Urduliz is a station in line 1 of Metro Bilbao located in the municipality of Urduliz. Originally an overground station belonging to the centennial Bilbao-Plentzia railway, the station was rebuilt and made underground in 2017.[2]
History[]
The railway station of Urduliz first opened to the public in 1883 owned by the Company of the Railway from Las Arenas to Plentzia, which connected the seaside towns of Plentzia and Getxo, connecting with the Bilbao-Las Arenas railway in the latter. Direct services between Bilbao and Urduliz started in 1901.[3]
Starting in 1947, the narrow-gauge railway companies that operated within the Bilbao metropolitan area were merged to become Ferrocarriles y Transportes Suburbanos de Bilbao S.A. (Railways and Suburban Transports of Bilbao), shortened FTS and the first precedent of today's Metro Bilbao.[4] In 1977, the FTS network was transferred to the public company FEVE and in 1982 to the recently created Basque Railways. In the decade of 1990s, it was decided the station, just like the most of the former railway line, would be integrated into Metro Bilbao's line 1, with the new station opening to service now as part of the metro network on 11 November, 1995.
The station was closed down in 2015 with the objective of eliminating the line's last level crossing, which required the demolition of the station building due to its proximity and the construction of a new underground station. The new station was opened on 10 April, 2017.[2]
