Erandio is a station of line 1 of Metro Bilbao. It is located in the neighbourhood of Altzaga, in the municipality of Erandio. It was opened on 11 November 1995.

History[]

The station, originally named Desierto-Erandio, opened in 1887 as part of the Bilbao-Las Arenas railway, which then connected the city of Bilbao with the seaside town of Getxo. Starting in 1904 the line was expanded to Plentzia, having the station of Bilbao-Aduanas at the southern end of line. The station was originally an open air station with two side platforms located in the middle of Erandio. The station before was Luchana and the station after was Axpe-Udondo.

In 1977 the FTS network was transferred to the public company FEVE and in 1982 to the recently created Basque Railways. After the transfer, it was announced that sections of the Bilbao-Plencia line would be renewed and transformed into the first line of Metro Bilbao (specifically the section between Deusto and Plentzia), and thus management of the station facilities was transferred to CTB (Consortium for Biscayan Transport) in 1995.[1] The station, then renamed to simply Erandio, was the first station of the former Bilbao-Plentzia railway to be made underground, as designed by designed by Navarrese architect Francisco Javier Sáenz de Oiza. [2]

Station layout[]

Erandio is an underground station with two side platforms. Given that its design and construction predate those of the rest of the network, it does not follow the typical cavern-like style shared by many of the other underground stations of the network.
