Angelo Troy Rivera (born April 18, 2001), known professionally as Gelo Rivera is a Filipino rapper, singer-songwriter and the leader[2] of the Filipino boy group BGYO.[3] Rivera has co-written several tracks released by BGYO: "The Light" (2021),[4] "Runnin'" (2021)[A][5] and "The Baddest" (2021).[6] As a BGYO member, he aims to inspire the young generation through their music.[7]

Prior to his music career, Rivera was a part of the Philippines Hip-hop dance crew named "A-Team", competing locally and internationally.[8]

Early life[]

Angelo Troy Rivera was born on the 18th of April 2001, in Pasay City, Philippines.[8] He grew up listening to Ne-Yo, Usher and Chris Brown.[9] Apart from his studies, Rivera's one and only passion on the side was dancing as he would go to dance trainings like hip-hop dancing and dance sport, eventually he became part of the "A-Team".[10] Initially, he thought that Star Hunt Academy was just a dancing gig but he accepted the opportunity upon learning the whole concept of the project and to expand his world from just dancing.[11]

Career[]

2018–Present: Star Hunt Academy and debut with BGYO[]

Rivera was about to fly to Arizona in the United States for the hip hop dance competition[12] when he received a call and scouted to audition in the Star Hunt Academy program by one of the SHA coaches in 2018 alongside with JL Toreliza,[13] eventually he became part of the "SHA Boys".[14] He and his four co-members were trained for two years under Filipino and South Korean mentors from MU Doctor Academy;[15] vocal coach Kitchy Molina; and dance coach Mickey Perz.[16] In an interview with Koukyouzen, Rivera shared that he actually discovered his rap skills inside the camp.[14] They were officially announced in the pre-show of PBB Otso Big Night as Star Hunt trainees on 3 August 2019[17] and debuted as a member of BGYO on 29 January 2021.[18]

Artistry[]

Rivera have cited BTS, Exo, GOT7, Wanna One, Seventeen, NCT, Twice, WayV, Stray Kids, TXT, Treasure, and Big Bang as musical inspirations.[19][14] In an interview with Myx Global,[20] Rivera have also cited Jabbawockeez as an influence.[21]

Impact and influence[]

Being the oldest member of BGYO, Rivera was addressed as the group's "Kuya" (big brother in English). Anna Fregillana of Parcinq magazine expressed in an article saying "I am a year older than him [Gelo], but he exudes the vibes of a Kuya I never really had".[2] Aside from his natural stage charisma, Rivera was also highly praised by his visuals, with Lionheartv.net calling Rivera as a "visual wonder".[3]

Personal life[]

Rivera believes in the saying, "There is beauty in chaos". His interest in music pinched into R&B but evolved until he discovered K-pop and idolizes Taeyong of NCT and Jungkook of BTS.[22] He aspired to do a collaboration with choreographers: Keone Madrid, Sienna Lalau, Paris Goebell and local artists: Jess Connelly, Jason Dhakal and Kiana Valenciano,[9] Gary Valenciano, KZ Tandingan and Zack Tabudlo.[2] Other than dancing as his favorite part of their training, he was also into theatre.[8] Drawing and doing artworks, cooking and sports—badminton and volleyball—were among of his hobbies and interests,[23] as evident when he became part of the Star Magic All-Star Games; for the badminton team.[24]
