Etxebarri is a station of line 1 and line 2 of Metro Bilbao. It is the south terminus of line 1. The station is located in the municipality of Etxebarri, part of the Bilbao metropolitan area and it was opened in 2005. The station is on Fuenlabrada street, next to a park and ride parking facility.

The Euskotren Trena commuter railway network also has a Etxebarri station on its E1 line, but unlike other nearby stations which connect the E1 to the Metro's line 3, these are not at the same location – there is a distance of about 550 metres (600 yd) between them.

Services[]

Metro services[]

The station is served by the line 1 to Ibarbengoa and Plentzia, being this station its terminus; and also the line 2 from Basauri to Santurtzi. Passengers willing to interchange from one line to the other may do so in this station or in any other until San Inazio.

Bus services[]

The bus services are provided by Etxebarribus, a municipal bus service managed by the Etxebarri city hall. The metro station is the starting point of the two lines of the service; line 1 connects the station with the neighbourhood of Santa Marina, crossing the main urban area of the city, while line 2 joins the metro station with the Legizamon area.[1]

Future[]

The original project of the line 5 of the metro network was unveiled in 2008, with the final project presented in 2010. It involved the creation of a new underground line between the cities of Etxebarri and Galdakao, ultimately connecting with the Galdakao-Usansolo hospital.[2] This original proyect determined the Etxebarri station to be the head of the new line, where it would connect with the existing two lines of the system.[3] The economic crisis that has since affected the region has delayed the project and altered some aspects of it. In May 2018, the Basque Nationalist Party and the Socialist Party of the Basque Country presented a new proposal which suggested the possibility of taking advantage of the existing overground rail infrastructure between Etxebarri and Galdakao currently managed by Euskotren Trena in place of the original underground project.[4] According to the political institutions, a final decision has not yet been taken.[4]
