North State (also known as Nortti) is a Finnish brand of cigarettes which was manufactured by "Suomen Tupakka".[1][better source needed]

Today, the brand is owned and manufactured by multi-national company British American Tobacco.[2]

History[]

North State was founded in 1931 and is a cigarette which is equipped with a shorter filter compared to many other cigarette brands. The cigarette is mainly sold in Finland, but was also sold in Denmark, the Netherlands, East Germany, West Germany, Switzerland and the United States.[3][1][4][5] Jokingly, the brand is usually called "Chauffeur tobacco".

In Finland, the market had three different variants of North State: Red Filter, Filterless Green, and in 2014 North State White was added to the collection, which uses an all-organic type of tobacco.

North State Green is no longer sold because the tar content exceeded the 10 milligram legal limit imposed in the European Union.[6]

Besides traditional cigarette packs, tin cans containing the cigarettes were also sold.[7]
