Kanpur Airport (IATA: KNU, ICAO: VECX),[3][4][5] proposed to be renamed Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Airport,[3][6] is a domestic airport that serves the Kanpur metropolitan area. It has paved the way for easier connectivity to major tourist and historical attractions like Bithoor, Sankissa, Etawah Safari Park, Jhansi-Orchha, Kalinjar Fort, Kalpi, National Chambal Sanctuary, Bhitargaon and Kannauj which are in close proximity to Kanpur. It is the 5th most profitable airport in India in the year of 2020–21.[7]

Airport extension[]

Due to the limited expansion options available and restrictions enforced by the Airports Authority of India, the current terminal will not be able to cope with the huge demand for air traffic into Kanpur.[citation needed] An additional terminal of 6000 sq meters is under construction on Kanpur Prayagraj National Highway.

The new terminal will consist of six hangars and a waiting room for 300 passenger and four-lane connectivity from the highway. It will be completed by September 2021. It will be a 4-star GRIHA (Green Buildings Rating System India) rated energy efficient building equipped with eight check-in counters.[10]

Flights to Varanasi, Jaipur, Pune, Chandigarh, Amritsar, Goa, Bengalore and Chennai would cater to much traffic from Kanpur.
