The Amazing Race 22 is the twenty-second installment of the American reality television show The Amazing Race. It featured eleven teams of two, each with a pre-existing relationship, in a race around the world.

The season premiered on February 17, 2013, at 8:00 p.m. EST[a]/PST on CBS in the United States and CTV in Canada, with the two-hour season finale broadcast on May 5, 2013.[2][3]

Professional hockey players and brothers Jonathan "Bates" and Anthony Battaglia were the winners of this season.

Development and filming[]

Los Angeles's Griffith Observatory was the Starting Line for the 22nd Amazing Race.

This season was broadcast in the mid-season of the 2012–13 TV schedule. In an interview with TV Guide, Keoghan revealed that the Double Your Money prize introduced in the previous season would not be included in Season 22.[4] Instead, the twist this season was that the winners of the first leg were awarded two Express Passes: one for themselves and another that had to be given to another team before the end of Leg 4.[5]

The route spanned 30,000 miles (48,000 km) through ten countries in five different continents. This season was the first time The Amazing Race visited the overseas country of French Polynesia, where teams skydived above the island of Bora Bora. Other tasks and travel destinations included "Shemozzle racing" in New Zealand, hunting scorpions with bushmen in Botswana, and climbing the north face of the Eiger in Switzerland.[5] This season also featured a first time visit to the constituent country of Northern Ireland.

This season marked the first time that a team had been eliminated while still in possession of the Express Pass as well as the first time a team was subject to two separate U-Turns during the season.

Contestant Dave O'Leary tore his Achilles tendon near the end of Leg 2. Though he and his son, Connor, continued to race for another two legs with Dave being forced to use a medical boot, crutches, and a wheelchair while in airports, they elected to withdraw from the competition at the start of Leg 5 after Dave was advised by his physician to have surgery on his ankle within two weeks of the original injury. Though Dave and Connor traveled to Hanoi, Vietnam, with the remaining teams, they did not participate in any tasks in that leg. Instead, after arriving in Hanoi, they proceeded directly to the Pit Stop to be formally eliminated.[6] Dave returned to the United States in time to have the surgery to repair the tendon the day before filming of the season was completed and be at the Finish Line.[7] He was able to return to compete in The Amazing Race 24 a year later with his son Connor.

Previous editions of the program, as well as in the international counterparts, changed the route markers into solid yellow or yellow and white flags in order to avoid confusion with the flag of the former independent state of South Vietnam. In this season, the clue box directly after the U-Turn in Hanoi held the standard red and yellow flag. Subsequent seasons including Season 29 and Season 31 have also used the standard red and yellow flag.

During Leg 7, Max and Jennifer were both issued speeding tickets by the Botswana Police Service after going through a speed trap. Botswanan law requires that tickets be paid before the end of the day, so both teams stopped racing in order to pay the fines before moving on. Unlike previous seasons where racers have been penalized for receiving speeding tickets, the teams did not receive any additional penalties.

The final episode was dedicated to David Gene Gibbs, one of the camera crew, who died in a helicopter crash while filming a series for Discovery Channel.[8]

Teams for this season included two Stealing Angels vocalists, professional hockey players and brothers Jonathan "Bates" (an unrestricted free agent, formerly in the NHL and Swedish HockeyAllsvenskan) and Anthony Battaglia (of the CHL's Tulsa Oilers), and YouTube vloggers Joey Graceffa and Meghan Camarena.[5]

Chuck & Wynona were originally cast for the previous season, but pulled out due to Chuck's father's passing.[9]

Future appearances[]

Dave & Connor, Caroline & Jennifer, Jessica & John, and Joey & Meghan were selected to race in The Amazing Race: All-Stars, made up of returning teams from seasons 14–23.[10]

Prizes[]

The prize for each leg was awarded to the first place team for that leg. Trips were provided by Travelocity. The prizes were:

  • Leg 1 – Two Express Passes – an item that can be used to skip any one task of the team's choosing. The winning team keeps one for themselves but must relinquish the second to another team before the end of the fourth leg.

Leg 1 (United States → French Polynesia)[]

While in French Polynesia, teams visited Bora Bora, an island located in the South Pacific overlooking Mount Otemanu.

Airdate: February 17, 2013[12]

In this season's first Roadblock, one team member had to sign up for one of six helicopter flights, each of which had room for two racers. The racer then tandem skydived from over 10,000 feet (3,000 m) above the island while their partner made their way to the landing location in Anau via water taxi. Once team members reunited, they would be given their next clue.

In this leg's second Roadblock, the team member who did not perform the previous Roadblock had to search among 400 sandcastles for one with a clue buried beneath it. If the sandcastle didn't have a clue, racers had to rebuild it before they could continue searching.

Additional tasks
  • At the Griffith Observatory, teams had to pick up one of several Ford Fusions to drive to Los Angeles International Airport. A recorded message instructed them to travel to the island of Bora Bora in French Polynesia by booking one of two available flights on a connecting flight at Faa'a International Airport in Papeete with the first five teams on the first flight via Air Tahiti Nui that would arrive one hour before the remaining six teams on the second flight via Air France.
  • After the second Roadblock, teams had to assemble a va'a outrigger canoe and then paddle 1 mile (1.6 km) across the water to the Pit Stop at Motu Café.

Leg 2 (French Polynesia)[]

One of the two Detour choices in Bora Bora involved the Polynesian tradition of pearl farming (pictured from Rangiroa).

Airdate: February 24, 2013[13]

This season's first Detour was a choice between Pick a Pearl or Take a Trunk, both of which required racers to pick up a pair of water shoes and snorkeling gear. In Pick a Pearl, teams traveled to a point a half-mile offshore in the open water, where they had to dive and untie lines of pearl oysters. They had to shuck them open to find two red pearls and then swim to an oyster farmer to trade the red pearls for their next clue. In Take a Trunk, teams dove underwater, wearing special diving helmets, to look for a series of treasure trunks. They then had to take a trunk over to a submerged umbrella and unpack its contents, setting up an underwater picnic table to the waiter's approval to receive their next clue.

In this leg's Roadblock, one team member participated in a traditional Polynesian test of strength by walking on a pair of sparring stilts while kicking a coconut across a 35-yard (32 m) stretch of beach. If they fell, they had to return to the start to resume, but the position of the coconut was not reset. Once the racer successfully kicked the coconut over the finish line, teams could run to the nearby Pit Stop.

Additional tasks
  • At the start of the leg, teams had to board a water taxi that would take them to the Hilton Bora Bora Nui, where teams had to search for a wedding chapel to find a Polynesian priest who give them a blessing and their next clue.
  • After the Detour, teams chose a personal water craft and used a map to guide them to Motu Tapu, referred to as "the most photographed isle in the South Pacific", to find their next clue.

Leg 3 (French Polynesia → New Zealand)[]

The tasks on this leg focused on New Zealand well-known Southern Alps, escpecially the valley below Mount Hutt and its Rakaia River.

  • Boat: Tevairoa (Bora Bora Pearl Beach Resort & Spa) to Motu Mute (Bora Bora Airport)

This leg's Detour was a choice between Rev It Up or Reel It In. For both Detour tasks, teams had to use provided all-terrain vehicles to reach their respective Detour location. In Rev It Up, both team members had to drive a modified vintage car through a set of cones in under a combined 83-second time limit to receive their next clue from the race car driver "Flash". In Reel It In, each team member had to use a rod and reel to catch one fish that was at least 12 inches (30 cm) long to receive their next clue from champion fisherman Dirk.

In this leg's Roadblock, one team member had to run a muddy obstacle course known as a "Shemozzle". The racer had to dress in gum boots, stubbies shorts, and a burlap sack. Then, along with a shepherd and farm dog, they had to run through the course, where they were covered in molasses and feathers, climbed over hay bales, then finally rode an inner tube down a slide into a manure pond, all while collecting chicken eggs along the way which they had to put in a basket at the end of the course. Once they had 12 unbroken eggs in their basket, a shepherd would give them their next clue,

Additional task
  • After arriving in Christchurch, teams picked up a Ford Focus and drove to the Rakaia River Gorge. Once there, they picked a number for a jet boat with a departure time the next day and set up a camp for the night. At their designated times, teams had to choose a boat and navigate the river to find their next clue.

Leg 4 (New Zealand → Indonesia)[]

Teams ended the fourth leg on the edge of Pura Luhur Uluwatu cliff on the south coast of Bali with direct view to the Indian Ocean.

This leg's Detour was a choice between Sandy Bottom or Fruity Top. In Sandy Bottom, teams had to dredge volcanic sand from the bottom of the Ayung River and transport it 200 yards (180 m) uphill to a larger container. Once teams filled their container to a designated line, the brick maker would give them their next clue. In Fruity Top, teams had to dress in sarongs and prepare a Balinese religious offering known as gebogan from a variety of fruits. Then they would carry it in a procession to the Pura Desa Puseh Temple in Batuan to be blessed and placed it on an altar before receiving their next clue from a local priest.

In this leg's Roadblock, one team member had to go to Ketut's Surf Shop and search among several surfboards for one with an image from a previous leg: the Tahitian priest from the second leg in Bora Bora. After taking a surfboard, racers had to search for their partner and make their way to the Pit Stop to be checked by Phil. Once the racer brought the correct surfboard, teams would be allowed to check-in.

Additional task
  • At Ubud Monkey Forest, teams picked up a coconut to leave it for the monkeys to open, which contained their Detour clue inside a canister.

Leg 5 (Indonesia → Vietnam)[]

While in Hanoi, teams took part in a traditional Vietnamese bamboo dance known as múa sạp.

In this leg's Roadblock, one team member had to watch a performance of a Vietnamese patriotic song. After the performance, the performers would reveal the phrase "Vinh quang thay thế hệ thanh niên chúng ta" ("Glory to our young generation") to the racers, who would be given five minutes to search the nearby gallery without any notes for one of several political posters with the correct phrase hidden among many with misleading phrases to receive their next clue. If team members were unable to identify the poster within the allotted time, they had to watch the performance again.

This leg's Detour was a choice between Make Your Move or Make Your Meal. In Make Your Move, teams had to set up a human chess board at the Temple of Literature. Using a local cờ tướng board as a reference, teams had to find four human chess pieces that had symbols matching the pieces on the board, and then set them up with four staffs in position on the human chess board to receive their next clue from the chess master. In Make Your Meal, teams had to prepare Vietnam's national dish phở. Teams had to pick up four baskets (two empty and two with live chickens) at the Ngọc Sơn Temple, then they had to navigate at the street market to pick up the rest of the ingredients on a shopping list of specific weights or amounts. After acquiring the ingredients, teams had to find a cooking station to cook two phở soups to chef's approval to receive their next clue.

Additional task
  • At Công Viên Thống Nhất, teams had to correctly complete a traditional Vietnamese bamboo dance known as múa sạp to receive their next clue.

Leg 6 (Vietnam → Botswana)[]

While in Botswana, teams experienced the cultural practices of the Bushmen, including the traditional method of making fire and setting a trap.

In this leg's Roadblock, one team member had to follow Bushmen to a hole, where they were taught how to dig up a scorpion and place it carefully in a jar before they could retrieve their next clue.

This leg's Detour was a choice between Fire or Fowl. In Fire, teams traveled with their Bushmen to a nearby village, where they had to learn how to properly make fire using two sticks, zebra manure, and grass. Once they had a flame, they had to use it to light the elder Bushman's pipe to receive their next clue. In Fowl, teams had to learn how to set up a trap in order to catch a guineafowl, by utilizing a series of sticks, string, and eggs. After setting up the trap properly, teams had to mimic a guineafowl and get captured in the trap before receiving their next clue.

Additional tasks
  • At the Hair of the Dog Bar, teams had to find a dancer, who would give them their next clue. This task went unaired in the episode.
  • After learning that they would be traveling to Maun, teams had to figure out that the city is in Botswana and tell a security guard at a travel agency the country they would be traveling to before they could purchase their tickets.
  • Upon arrival in Maun, teams signed up for one of four charter flights to Xhumaga Airstrip in Makgadikgadi Pans National Park. There, teams would pick up their next clue from a jar.
  • After the Roadblock, teams had to take their group of Bushmen in their marked Ford Everest SUV to their next clue.
Additional note
  • Before the Roadblock, teams would choose a group of Kalahari Bushmen, who would accompany them throughout for the duration of the leg.

Leg 7 (Botswana)[]

The second Roadblock in Botswana had racers punting makoro canoes to navigate part of the Okavango Delta.

For their Speed Bump, Max & Katie had to complete a traditional beaded skirt and then wear it while performing a ceremonial seduction dance, before they could continue on to the Fast Forward or the Roadblock.

In this season's only Fast Forward, one team had to waterski for over a mile on the waters of the Okavango Delta, home to dangerous Nile crocodiles, to win the Fast Forward award.

In this leg's Roadblock, one team member had to transport two goats down river to a delivery point using a makoro, a traditional dugout canoe. The team member performing the Roadblock had to punt the makoro, while their partner would look after the goats. Once the goats were delivered and teams returned to the starting point, they received their next clue.

This leg's Detour was a choice between Brains or Brawn. In Brains, teams had to go on a horseback safari and spot ten wooden animal cutouts: (zebra, African buffalo, kudu, giraffe, meerkat, boomslang snake, leopard, warthog, ostrich, and a hippopotamus with a heron). They then traveled to a nearby campsite and arranged a set of tiles featuring the silhouettes of the animals in the order they appeared. There were tiles for animals they did not see, and none of the tiles representing the hippopotamus, but there was one for the heron. Once they arranged the tiles in the right order, they received their next clue; if not, they had to go back to the safari before being allowed another attempt to arrange the tiles. In Brawn, teams had to fill a traditional sand sledge filled with firewood then use a carrot dangling from a stick to coax a team of donkeys to pull the sledge over a 1⁄2-mile (0.80 km) to a campsite, where they had to unload the wood to receive their next clue.

Additional tasks
  • After the Roadblock, teams had to take a "safari taxi" along the Thamalakane River to the Royal Tree Lodge Game Preserve, where they would find their next clue.
  • After completing the Detour, teams had to search the game preserve for the Pit Stop.

Leg 8 (Botswana → Switzerland)[]

Sphinx Observatory at the top of Switzerland's Jungfraujoch, known as one of the highest observatories in the world, was visited by teams in this leg.

In this leg's Roadblock, one team member had to traverse the north face of the Eiger to pick up their "climbing buddy", the Travelocity Roaming Gnome, before traversing back to the railway station's observation deck to complete the task.

Additional tasks
  • At the Zürich Airport, teams had to search for a conductor in a red hat to find their next clue.
  • Once in Grindelwald, teams have to wait at Kirche Grindelwald for an Alpine shepherd with their next clue.
  • At Hotel Bellevue des Alpes at Kleine Scheidegg, teams had to pick up a "Swiss rescue companion", a St. Bernard dog. Teams then had to travel with the dog to Jungfraujoch and deliver the dog to a mountain rescue guide. Then they were allowed to search the Sphinx Observatory for their next clue.
  • At the Lütschine Brüggli Bridge, teams had to follow the sound of a Swiss alphorn to receive their next clue instructing them to participate in a Switchback from Season 14, where teams had to use traditional Grindelwald sleds to transport a total of four 50-pound (23 kg) wheels of cheese downhill to a barn to receive their next clue from the cheese meister.

Leg 9 (Switzerland → Germany)[]

After arriving in the German capital of Berlin, teams visited the famous Brandenburg Gate for a clue.

This leg's Detour was a choice between Train Trials or Font Follies. In Train Trials, teams drove themselves to the Deutsches Technikmuseum, where they had to build a model train track circuit using all of the pieces provided in such a way that the circuit fit on a platform. Once the train made one full lap of the circuit without falling apart, derailing, or hitting any pieces of scenery, the conductor would give teams their next clue. In Font Follies, teams had to travel to Wasserturm Park. There, teams picked up two large neon alphabet letters and had to transport them intact on foot to the Buchstabenmuseum to receive their next clue from the museum curator.

In this leg's Roadblock, one team member had to answer a question – "Who said Ich bin ein Berliner"? (John F. Kennedy) – and then enter a labyrinth located beneath the nightclub, where they had to search for a white room that had their next clue stuck on its walls.

  • At the Saxon State Ministry of Finance, teams picked up a Ford Fusion and had to answer three questions asked on the MyFord Touch system to reveal their next destination: (1) Who said "Tear down this wall!"? (Ronald Reagan); (2) Who did he say it to? (Mikhail Gorbachev); (3) Where did President Reagan say it? (the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin).
  • At Park Inn Berlin, both teams members had to BASE jump from the roof to receive their next clue from the jump master.

Leg 10 (Germany → Scotland)[]

After arriving in Edinburgh, the Roadblock had one team member playing Scotland's traditional musical instrument, the bagpipes, with marching pipers.

In this leg's Roadblock, one team member had to dress in a Royal Scots regiment uniform and learn to continuously play a drone on a set of bagpipes while marching with the Royal Scots pipers in Gosford House's Marble Room for two minutes to receive their next clue.

For their Speed Bump, Mona & Beth had to play a game of skittles, a traditional British form of ten-pin bowling, and score a "floorer" (a strike) before they could return to Craigmillar Castle to continue racing.

This leg's Detour was a choice between Tasty Puddin' or Whiskey Rollin'. In Tasty Puddin', teams traveled to the Sheep Heid Inn in Duddingston, where they had to prepare haggis by filling ox intestines with oatmeal internal organs in the presence of a Robert Burns impersonator who recited Burns' poem "Address to a Haggis". Once each team member prepared four portions of haggis, they were given their next clue after receiving a taste of the haggis. In Whiskey Rollin', teams had to roll eight barrels of Scotch whisky up a slope and deliver them to a party to receive their next clue from a Scottish country dancer.

Additional tasks
  • Upon arrival in Edinburgh, teams picked up a marked Ford Fiesta to drive themselves to Gosford House in Longniddry to find their next clue.
  • At Craigmillar Castle, teams had to search the castle's fireplaces for their next clue.

Leg 11 (Scotland → Northern Ireland)[]

One of the Detour choices in Northern Ireland paid tribute to the famous RMS Titanic, where teams had a task in Belfast's Titanic Quarter dry dock, the place it was built.

In this leg's Roadblock, one team member had to participate in bog snorkelling. After donning full snorkelling gear, including a complete wet suit and flippers, the racer had to cannonball into a muddy pool, then swim one 100-yard (91 m) lap in the bog within four minutes to receive their next clue.

This season's final Detour was a choice between Tray It or Spray It. In Tray It, teams had to go to the dry dock where the RMS Titanic was built to prepare and serve the ship's last five-course dinner to a group of first-class passengers. Using the menu provided, as well as a seating chart, teams had to choose the proper dishes for each course from a table full of unmarked plates and serve them to the passengers in the dining room at the drydock. When the waiter was satisfied that each passenger received the correct order for each course, the team was allowed to move on to the next course. Once all five courses were served correctly, a Captain Edward Smith impersonator would give teams their next clue. In Spray It, teams had to go to a skate park located in a warehouse, where they had to finish half of a graffiti painting using a photograph as reference to receive their next clue.

  • At the All-Route Shipping Warehouse, teams had to choose a Ford Fiesta and drive themselves to Peatlands Park to find their next clue.
  • After the Roadblock, teams had to find "The Thing With a Ring", leaving them to figure out it referred to the Beacon of Hope sculpture in Thanksgiving Square.

Leg 12 (Northern Ireland → England → United States)[]

Mount Vernon, the estate of the United States's first president, George Washington, was the site of the Finish Line for The Amazing Race 22.

This season's final Roadblock was a Switchback from the Family Edition. One team member had to take the briefcase and find one of fifty "spies" around the Tidal Basin who would respond to their given code phrase with another supplied code phrase (Max: "Where can I get a good half-smoke with chili?" / "I've heard there's a great place on U Street."; Bates: "I did not dress warm enough for this weather." / "Perhaps you would like to borrow my gloves."; Beth: "The cherry blossoms are beautiful here in April." / "I'll have to bring my mother next spring."). The team member then swapped briefcases with the spy, and the spy told them that the combination code to open their new briefcase was their final placement in New Zealand (Leg 3), Indonesia (Leg 4), and Vietnam (Leg 5). After they unlocked the briefcase, they could retrieve their next clue from inside.

Additional tasks
  • At the Euston Tap, teams had to order a pint of beer for each racer before they were given their next clue.
  • Once in Washington, D.C., teams had to find the location where Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his famous "I Have a Dream" speech, leaving them to figure out it was the on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. Teams would find the man standing on the spot on the steps where the speech was delivered with their next clue.
  • At 1100 Pennsylvania Avenue, teams were escorted by a "Secret Service agent" and were told they were to have their photograph taken with President Barack Obama. In reality, they were taken to a souvenir photography studio where they posed for a photograph in which their face was superimposed over a photograph of someone else meeting President Obama with their next clue printed on the back.
  • At the Tidal Basin, teams had to search for a marked car near the paddle boat docks. After knocking on the rear passenger side window three times, the occupant would give them a briefcase along with their next clue.
  • After the Roadblock, teams were instructed to travel to "The Home of the Nats", leaving teams to figure out that their next destination was Nationals Park. There, one team member had to ride a zip line across the stadium and toss a baseball, while their partner, dressed as a baseball mascot, attempted to catch it. Once they successfully caught the ball, they could read it to see it had "Hains Point" written on it, which was their next destination.[c]
  • At Hains Point, one team member had to enter a giant ball pit filled with globes marked with various countries and find ten globes marked with the countries they visited on the season, excluding England. They then had to pass the globes to their partner, who had to place the globes onto podiums in chronological order. Once complete, a giant globe would open revealing teams' final clue.
  • The final clue told teams to travel to "The Home of the First President" leaving them to figure out that the "First President" was George Washington and the Finish Line was at his home: Mount Vernon.

Critical response[]

The Amazing Race 22 receive mixed-to-negative reviews. Daniel Fienberg of HitFix wrote that "this wasn't an awful 'Amazing Race' season, but it was a season without a grand, building narrative."[24] Scott Von Doviak of The A.V. Club wrote that "it really isn't [amazing] and hasn't been for a long time. It's just coasting along on inertia at this point, and apparently Bertram van Munster and company don't feel the need to shake it up much at all."[25] Michael Hewitt of the Orange County Register was positive during the early part of the season but negative towards the end saying that the disappointing finish was "spoiling what had been a competitive revival for the show."[26] In 2016, this season was ranked 20th out of the first 27 seasons by the Rob Has a Podcast Amazing Race correspondents.[27]

Controversy[]

The Leg 5 episode in Hanoi sparked ire among some conservative media analysts and viewers for the tasks involving a performance of a communist propaganda song and the brief visit to a B-52 bomber that was shot down by North Vietnamese forces during the Vietnam War and turned into a memorial for communist Vietnam's victory. Complaints came in from sources such as the national commanders of the American Legion[28] and VFW,[29] the Media Research Center's Culture and Media Institute,[30] and liberal Democrat strategist and Fox News pundit Bob Beckel also spoke of their disgust at the program's choices.[31][32] Yahoo! later reported on comments from viewers found on Twitter whose complaints ranged from threatening to no longer watch the series or statements that the episode was "strange" or "disrespectful to Americans killed [in Vietnam]".[33]

Prior to the start of the episode for Leg 6, CBS aired an apology, noting that portions of the previous episode were insensitive to United States Armed Forces veterans. The message, read by host Phil Keoghan, stated:

"Parts of last Sunday's episode, filmed in Vietnam, were insensitive to a group that is very important to us – our nation's veterans. We want to apologize to veterans – particularly those who served in Vietnam – as well as to their families and any viewers who were offended by the broadcast. All of us here have the most profound respect for the men and women who fight for our country."[34][35]

Canadian ratings[]

Canadian broadcaster CTV also aired The Amazing Race on Sundays. Episodes aired at 8:00 p.m. Eastern and Central (9:00 p.m. Pacific, Mountain and Atlantic), with two exceptions. The broadcast of the second episode conflicted with CTV's broadcast of the 85th Academy Awards; The Amazing Race was shown instead at 8:00 p.m. in the Atlantic time zone, at 7:00 p.m. in the Eastern time zone, and at 6:00 p.m. in the Central time zone, and immediately after the broadcast of the Oscars in the Pacific and Mountain time zones. The broadcast of the ninth episode conflicted with CTV's broadcast of the 2013 Juno Awards; The Amazing Race was instead shown at 7:00 p.m. in each time zone across the country.
