Fairfax is a village in Hamilton County, Ohio, United States. It is a suburb of Cincinnati. The population was 1,699 at the 2010 census.[9]

History[]

Fairfax incorporated as a village in 1955. On January 1, 2010, it withdrew from Columbia Township by forming a paper township, due in part to city residents' low tax contribution compared to their influence on township elections.[1][2]

2010 census[]

At the 2010 census there were 1,699 people, 709 households, and 455 families living in the village. The population density was 2,235.5 inhabitants per square mile (863.1/km2). There were 778 housing units at an average density of 1,023.7 per square mile (395.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 94.8% White, 2.4% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.8% Asian, 0.1% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3%.[6]

Of the 709 households 34.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.9% were married couples living together, 16.8% had a female householder with no husband present, 5.5% had a male householder with no wife present, and 35.8% were non-families. 29.5% of households were one person and 9.8% were one person aged 65 or older. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 2.97.

The median age in the village was 37.7 years. 24.4% of residents were under the age of 18; 6.9% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 29.6% were from 25 to 44; 27.8% were from 45 to 64; and 11.4% were 65 or older. The gender makeup of the village was 46.5% male and 53.5% female.

2000 census[]

At the 2000 census there were 1,938 people, 771 households, and 531 families living in the village. The population density was 2,563.9 people per square mile (984.6/km2). There were 795 housing units at an average density of 1,051.8 per square mile (403.9/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 96.54% White, 1.08% African American, 0.15% Native American, 1.08% Asian, 0.05% from other races, and 1.08% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.21%.[8]

Of the 771 households 32.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.2% were married couples living together, 14.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.0% were non-families. 26.3% of households were one person and 11.3% were one person aged 65 or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.06.

The age distribution was 26.7% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 29.8% from 25 to 44, 21.1% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% 65 or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 88.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.5 males.

The median household income was $41,418 and the median family income was $47,778. Males had a median income of $37,250 versus $26,960 for females. The per capita income for the village was $19,699. About 2.6% of families and 5.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 7.2% of those under age 18 and 5.3% of those age 65 or over.

Fairfax feeds into the Mariemont City School District, which includes Mariemont High School.
