieved using an analog-to-digital converter, for example in image scanner and sampling of music. The term may also refer to manual information digitization, for example of illustrations using a digitizer tablet.
With the introduction of the World Wide Web, the scope, dimension, scale, speed and effects of digitization fundamentally changed, resulting in accelerated transformation of society and its institutions.[citation needed] In 2000,[citation needed] the term "digitization" began to be used more widely for the introduction of IT by governments and companies.
Usage[]
Industries where digital transformation may occur include:
- Online shopping (according to one prediction, this market could grow by $1.5 trillion USD by 2025)[4]
- E-learning
- Electronic medical records
- Supply chains
- Government Digital Services
The DX process presents both challenges and opportunities.[5][6][7][8] When planning for digital transformation, organizations must factor in the cultural changes required when adopting unfamiliar technologies.[9]
A 2015 report stated that "maturing digital businesses are focused on integrating digital technologies, such as social, mobile, analytics and cloud, in the service of transforming how their businesses work. Less-mature digital businesses are focused on solving discrete business problems with individual digital technologies."[10] By 2017, one study found that less than 40% of industries had become digitized, despite higher use of these technologies in media, retail, and high tech.[11]
