The years of 2015 to 2019 saw the number of LGBTQ characters, building upon progress from 2010 to 2014, in animated series increase, changing the landscape when it came to representation. This includes Western animated series such as The Loud House, Danger & Eggs, Mysticons, OK K.O.! Let's Be Heroes, Castlevania, Big Mouth, She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, Twelve Forever, Craig of the Creek, Harley Quinn, and Hazbin Hotel. LGBTQ characters also appeared prominently in anime such as Flip Flappers, Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid, Bloom Into You, and Given.

This list only includes recurring characters, otherwise known as supporting characters, which appear frequently from time to time during the series' run, often playing major roles in more than one episode, and those in the main cast are listed below. LGBTQ characters which are guest stars or one-off characters are listed on the pages focusing exclusively on gay (in animation and anime), lesbian (in animation and anime), bisexual (in animation and anime), trans, pansexual, asexual, non-binary, and intersex characters.

Himouto! Umaru-chan July 23, 2015 Kirie Motoba Lesbian Kirie is a classmate who is introduced as a petite girl with frightening eyes that scare others and that watches Umaru intensely. She is portrayed as shy along with being in love with Umaru.[3][4] She considers Ebina a rival for Umaru's affections.
Mikagura School Suite April 6, 2015 Eruna Ichinomiya Eruna is the main character of the story. She is a somewhat dimwitted girl who has a romantic interest in girls and as a result spends much of her time playing dating simulation visual novels on her portable device.[5] She enrolls into Mikagura Private Academy after her cousin Shigure recommends it to her, largely due to wanting to be able to meet Seisa Mikagura whom she developed a strong interest in.
Show by Rock!! April 5, 2015 Retoree A Golden Retriever dog girl who has long blonde ears and a ribbon in her hair. She is the smart girl in the group and uses her smartphone anytime, making her shy and unsociable, even as she appears to have a crush on Cyan, the protagonist.[6][7]
Sound! Euphonium April 8, 2015 Reina Kousaka In this series, Reina and Kumiko love each other. While they never explicitly say they love each other, the conversations, looks, and touch between them indicates their romantic feelings for each other.[8]

Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid October 10, 2015 Charlotte Scharsen The series first antagonist. She has a harem of Extars (other girls) – called the Adel ("nobility") – that she uses all at once when fighting her opponents.[9] She strives to bring Mermaid under her thumb,[10][11][12] but is later seduced as a willing puppet Governor by Momoka.[13]
Kasumi Shigure Kasumi is the commander of Wärter who is opposed to Charlotte's despotic regime over Mermaid's residents.[9][14] She is in a relationship with Hibiki has been so traumatized by her experience at Mermaid that she refused to leave her room. She decided to join the fight at the very end with the purpose of not letting anyone else suffer the same way she did, apologizing to Kasumi for leaving her fight alone the whole time.

Mamori Tokonome Mamori and Mirei are in a romantic/sexual relationship.[15][14] Mirei states that she would have had no reason to live if she had not met Mamori. In one of the OVA shorts, it was revealed that Mirei used to be in a relationship with Momoka, the second antagonist.

October 17, 2015 Meifeng Sakura A crafty girl who speaks Kansai dialect and is often seen wearing a partial cowboy outfit. She often holds bets and scams in order to make money which she can use to activate her Extar ability in the form of a golden mech suit.[14] The use of her power consumes both the money and her clothes, leaving her in the nude when her power shuts off. She also seems to like observing Mamori and Mirei when they drive.
October 24, 2015 Rain Hasumi Rain and Lady J are passionate lovers.[16][14] Lady J is able to transform into a motorbike without her partner's aid. When both girls' Extar forms are combined, they turn into a powerful jet.

November 28, 2015 Momoka Sagara The series' second antagonist.[15] She harbored a deep hatred of Mirei for "abandoning" her,[17] as shown in the episode "Takeover", which turned her into a homicidal maniac, and has volunteered herself for further enhancement; they enable her to transform her chosen Extar into any weapon of her choice and absorb A Virus carriers to enhance her Arm's power.[18][14] It was revealed at the end of the series that she and Mirei were in a past relationship whilst they were Soldiers. In one of the OVA shorts, their relationship was confirmed to be sexual.
December 5, 2015 E9 E9 is one of the soldiers who have infiltrated Mermaid's Wärter.[19] In Episode 10, she sexually assaults other girls using a mysterious power to inspect their bodies.
Yurikuma Arashi January 5, 2015 Kureha Tsubaki The main protagonists of the series are presented as having various sexual encounters and romantic relationships as the growth of hatred towards bears grows within Kureha who lost her girlfriend, Sumika and her mother, Reia by the hands of them.[20][21] about why her mother and Sumika died.[22] As such, she accepts bears even more and becomes one herself, embarking on a romantic relationship with Ginko.[23]

2015–2016 Durarara!!×2 January 10, 2015 Mairu Orihara Bisexual The twins Mairu and Kururi,[24] the sisters of the series' antagonist Izaya Orihara, are openly bisexual characters, having crushes on male characters, while being opposites, but still work together.[25][26] They also appear in Durarara!!.[27]

In a radio broadcast, his voice actor, Murata Taishi, confirmed him as bisexual, having feelings for Yamagi and various women.[31]
2015–2018 Dragon Ball Super May 7, 2017 Kale Possibly Lesbian Kale is a Saiyan from Universe 6 and her feelings towards her best friend, Caulifla, are very ambiguous.[32] When Caulifla transforms into a Super Saiyan, Kale smiles and blushes. In the same episode, Kale gets jealous, thinking that Caulifla wants to be with Cabba more than with her and then attacks him.[33] Despite calling Caulifla 'sis', as is common among close Gang and Military members, she slips up and openly refers to Caulifla as her 'one and only' in the Tournament.
2015–2019 One-Punch Man November 22, 2015 Puri-Puri-Prisoner Gay Puri-Puri-Prisoner is a flamboyant, muscular gay hero who gets put in prison for taking an interest in and attacking other male heroes and criminals, thus the name.[34]
Star vs. the Forces of Evil January 18, 2015 Jackie-Lynn Thomas Bisexual Jackie-Lynn and Marco start dating in the episode "Bon Bon the Birthday Clown", but ended their relationship in the episode "Sophomore Slump" due to Marco's feelings for Star.[35][36] In the episode "Britta's Tacos", it is revealed that Jackie has a relationship with a French girl named Chloé. As such, it is clear that Jackie is bisexual.[37][38] United States
2015-2021 F Is for Family December 18, 2015 Ginny Throater Bisexual Ginny Throater is one of the Murphys' neighbors. She is clingy and was in denial about her husband's sexuality. After the divorce, she comes out as bisexual. Ginny leaves her sons to be with Frank's sister Eileen Murphy.[citation needed]
May 30, 2017 Greg Throater Sr. Gay Greg Throater was initially married to Ginny Throater and had two sons with her. However, it is clear that Greg is gay as he cheats on his wife with multiple men and wanted to get a divorce. His wife was in denial about it. In the season 2 episode "Pray Away", Greg comes out to her during a marital counseling session.[citation needed] The couple eventually divorced in season 3.
June 25, 2020 Eileen Murphy Lesbian Eileen is Frank's sister. She is revealed to be a lesbian in the fifth season and becomes Ginny Throater's lover.[citation needed]
November 25, 2021 Louis Chilson Gay Louis Chilson is Sue's brother. He was an unseen character who was mentioned in earlier seasons. Louis was previously disowned by his parents for being gay. He eventually appears in person and reconciles with his parents in the fifth and final season. Louis is voiced by openly gay actor Neil Patrick Harris.[39]

The Grand Prix Series Opening Event!! The Cup of China Free Skate", they kiss. In episode 10, "Gotta Supercharge it! Pre-Grand Prix Final Special!", Yūri buys them matching rings, which Viktor refers to as 'engagement rings'. Both characters' exact sexualities remain ambiguous throughout the series.

2016–present The Loud House May 2, 2016 Luna Loud Bisexual Luna shows attraction to Hugh, Lincoln's tutor, in "Study Muffin", and sends a love letter to a girl named Sam in "L is for Love".[63][64][65] Sam seems to feel similarly about Luna as shown in the latter episode. Sam Sharp appears to reciprocate Luna's feelings in that episode and others, with Lori describing them as beginning to date in the episode "Racing Hearts", though neither character calls their excursion a date throughout the episode. July 21, 2016 Dana Dufresne Trans woman She first appeared as the host (and judge) of a beauty pageant in "Toads and Tiaras" and reappeared in the episode "Gown and Out" in August 2018. Maddie Taylor, who does voice over for the character, revealed in August 2019 that the character had transitioned from a man to a trans woman, like herself, and said that the character would return in another episode within season 4.[71] However, Season 4 concluded on July 23, 2020, and no such episode or even appearance of Dana was shown.

Show creator, Shadi Petosky described the show as about a "gender-free female lesbian child and her giant large-gamete friend,"[74] referring to D.D. Milo Agender In the fifth episode, the two protagonists, DD Danger and Phillip, meet Milo, who uses they/them pronouns.[79][28] In the following episode, they form a band with DD and Philip named the Buck Buck Trio and play a music festival together.[80][76][77] Tyler Ford, an agender model and speaker is the voice of Milo, said they loved that their character, is an "accurate representation" of them.[76]
The Mayor Trans woman She is a mayor who supports the protagonists. While her gender identity is not directly mentioned, Insider confirmed she is a transgender woman.[28] She is voiced by transgender actress Angelica Ross.
Fate/Apocrypha July 9, 2017 Astolfo (Rider) Genderqueer Astolfo, while genetically and biologically male, likes to cross-dress, and has been described as androgynous.[81] He is willing to allow other characters to believe him to be either gender without objection, and has had relationships with women in the past, while also harbouring romantic feelings towards the series' male protagonist, Sieg, shown in the episode "Knight of Rebellion". In the main storyline, Midari has been portrayed as being sexually attracted to Kirari and Yumeko; in spin-offs, she has expressed sexual attraction towards Ririka (actually Mary in disguise) and various other female characters.

Made in Abyss July 7, 2017 Nanachi Ambiguous Nanachi is a Hollow with somewhat rabbit-like features. Although generally presumed to be female by others, Nanachi uses gender-neutral pronouns, and the writer has left Nanachi's gender intentionally ambiguous. The official English translator of Made in Abyss had also chosen to use gender neutral pronouns.[a] Given that the changes made to survivors of the curse are random, it's possible that Nanachi may not actually have a gender at all.

2017–2018 Freedom Fighters: The Ray December 8, 2017 Ray Terrill / The Ray Gay Ray, a gay superhero,[94] and John go to a bar where Ray fails to ask a man on a date.[95] As Ray struggles with his recent unemployment and avoids coming out to his conservative parents, the Ray from Earth-X[96] emerges through a breach and hands the cortex off to his Earth-1 counterpart, along with his powers, before succumbing to his injuries. Mysticons August 28, 2017 Zarya Moonwolf The show's creator, Sean Jara, confirmed the two as a couple, noting that only one version of the episode was created and that the show's creative team fought for a kiss, but lost even though they managed "to keep the integrity of the love story."[98][99] In later tweets, Jara said there is a "beautiful love story" between Zarya and Kitty in the show, referring to the interactions between the two characters in episode 37 ("The Princess and the Pirate"), stated the importance of showing "love between LGBTQ characters on TV", and said that the kiss was cut from the episode because of "systemic homophobia" in the kids television industry, crediting Rebecca Sugar for making strides.[99] He then opined on the continual battle for more LGBTQ representation, cited an Entertainment Weekly article about LGBTQ representation in cartoons,[b] praising those that fight for more representation behind the scenes. Lord Boxman Pansexual He has feelings for Professor Venomous, who was his loving partner in the past and is currently his partner.[101][103] Ian Jones-Quartey confirmed to a fan on Twitter that the character is pansexual[104] and confirmed that Professor Venomous and Lord Boxman were married at the end of the series.[105]
Enid Bisexual A bisexual secret witch and ninja[103] who is in love with Red Action.[66] In the episode, "We Messed Up", when Enid sees Mr. Gar has a picture of KO's mom when she was younger, she eagerly asks who the babe is, and when Enid and K.O. are biking to Rad's house in "Hope This Flies", Enid's helmet has a peace sign sticker colored like the bisexual pride flag. Enid also has possible romantic feelings toward Elodie.[106] Red Action and Enid shared a kiss at the end of the episode, "Red Action 3: Grudgement Day", in the show's final season. On October 13, 2020, Ian Jones-Quartey stated that Red Action and Enid "run a dojo together and kiss" after the end of the show.[107]
Gregg Non-binary Gregg is a minor character in the series, usually loitering around the plaza with Red Action and Drupe. Ian Jones-Quartey confirmed them as non-binary on Twitter.[108]
Radicles "Rad" Genderfluid In response to fans, Toby Jones implied that Rad's gender was fluid.[109]
Red Action Lesbian She is in a relationship with Enid, with their first date in the episode "Back in Red Action", becoming a more committed couple as the show progressed, even sharing a kiss in the episode "Red Action 3: Grudgement Day".[110] In a Reddit Q&A with Ian Jones-Quartey, a fan asked about a rumor that Kali Hawk's character, Red Action, was gay, and asked the same for Enid being bisexual. Entrapta first sees Hordak, head of the Horde, as her work partner, and reunites with him in the show's last season, with both walking off together in the show's final episode. Their relationship confirmed as canon by series creator ND Stevenson[227][d] and character designer Rae Geiger.[229][230] According to Stevenson, Entrapta "sees humanity in everything"[231] and had "lots of robot boyfriends and girlfriends", along with her relationship with the ship, Darla, in "some capacity".[227]
Light Hope Lesbian Light Hope is a magical entity composed entirely of light, the guardian of The Crystal Castle, and Etherian version of the Sorceress who acts as a mentor and advisor to She-Ra in her battle against Hordak and the Horde. Mara, on the other hand, was the last She-Ra before Adora, sent to Etheria with Light Hope to study the planet's magic, later learned that Light Hope had been reprogrammed by the First Ones to fire a massive weapon at the heart of the planet. December 13, 2019 Clayface Gay Clayface, a member of Harley Quinn's villain crew, was revealed to be gay, as shown in the second episode of season 2.[321] Clayface claimed to have met a student named Chad in Riddler University while disguised as a woman student Stephanie.[322] At the end of the episode, he gets a text from Chad, while made clear to have shown a loving affection from the sent message.
Hazbin Hotel October 28, 2019 Charlie Morningstar Bisexual Charlie is described as "gay" by news anchor Katie Killjoy, while she is shown as in an open relationship with Vaggie in the pilot episode.[323] Charlie was implied to be bisexual based on the colors of the bisexual pride flag appearing in a tweet from her account, describing Charlie and Vaggie's intimate relationship as to that of Jack Skeleton and Sally's relationship from The Nightmare Before Christmas.[324] Some reviewers say the show is filled with "queer characters".[325]
Vaggie Lesbian
Alastor Asexual Alastor, also known as the Radio Demon, is asexual.[326] He is also the first guest of the Happy Hotel,[327] which is renamed the Hazbin Hotel by the end of the pilot episode.
Angel Dust Gay Angel Dust, is a pornstar, the first patient at the Happy Hotel, and engages in advances toward Alastor.[328][327] Medrano confirmed him as gay and called him a "trashy unapologetically sexually open character."[329]
Tuca & Bertie May 3, 2019 Tuca Bisexual Tuca is a female anthropomorphic toucan who has shown interest in both men and women.[330] In the Season 2 premiere "Bird Mechanics", she is shown making out with a woman.[331] From the episode "Nighttime Friend" on, she tries to get into a serious relationship with a woman named Kara.[332] However they break up in the Season 2 finale "The Flood".[333]
July 4, 2021 Kara Lesbian Kara is Tuca's former love interest.[332] She is a female seagull who works as a night-shift nurse. Kara dumps Tuca in the season 2 finale "The Flood".[333]
Victor and Valentino March 30, 2019 Xochi Jalapeño Xochi is Don Jalapeño's rebellious teenage daughter who sometimes babysits the protagonists,[334] likes to go to concerts and attend salsa classes. In "Band for Life", it is revealed that she has a crush on her friend, Amabel as she blushes when Amabel flirts with her. In "Escaramuza", after Amabel gets injured, Val convinces Xochi to fill in for her as a way to impress her, and they plan to go on a date in "Carmelita" before it is interrupted by Victor and Valentino's antics.
