The Amazing Race 11 (also known as The Amazing Race: All-Stars) is the 11th installment of the American reality television show The Amazing Race. The Amazing Race 11 featured eleven teams of two – ten returning teams from previous editions, and a dating couple who had met and competed against each other on a previous season – in a race around the world.

The eleventh season premiered on February 18, 2007 at 8:00 p.m. EST, 7:00 p.m. CST, for one hour,[1] and the season finale was on May 6, 2007.[2]

Dating couple Eric Sanchez and Danielle Turner, who had competed on opposing teams on The Amazing Race 9, were the winners of this season. They were the first team in the American version to win a season without relying on a Fast Forward or a Yield, and also the first winners to win only the final leg.[b]

Development and filming[]

The docks of the Charles Deering Historical Estate located outside of Miami was the Starting Line of The Amazing Race: All-Stars.

As early as 2004, there had been talk about an all-star edition, with speculation that it would occur during the eighth season, as with Survivor. These rumors were fueled by reports that season 4 winner Reichen Lehmkuhl had been invited to appear in a future all-star race.[3] Speculation continued for the next few years, particularly after CBS aired all-star editions of their two other reality competition series, Survivor and Big Brother.[4] On September 28, 2006, CBS ordered an 11th season of The Amazing Race.[5] in November 2006, the network officially acknowledged that an all-star edition was in production.[6] Host Phil Keoghan was originally skeptical that an all-star edition was feasible. Over time, Keoghan felt that "as we got more and more really good teams, it [All-Stars] just seemed like it had to happen."[7]

This season traveled a little over 45,000 miles (72,000 km), across 30 cities and six continents and was the second season (after Season 5) to visit every continent except Antarctica. The new locales visited in this season were Ecuador, Mozambique, Poland, Macau, and Guam. This was the last season in the American series to feature the Yield until The Amazing Race 32.[8] This is also the last season that did not either start or finish in the Greater Los Angeles Area until The Amazing Race 30. This season was the first since season 5 to feature the 13 legs and the final season to date to feature the concept, as subsequent seasons featured either 11 (for the next three seasons and on season 32) or 12 legs.

The 11 teams were selected from past contestants among the first ten seasons.[9] Keoghan personally submitted a list of 15 teams that he thought should return. Ten of them were chosen. The team he didn't choose was Eric & Danielle, who did not previously race together. Keoghan said, "I didn't think of that new combination, which actually is a really good one."[10] He also added that the production team's goal for the race "wasn't to pick the best racers", but "to pick the teams that have earned the most attention over the last 10 seasons".[7] Despite the "All-Stars" title, only one team, Uchenna & Joyce, had won a previous season. Some former racers were angered by their omission from All-Stars, most notably Chip and Kim McAllister (Season 5), and B. J. Averell and Tyler MacNiven (Season 9), who publicly criticized CBS' casting process.[11]

  • Colin Guinn and Christie Woods from Season 5 were expected to participate, but declined their participation due to the latter's pregnancy.[12] They would eventually participate on The Amazing Race 31.[13]
  • Flo Pesenti and Drew Riker (who began dating after meeting during Season 3) were invited to participate, but Flo reportedly declined for two reasons: she felt the first race had brought out the worst in her, and her Season 3 winning partner, Zach Behr, was not invited to join her.[14] The newly created team for All-Stars thus became Eric & Danielle.

No team from this season has competed on a subsequent returnee season.

Rob Mariano competed a third time on Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains, finishing in 13th place, and a fourth time to compete on Survivor: Redemption Island, which Rob went on to win. Rob & Amber later both returned to Survivor to compete on Survivor: Winners at War, where they finished in 17th and 20th place respectively.[15] Rob Mariano also returned for a non-participating season in Survivor: Island of the Idols alongside Sandra Diaz-Twine as mentors.[16] On May 23, 2016, Rob Mariano appeared on a Survivor-themed The Price is Right primetime special.[17]

Marketing[]

This season introduced the Elimination Station, featured on the official website. A series of 13 web episodes presented the eliminated contestants living together in a common house in their sequester location in Acapulco, Mexico. The series was viewable only in the United States and was available on the Innertube video streaming service on the CBS website, with a new episode debuting immediately following the airing of each new Amazing Race episode in the Pacific Time Zone.[18]

  1. ^ Kevin & Drew received a penalty for not taking the car they used during Leg 1 when they departed on the second leg. It is unknown how long the penalty was, or when it was served.[19]

Elimination Station[]

The first five teams eliminated were sequestered at a villa in Acapulco, Mexico to await the finale. Subsequently, eliminated teams telephoned the villa to inform those teams at the villa of their elimination, but continued to run as decoys to throw off spoilers to the final outcome of the season. The sequestered teams met with the decoy teams in the final destination city to cheer on the final three teams as they crossed the Finish Line.

CBS posted short videos on its website after each episode aired in the Pacific time zone to show the eliminated teams interacting at the villa.

  • After Leg 1, John Vito & Jill were the first eliminated and sent to the villa. While there, they were guessing who would be eliminated next. They thought it would either be Charla & Mirna or Kevin & Drew.
  • After Leg 2, Kevin & Drew were the second team eliminated and sent to the villa. While there, Kevin, Drew, and John Vito were arguing over what a stoop was. Later, they guessed Charla & Mirna would be eliminated next.
  • After Leg 3, David & Mary were the third team eliminated and sent to the villa. David recounted over breakfast how he was misdirected by several Chilean locals. Later, Jill shows David & Mary the master suite they saved for the first married couple. Later, Drew guessed Teri & Ian might be eliminated next.
  • After Leg 4, Rob & Amber became the fourth team eliminated and sent to the villa. Rob and Amber were welcomed very nicely; John Vito and Jill said they were a strong team. Later, they guessed that the next elimination would be Eric & Danielle.
  • Leg 5 was a non-elimination leg. The four eliminated teams sat around waiting for another team, only to hear John Vito and Kevin figure out that it must be a non-elimination leg. They spent time on a beach overlook; back at the villa, Rob dragged Mary into the pool.
  • After Leg 6, Teri & Ian were the fifth team eliminated and sent to the villa. Drew put on a displeased face for the camera when they arrived. A disgruntled Ian revealed that he believed Oswald & Danny are ruthless racers with no character, saying that when he worked with them in Ushuaia to book flights, they deliberately booked him a different flight and did not confirm it. He said that the same thing happened when Eric & Danielle worked with Oswald and Danny. He also predicted that either Dustin & Kandice or Uchenna & Joyce would win.
  • Leg 7 was a non-elimination leg. John Vito and Jill pondered about this non-elimination round. Ian expressed how he and Teri bonded with Joe & Bill and Eric & Danielle as a result of their spending consecutive days together in airports. Amber did tattoos for entertainment.
  • After Leg 8, Joe & Bill were the sixth team eliminated. The eliminated teams got a call from them and were sad to hear that Joe & Bill were eliminated. Mary asked Joe & Bill who they think should win. Bill said that he would love to see Uchenna & Joyce or Charla & Mirna win. The guests talked about the call the next morning. In a confessional, Kevin & Drew said that since they were so close to the Finish Line, they would see Joe & Bill where the season finished.[22]
  • After Leg 9, Uchenna & Joyce were the seventh team eliminated. They called the villa and told the eliminated teams about their flight problem that led to their elimination. The teams at the villa expressed disappointment at Uchenna & Joyce's elimination, and Amber tells them they would meet up at the Finish Line. Prior to the call, Drew questioned why Dustin & Kandice need to participate in The Amazing Race when they had already won beauty pageants. Amber took exception to this, having won Survivor: All-Stars prior to her original season of The Amazing Race.
  • Leg 10 was a non-elimination leg. The eliminated teams waited for another team, only to discover that the leg was non-elimination. Amber taught Mary how to swim, allowing her to overcome her long-held fear of swimming.
  • Leg 11 was a non-elimination leg. The eliminated teams waited for a phone call from the next eliminated team, but give up after several days. John Vito came up with the idea of throwing an awards party to commemorate the end of their stay at the villa. Each racer drew another racer's name and presented him or her with funny and sometimes touching gifts.
  • After Leg 12, Oswald & Danny were the eighth and final team eliminated. The five teams at the villa departed for the "end city" in order to cheer the remaining teams at the finish line. They reunited with Joe & Bill, Uchenna & Joyce, and newly eliminated Oswald & Danny. Oswald and Danny said they would like to see Charla & Mirna win the competition, while some of the other teams reiterated who they would like to see win.
  • Leg 13 was the final leg of The Amazing Race: All-Stars. Some of the eliminated teams shared their opinions on the winners and the runners-up. The final three admitted to their joys and disappointments.

Leg 1 (United States → Ecuador)[]

The Cotopaxi volcano in Ecuador was the locale of the Detour and the Pit Stop of the first leg.

This season's first Detour was a choice between Wrangle It or Recover It. In Wrangle It, teams had to help local cowboys lasso, tie down, and groom one wild horse, whose hooves had grown too long to walk properly. Team members had to use traditional tools to clip its hooves to a safe length and to trim its mane and tail. When the horse was released, teams would receive their next clue. In Recover It, one team member had to put on an historical military uniform. Then, teams had to search a field for three items missing from the uniform, an epaulette, a button, and a sword, to receive their next clue from a general.

Additional tasks
  • From Charles Deering Historic Estate, teams had to drive a marked Mercedes-Benz vehicle to drive to Miami International Airport to book one of two flights to the first destination Quito, Ecuador. Six teams would be on an Copa Airlines flight which departed first but would arrive two hours after an American Airlines flight which departed second and carried the other five teams.
  • At Pim's Restaurant, teams had to pull a number for one of three different departure times for the next morning: 7:00 a.m., 7:15 a.m., and 7:30 a.m. At the designated times, teams were provided a map and had to find a marked Chevrolet Tracker in a nearby parking garage to drive themselves to Hacienda Yanahurco at Cotopaxi National Park, advised to enter at the park's northern entrance, to find their next clue.

Leg 2 (Ecuador → Chile)[]

The Detour in Chile took place at Chuquicamata copper mine. One task involved a dump truck similar to the one pictured.

  • Flight: Quito (Mariscal Sucre International Airport) to Santiago, Chile (Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport)

  • Calama (Chuquicamata) Detour: By Hand or By Machine
  • San Pedro de Atacama (Valley of the Dead) Pit Stop: Leg 2

In this season's first Roadblock, one team member had to enter the ground floor of the corporate headquarters of Codelco and search the boardroom for letters of the alphabet. Racers had to figure out that the majority of the letters, when unscrambled, would spell one of the ten destinations inscribed on the plaques hanging on the wall. When they believed they had the solution, which was "Chuquicamata", they had to show their answer to the security guard. If they were correct, he would hand them their next clue.

This leg's Detour was a choice between By Hand or By Machine. In By Hand, teams had to choose a two-ton tire and finish securing it to a dump truck by screwing in properly aligned bolts and washers to receive their next clue from a foreman. In By Machine, each team member had to take a turn driving a huge front loader to transfer enough gravel to cover a marked yellow line on a stick and receive their next clue from a foreman.

Additional task
  • After the Detour, teams had to drive themselves in a marked Nissan Terrano to the Pit Stop at the Valley of the Dead in San Pedro de Atacama. Teams had to heed a speed limit of 40 kilometres per hour (25 mph) while driving through Valle de la Luna on their way to the Pit Stop and could increase their speed to 50 kilometres per hour (31 mph) after leaving the valley.

Leg 3 (Chile)[]

The Petrohué River in Chile's Los Lagos Region was the site of this leg's Detour.

Airdate: March 4, 2007

In this leg's Roadblock, one team member had to choose an 1,800-US-gallon (6,800 l; 1,500 imp gal) fish-breeding tank, jump in, and catch and transfer all 80 flounder from the breeding tank to a holding tank at the other end of the farm. Once finished, their clue would be revealed at the bottom of the tank.

This leg's Detour was a choice between Vertical Limit or River Wild. In Vertical Limit, teams had to walk 200 yards (183 m) to a cliff where both team members needed to complete a 40-foot (12 m) rock climb. Each team member would grab half of their clue at the top. In River Wild, teams had to backtrack two miles (3.2 km) to the banks of Rio Petrohué, where they would complete a two-and-a-half mile (4 km) whitewater-rafting course, through level 3 and 4 rapids. After completing the course, teams would find their next clue.

Additional task
  • Upon arrival in Puerto Montt, teams had to choose a marked Toyota Yaris to drive themselves to Centro Acuicultura y Ciencias del Mar in the town of Metri to find their next clue.

Leg 4 (Chile → Argentina)[]

Ushuaia, Argentina, one of the southernmost cities in the world, was visited by teams on this leg.

Airdate: March 11, 2007

This leg's Detour was a choice between Navigate It or Sign It. In Navigate It, teams had to use a map of Punta Arenas to find the Plaza Muñoz Gamero, where a sailor would hand them a compass. Then, using the compass, the teams needed to walk directly south to the Nautilus building, a deep-sea salvage business, where the proprietor would give their next clue. In Sign It, teams had to choose a pole and building supplies and carry them up a flight of stairs to Ferdinand Magellan's map. Using this map as a reference, teams needed to determine his expedition's circumnavigation of the world began and ended in Seville. They then had to build a traditional local signpost listing in order the fourteen ports-of-call on his voyage. While the signs didn't have to point in the right direction, all the cities had to be spelled correctly. When they completed the signpost, they would receive their next clue.

In this leg's Roadblock, one team member was to search through 1,600 pieces of mail from a mailbag to find one of two letters addressed to their team (written by one of the other teams from their season). The team member then had to read the message inside the letter to their partner, after which they received their next clue.

Additional tasks
  • Upon arrival in Punta Arenas, teams had to find the Lord Lonsdale shipwreck and locate the clue nearby.
  • At Carlos Ibanez Del Campo International Airport, teams had to sign-up for one of two charter flights to Ushuaia, Argentina, known as one of the southernmost cities in the world, which departed at 8:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. the following morning.
  • At Bahia Lapataia, teams had to take a number for a place on a boat to Isla Redonda. Boats departed every 20 minutes and would take a maximum of two teams.

Leg 5 (Argentina → Mozambique)[]

The Fortaleza de Maputo was the Pit Stop in Mozambique.

Airdate: March 18, 2007

In this leg's Roadblock, one team member had to guide a rat to find an Amazing Race flag above a deactivated landmine. Once their rat gave the signal that it found something, an Apopo mine technician would search the area, and if they dug up the flag, the team would receive their next clue.

This leg's Detour was a choice between Pamper or Porter. In Pamper, teams had to travel a half-mile (800 m) to the Maputo Central Market, choose a nail-polish kit, and convince people to pay them to paint their nails, which in Maputo is a job usually performed by men, until they earned at least 30MT (about US$1) to receive their next clue. In Porter, teams made their way two miles (3.2 km) to Mercado Janet, where they would use their bare hands to fill ten 45-pound (20 kg) bags with coal and sew them shut. Then, teams had to carry one of the bags to a specified address, where the owner would hand them their next clue.

Additional task
  • At Martial Glacier, teams had to ride a chair lift, pick up equipment, and hike a half-mile (800 m) to a glacier, where teams had to use an avalanche beacon to search for another beacon buried in the snow with their next clue.
Additional note
  • Teams were provided tickets on a flight to Maputo set to arrive at 3:00 p.m. but were under no obligation to use them. However, if teams wanted to book an earlier flight, then they would have to purchase the tickets at a travel agent as travelers can't book international flights from the Ushuaia airport.

Leg 6 (Mozambique → Tanzania)[]

Teams ended the leg in Zanzibar at the famous Old Fort in Stone Town.

This leg's Detour was a choice between Solve It or Schlep It. In Solve It, teams had to make their way one-third of a mile (500 m) to the Beyt al Chai hotel, where they had to assemble a 62-piece puzzle of an image from the tinga tinga style of local artwork to receive their next clue. In Schlep It, teams made their way one-mile (1.6 km) to the Kijangwani Lumber Yard. Once there, teams had to choose a local handcart, load two 50-pound (23 kg) logs, then deliver them more than a mile (1.6 km) to a dhow shipyard to receive their next clue.

In this leg's Roadblock, one team member had to throw a traditional Maasai wooden weapon called a rungu 65 feet (20 m) at a clay target to shatter the target and reveal their next clue hidden inside.

Additional task
  • At the Dar es Salaam ferry terminal, teams had to draw a number for one of four dhows that would take them to Zanzibar, where they would search for a nearby kiosk with their next clue after disembarking.

Leg 7 (Tanzania → Poland)[]

Teams finished this leg in Warsaw's Łazienki Palace, overlooking its reflection pool.

Airdate: April 1, 2007

This leg's Detour was a choice between Perfect Pitch or Perfect Angle. In Perfect Pitch, which commemorated Frédéric Chopin, teams had to make their way three-quarters of a mile (1 km) to the Prymas Palace and choose a grand piano. Then, they had to use the provided tools to tune one key of the keyboard. Once the concert pianist played a piece of Chopin's music and determined that their piano was in tune, he would hand teams their next clue. In Perfect Angle, which commemorated Marie Curie, teams made their way approximately half-a-mile (800 m) to the Escada Boutique, obtained a mannequin, and carried it another 400 yards (400 m) to the Panoramik Laboratory. Once there, teams had to use an x-ray machine to locate a clue embedded inside their mannequin, which needed to be positioned at a very specific angle for the image to show the name of their next destination.

An unaired Roadblock involved team members having to row a boat out onto the reflecting pool from the park to the palace (further details are unknown).

Additional tasks
  • At Czapski Palace, teams had to find a Frédéric Chopin impersonator who would give their next clue.
  • After completing either Detour, teams received the worksheet or x-ray paper, from which they had to determine their next location was the statue of Jan III Sobieski at Łazienki Park.
Additional note
  • Due to limited availability of flights from Zanzibar to Warsaw, teams were provided tickets for a flight with an arrival time of 11:25 a.m. the next day but were under no obligation to use them.

Leg 8 (Poland)[]

In Poland, teams visited the Auschwitz concentration camp and paid tribute to the millions killed during the Holocaust.

Airdate: April 1, 2007

In this season's first Fast Forward, one pair of newly joined teams had to climb the stairs of the fire guard tower of St. Mary's Basilica and the Town Hall Tower located in the Main Market Square. They had to count how many stairs there were, add these numbers together, and present the total number to a guard atop the fire guard tower. If they had the correct answer (348), both teams would win the Fast Forward award.

This leg's Detour for the newly-joined teams was a choice between Eat It Up or Roll It Out. In Eat It Up, the Intersected teams had to make their way one-and-a-half miles (2.4 km) to an old market. Once there, each team member had to use traditional methods to make a three-inch (7.6 cm) length of Polish kiełbasa sausage. The teams would then be served 8 feet (2.4 m) of cooked kiełbasa. Once each person ate 2 feet (0.61 m) of sausage, the teams would receive their next clue. In Roll It Out, the Intersected teams had to make their way one-and-a-half miles (2.4 km) to the J. Mazurek bakery in the city's Kazimierz, the Old Jewish Quarter, and properly roll out twenty bagels. When finished, they would carry a delivery of fresh bagels one-quarter mile (400 m) to Klezmer Hois, and receive their next clue. Once teams completed the Detour, they were no longer Intersected.

In this leg's Roadblock, one team member had to don a full suit of authentic medieval armor, then lead a horse a half-mile (800 m) through the forest to the castle gates. Once at the castle, they had to deliver the horse to the stable boy, enter the courtyard, and search for the Pit Stop.

Additional tasks
  • At the monument of the Polish Underground State and the Home Army, teams had to pick up tickets for one of two charter buses to their next destination.
  • At Auschwitz-Birkenau, teams had to light a memorial candle on the railroad tracks to honor those who lost their lives during the Holocaust. Once they observed the memorial silence, they would receive their next clue.
  • At Juliusz Słowacki Theatre, teams encountered an Intersection that required two teams to agree to work together until further notice.
  • After completing the Detour, teams had to find marked Opel cars in a nearby parking a lot and drive themselves to Sułoszowa.

Leg 9 (Poland → Malaysia)[]

Once in Malaysia, teams had to climb up several steps on the stairs of the famous Batu Caves for their clue.

This leg's Detour was a choice between Artistic Expression or Cookie Confection. In Artistic Expression, teams had to travel one-third of a mile (500 m) on foot to Dewan Lama, where they had to use a traditional technique known as batik to exactly duplicate one of three patterns onto a 45-square-foot (4 m2) piece of cloth. Then they had to dye the cloth to the satisfaction of the artisan to receive their next clue. In Cookie Confection, teams had to travel on foot a half-mile (800 m) to Chow Kit Bomba, locate a marked stall, and search through 600 boxes of traditional Malaysian festive cookies by biting into the cookies until they found one with a black licorice center to receive their next clue from the cookie vendor.

In this leg's Roadblock, one team member had to become involved in Malaysia's eco-friendly practice of paper recycling. Team members had to choose a bicycle with an attached side cart, then scour the neighborhood for residents willing to give them their used newspapers. Once they had collected enough newspaper to make a stack approximately six feet (1.8 m) high, they would receive their next clue.

Additional tasks
  • At Batu Caves, teams had to climb the steps and search for their next clue.
  • At Kampung Baru district, teams had to find the Kampung Baru Mosque and search the footbridge for their next clue, where they encountered a Yield.
  • At the neighborhood of Taman Sri Hartamas, teams had to search for a newspaper vendor with a delivery truck to find their next clue.

Leg 10 (Malaysia → Hong Kong)[]

The Happy Valley Racecourse at the Hong Kong Jockey Club was the Pit Stop for this leg.

In this season's second Fast Forward, one team had to travel 5 miles (8 km) to a film set located at the former Kai Tak Airport, where a high-speed stunt was being filmed for an action movie. They had to get in a car with a stunt driver and complete a stunt course, which involved sharp turns and the car flipping-over. After completing the stunt course, the team would win the Fast Forward award.

This leg's Detour was a choice between Kung Fu Fighting or Lost in Translation. In Kung Fu Fighting, teams had to travel 5 miles (8 km) to Tonkin Street and find the former Cheung Sha Wan Police Quarters. Once there, they had to climb an 11-story bamboo scaffold, while avoiding a mock battle between kung fu stuntmen, to reach the top and retrieve their next clue. In Lost in Translation, teams needed to make their way 4 miles (6.4 km) to Kowloon City and find Nga Tsin Wai Road. Once there, they had to search among hundreds of similar-looking Chinese characters store signs for the specific one "滿玉時裝晚裝" shown in the clue. When they found the matching store, the owner would hand them their next clue.

In this leg's Roadblock, one team member had to kick down doors in the old building of the former Kennedy Town Police Headquarters and search for their next clue.

Additional tasks
  • At Sun Wah Kiu Dry Cleaning & Laundry, teams received their next clue from the launderer.
  • At Victoria Park, teams had to proceed to Model Boat Pool to find a model boat and a Travelocity Roaming Gnome. They then had to balance the gnome on the boat, and pull the model boat from one end of a pond to the other to retrieve the gnome and their next clue from inside the model boat. If the gnome fell into the water, they had to start over.

Leg 11 (Hong Kong → Macau)[]

The Macau Tower was the site of the Roadblock of this leg.

In this leg's Roadblock, one team member had to walk around the outer rim of the Macau Tower observation deck and then perform the world's tallest (at the time) SkyJump by falling 660 feet (200 m) to the ground in a controlled descent to receive their next clue.

This leg's Detour was a choice between Noodle or Dragon. In Noodle, teams had travel to the factory of Fábrica de Sopa de Fita Weng Kei inside Edificio Fabril Veng Kin, choose a noodle making station, and use traditional methods to flatten and cut dough into two acceptable bundles of Chinese noodles to receive their next clue. In Dragon, teams had to travel to a warehouse, obtain a dragon head and drum, and carry them three-quarters of a mile (1.2 km) to the harbor at Nam Van Lake. There, they had to attach the dragon head to a matching dragon boat and deliver the drum to the boat's master to receive their next clue.

Additional tasks
  • After arriving on the Macau Peninsula by TurboJET, teams had to find a man on a rickshaw outside the Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal, who would give them their next clue. Teams then had to "travel by taxi to the tallest structure in Macau", the Macau Tower, where they would find a Yield and their next clue.
  • At Rua de Silva Mendes, teams had to find a marked Mini Moke parked opposite Instalações do Departamento de Trânsito and drive themselves to the Pit Stop on Taipa Island.

Leg 12 (Macau → Guam)[]

B-52 bombers were featured in one side of the Detour in Guam.

This leg's U.S. Air Force-inspired Detour was a choice between Care Package or Engine Care. In Care Package, teams made their way to a warehouse, chose a loading station, and filled 500-pound (230 kg) packages with various humanitarian aid items for a neighboring island. Once complete, teams would then board a C-17 Globemaster and participate in an airdrop training exercise, which would take at least a half-hour. When they landed, the load master would hand teams their next clue. In Engine Care, teams had to clean an engine pod on a B-52 bomber and scour the associated flap section on the wing to the satisfaction of a senior Air Force maintenance officer to receive their next clue.

In this leg's Roadblock, one team member had to perform a search and rescue mission. Using a handheld GPS receiver, they had to navigate through the jungle. Team members had to find one of four training officers, who provided co-ordinates directing them to the landing zone. Then they used a radio and smoke grenade to signal a rescue helicopter to pick them up. The helicopter brought them back to their partner, where they received their next clue.

Additional tasks
  • After landing in Guam, teams had to choose a marked Toyota Sienna van and drive themselves to Andersen Air Force Base. Once on the base, due to security concerns, they would choose a military escort to drive them to the air base's control tower, which they had to climb to the top to find their next clue.
  • At the U.S. Naval Base on Orote Peninsula, a naval escort drove teams to a specified location with their next clue.

Leg 13 (Guam → United States)[]

In the final destination city of San Francisco, teams visited the historic San Francisco Mint for the final task.

This season's final Detour was a choice between Under or Over. In Under, teams had to swim into an underwater cave and retrieve a clue anchored to the cave's floor. In Over, teams had to use a paddle board, and paddle together to reach a buoy that had their next clue.

After the Detour, teams had to travel by boat to a sea cliff where one team member had to complete this season's final Roadblock of jumping off of a 30-foot (9.1 m) cliff to receive their next clue. This task went unaired in the episode.[24][e]

Additional tasks
  • Upon arrival in Honolulu, teams had to proceed to Kamaka Air Hangar, where they had to sign-up for one of three helicopters that would take them to Lanai 10 minutes apart. Once they landed, they must choose a marked jeep with their next clue instructing teams to drive themselves to Kaumalapau Harbor to receive their next clue from a kahuna.
  • At Shipwreck Beach, teams had to trek one-mile (1.6 km) along the shore to find a clue. This instructed them to use a kayak to paddle to a buoy with their next clue near a World War II shipwreck.
  • At San Francisco's Old Mint, one team member had to enter a vault and answer four questions relating to their opinion of other teams on the season:
  • Who is the least trustworthy?
  • Who has the best sense of humor?
  • Who is the most overrated?
  • Who do you most want to stay in touch with?
Their answers would create a four-digit code which locked a safe containing their final clue. The other team member then had 10 minutes to guess his or her teammate's answers, entering the same code to unlock the safe. If they guessed correctly, the safe would open and they could retrieve their final clue. If the 10 minutes expired without a correct guess, a guard would hand them their final clue.

Critical response[]

The Amazing Race 11 received mixed reviews. Linda Holmes of Television Without Pity was critical of this season's cast writing that "there weren't that many teams that didn't halfway suck to begin with, and we still had about a 75 percent chance of a better ending than this. We're all cursed."[25] Simon Brew of Den of Geek wrote that "the procession of camera hoggers in this season ultimately, come the final round, left the audience with a real problem: there was nobody to root for."[26] Roger Holland of PopMatters wrote that "TAR-11 started poorly, stuttered and staggered around the globe like the zombified remains of its former self, and finished on an absolute all-time low."[27] Heather Havrilesky of Salon wrote "this season's challenges were some of the most frustrating and difficult ever".[28] In 2016, this season was ranked 8th out of the first 27 seasons by the Rob Has a Podcast Amazing Race correspondents.[29]
