Notes[]

  1. ^ Calculated, when available, from the latest national censuses or most recent official estimates (many of which are cited in their respective column), using the exponential formula shown in the list of countries by past and projected future population article. This is done to normalize the different populations to a unique date, so that they are really comparable.
  2. ^ It corresponds to the following formula: projection2015/projection2014x100-100.
  3. ^ It corresponds to the calculation: projection2015*annual_growth/100.
  4. ^ It corresponds to the formula: LN(2)/LN(growth/100+1), which produces exactly the same result as LOG10(2)/LOG10(growth/100+1).
  5. ^ Includes the disputed territory of Crimea, although it is not internationally recognized as a part of Russia.
  6. ^ It not only refers to the population of European or Metropolitan France, but it aso includes the overseas departments (in French, (Départements d'outre-mer, DOM), which are French Guiana (Guyane), Guadeloupe, Martinique, Mayotte, and Réunion. The overseas collectivities (Collectivités d'outre-mer COM), are also included: French Polynesia (Polynésie française), New Caledonia (Nouvelle-Calédonie), Saint Barthélemy, Saint Martin, Saint Pierre and Miquelon (Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon), and Wallis and Futuna (Wallis-et-Futuna).
  7. ^ Note from source: "Excluding the temporarily occupied territories of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city Sevastopol".
  8. ^ The island of Taiwan or the so-called Republic of China (ROC), which has been de facto independent from 1949 and is a partially recognized state, is claimed by the Communist People's Republic of China (PRC) to be one of its provinces.
  9. ^ Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China. A former British colony, Hong Kong reverted to Chinese sovereignty on July 1, 1997.
  10. ^ It comprises the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, separated between each other by an Israeli land corridor.
  11. ^ Disputed territory, claimed by Serbia.
  12. ^ Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China. A former portuguese colony, Macao reverted to Chinese sovereignty on December 20, 1999.
  13. ^ Claimed by Spain.
