Tōyō (東洋町, Tōyō-chō) is a town located in Aki District, Kōchi Prefecture, Japan. As of March 2017, the town has an estimated population of 2,598[1] and a density of 35 persons per km². The total area is 74.09 km².
, the former mayor of the town, brought national and worldwide attention when he applied to host Japan's high level nuclear waste repository in Tōyō. The plan was met with resistance from the town and he lost a subsequent election and resigned. He has expressed intention to run again.[2][3]
