List of episodes

The Amazing Race 25 is the twenty-fifth installment of the American reality television show The Amazing Race. It featured eleven teams of two in a race around the world for a US$1 million grand prize.

The season premiered on September 26, 2014 on CBS for the 2014–15 television season, moving to Friday at 8:00 pm, with the season finale on December 19, 2014.

Food scientists Amy DeJong and Maya Warren were the winners of this season. They became the third all-female team to win in the American series.[5]

Production[]

Development and filming[]

The 25th season of The Amazing Race started filming on May 31, 2014, at the red bleachers of Duffy Square at Times Square in New York City.

Filming began in the early morning of May 31, 2014 at Times Square in New York City. In contrast to the starts of previous races, which were typically held in private or restricted-access locations to prevent potential spoilers, CBS invited fans to appear at the Starting Line and see the teams off.[3] The publicity of the Times Square start led CBS to announce the identities of the competing teams the same day.[6] It was revealed at the public start that instead of the Express Pass, teams would be awarded a new immunity from elimination pass called "The Save" for coming first in the first leg. This could be used by that team if they came in last place on an elimination leg before Leg 9. The Save was presented once in a non-elimination leg so it was never used.[7]

This season spanned 26,000 miles (42,000 km) through eight countries, including first time visits to the United States Virgin Islands, Malta, and the Shetland Islands of Scotland.[8]

At various points throughout the filming of the season (generally once an episode), teams encountered host Phil Keoghan on the course where he explained a task to the home audience while the competition continued behind him. This new tradition has thus far continued in each season that has succeeded this one until The Amazing Race 29.

Palermo mayor Leoluca Orlando appeared as the Pit Stop greeter in Leg 8 outside the mayoral headquarters of Villa Niscemi. Melody Chen from The Amazing Race Asia 1 was the Pit Stop greeter in Leg 9.[9]

For the first time in Amazing Race history, four teams competed in the season's final leg. However, Phil eliminated one team in the middle of the final leg, leaving only three teams racing to the Finish Line for the $1 million grand prize.

This was the very first season in which all eleven teams finished legs in last place at one time or another.

Casting[]

The cast included married professional surfers Bethany Hamilton—a shark attack survivor whose story was told in her memoirs and the film Soul Surfer—and Adam Dirks, former Survivor: South Pacific contestants and engaged couple Whitney Duncan and Keith Tollefson, and TNA Wrestling stars Brooke Adams and Robbie Strauss.[6]

Contestant Jim Raman died on March 11, 2019 at the age of 42.[10]

Future appearances[]

No team from this season has competed on a subsequent returnee season.

In 2017, Brooke Adams appeared on the second season of the TLC reality show Rattled.[11] In 2019, Robbie Strauss competed on the second episode of The Titan Games.[12]

Key
  • A red team placement means the team was eliminated.
  • An underlined blue team's placement indicates that the team came in last on a non-elimination leg and had to perform a Speed Bump during the next leg.
  • A brown ⊃ or a cyan ⋑ indicates that the team chose to use one of the two U-Turns in a Double U-Turn; or indicates the team who received it;
indicates that the team was U-Turned, but they used the second U-Turn on another team; ⋐⋑ around a leg number indicates that only one of the two available U-Turns was used.
  • A purple ε indicates that the team decided to use the Express Pass on that leg.
  • A green ƒ indicates that the team won a Fast Forward.
  • An underlined leg number indicates that there was no mandatory rest period at the Pit Stop and all teams were ordered to continue racing. An underlined team placement indicates that the team came in last, was ordered to continue racing, and didn't have to perform a Speed Bump in the next leg. Teams were warned that at some point in the next leg, a team would be eliminated.
Notes
  1. ^a b c Keith, Scott, and Lisa elected to quit the Roadblock. Keith & Whitney and Michael & Scott were issued 4-hour penalties for their forfeits that were applied at the start of the next leg. As Lisa & Michelle were the last team to arrive with the same penalty, they were eliminated.
  2. ^ In an unaired segment shown on the CBS website but not on the episode, Keith & Whitney used their U-Turn on Amy & Maya; however, Amy & Maya had already passed the U-Turn point and were therefore unaffected by it.
  3. ^ Adam & Bethany used the Express Pass to bypass the Detour on Leg 8.
  4. ^ Amy & Maya used their U-Turn on Adam & Bethany; however, Adam & Bethany had won the Fast Forward to bypass all the tasks of this leg (including the U-Turn point) and were therefore unaffected by it.
  5. ^ Brooke & Robbie were last to arrive at the Southwest Marine Warehouse and were eliminated in the middle part of the final leg during the first Roadblock.

Leg 1 (United States → United States Virgin Islands)[]

Fort Christian on Saint Thomas in the United States Virgin Islands served as the Pit Stop for the first leg of the 25th season of The Amazing Race.

Airdate: September 26, 2014[14]

In this season's first Roadblock, one team member had to start from one of four landmarks on the beach (an anchor, a set of barrels, a ship's bell, or a ship's wheel) and use a traditional liquid compass, in which the direction they are traveling faces them on the compass, a shovel with a marking indicating 1 yard (0.91 m), and a unique set of directions, to search the beach for a treasure chest buried in the sand that held their next clue.

Additional tasks
  • At Duffy Square, teams were told to travel to the location of the Finish Line of the first season of The Amazing Race, leaving them to figure out it referred to the Unisphere at Flushing Meadows–Corona Park, to find their next clue.
  • At John F. Kennedy International Airport, teams had to book one of two flights to Saint Thomas in the United States Virgin Islands. The first five teams would be on the first flight in American Airlines with the last six teams departing forty minutes later on Delta Air Lines.
  • At Vendor's Plaza, teams had to sign up for one of six chartered seaplane flights, that could hold up to two teams, to Lovango Cay, each leaving at different times.
  • At Lovango Cay, teams took boats out to Carval Rock, where they had to climb up and along its length. At the end of the islet, teams jumped into the Caribbean Sea and then swam to a series of floating bottles that held their next clue.
  • On Blackbeard's Revenge, teams were greeted by a Blackbeard impersonator, who gave them their next clue, which told teams to pull themselves ashore in a rowboat attached to rope-lines.

Leg 2 (United States Virgin Islands → England)[]

One of the Detour choices in London had teams dressed in Queen's Guard uniforms and participated in Changing of the Guard ceremony.

Airdate: October 3, 2014[15]

This season's first Detour was a choice between About Face or Pancake Race. In About Face, teams traveled to Somerset House, where they dressed up as members of the Queen's Guard and had to perform the complex steps of the Changing of the Guard ceremony to the satisfaction of the parade commander to receive their next clue. In Pancake Race, teams traveled to the Victoria Tower Gardens, where they participated in a recreation of the annual Parliamentary Pancake Race. Each teammate had to dress up as a chef and then bake a pancake to the head chef's satisfaction. Once done, teams had to complete one lap around the course, while constantly flipping their pancakes, within one minute and fifteen seconds to receive their next clue. If either teammate dropped the pancake on the ground, ran out of time, or were judged to not be flipping the pancake enough, both team members would have to start over, baking new pancakes before being allowed to race again.

Additional tasks
  • Once in London, teams had to head to Tower Bridge and search for the Pearly King and Queen, who would give them their next clue.
  • In Oxford, teams had to punt themselves along the River Cherwell, with one team member standing on the short deck on the punt's stern (the "Cambridge End") propelling it through the water and the other standing on the punt's bow (the "Oxford End") waving a tiny Union Jack, one lap around Magdalen College Island to receive their next clue from the punting master.
  • At Christ Church College, racers were each given a bowler hat and an umbrella that they had to carry for the rest of the leg. Their previous clue informed them to tip their bowlers, which revealed "Churchill's Birthplace" printed on the inside of the hat, leaving them to figure out that it referred to Blenheim Palace.
    • The clue also instructed teams to open their umbrellas for a chance at the Express Pass, giving them the option to search Oxford for the Bear Inn rather than directly head to the Pit Stop. Only one team could claim the Express Pass but taking the option might cause them to lose valuable time and risk elimination.
Additional note
  • Teams were provided with two flights to London with the first six teams on the first flight and the remaining four teams on the second flight.

Leg 3 (England → Scotland)[]

One of the Detour choices in the Shetland Islands had some teams participated in the Scottish fire festivals of Up Helly Aa.

Airdate: October 10, 2014[16]

This leg's Detour was a choice between Pony Up or Light My Fire. In Pony Up, teams traveled to the Peats of Scalloway, where they had to cut 50 blocks of peat from a peat bank using a special spade called a tusker. They then loaded up a Shetland pony with two loads of peat, which they had to deliver up the hill to a farmer, who would give them their next clue once both trips were made. In Light My Fire, teams participated in an Up Helly Aa, building a traditional viking torch. After performing each step of the torch-making process, they had to have their work approved by a judge before moving onto the next step. Once done, teams traveled from the workshop to Hay's Dock where they presented the torch to the guizer jarl, who would light their torch and then award them their next clue.

Additional tasks
  • At the start of the leg, teams had to travel by train to Aberdeen where they picked up a Ford Focus at the Union Square parking area and then took a NorthLink ferry to Lerwick in Shetland Islands of Scotland. After docking in the Shetland Islands, teams had to drive themselves to the Royal National Lifeboat Station and search around for a puffin mascot, who would give them their next clue.
  • At Scalloway Castle, teams had to search the castle grounds for a knight and a Scottish Deerhound guarding a room that held their next clue.
  • At Berry Farm, teams worked like a Shetland Sheepdog and had to shepherd a flock of sheep through an obstacle course, making sure that they passed through the middle of a series of fences, and corral them in a pen at the bottom to receive their next clue.
  • After completing the sheep task, the shepherd James gave teams a Celtic brooch and instructed them to travel to where it was originally found leaving teams to figure out that the brooch was part of an 8th-century treasure horde on St Ninian's Isle, a small islet connected to Shetland via tombolo, where they would find the next Pit Stop.

Leg 4 (Scotland → Denmark & Sweden)[]

After arriving in Denmark, teams directly drove to Malmö, Sweden, crossing the famous Øresund Bridge before returning to Copenhagen for the rest of the leg.

Airdate: October 17, 2014[17]

  • Boat: Lerwick (Lerwick Ferry Terminal) to Aberdeen (Aberdeen Harbour)
  • Flight: Aberdeen (Aberdeen Airport) to Copenhagen, Denmark (Copenhagen Airport)
  • Malmö, Sweden (Stortorget (in Swedish))
  • Detour: Parking Space or Wedding Cake Copenhagen, Denmark (Sankt Jørgens Allé or Det Franske Conditori Bakery and Allegade 10 Restaurant)
  • Copenhagen (Ida Davidsen) Roadblock: "Who has a good memory for faces?"
  • Copenhagen (VM Houses) Pit Stop: Leg 4

This leg's Detour in Copenhagen was a choice between Parking Space or Wedding Cake. In Parking Space, teams traveled to Sankt Jørgens Allé, where they had to set up a parklet. Teams only had 30 minutes to set up one of two possible parklet designs in a parking space, and if it was set up exactly as the photograph guides, the judge would give them their next clue. If they were incorrect, they could use up the remaining time to make corrections, but once the 30 minutes were up they had to move over to a new parking space and start over. In Wedding Cake, teams traveled to the Det Franske Conditori bakery, where they had to put together a traditional wedding cake known as a kransekake with all of the necessary tiers and tiny Danish flags. They then had to transport the cake across town via Bullitt freight bicycle to the Allegade 10 restaurant. If the cake was correctly made upon arrival, the maître d'hôtel would approve the delivery and sign the team's receipt that they had to return to the head baker Henrik for their next clue.

In this leg's Roadblock, one team member had to take a smørrebrød (Danish sandwich) order from two patrons of the restaurant, remembering the menu number of the two sandwiches they each ordered, and then use a menu to memorize the four sandwiches' contents. They then had to relay the order to Ida Davidsen herself, and if they were correct, they had to deliver the sandwiches to the customers, who would give them their next clue.

Additional task
  • Once in Copenhagen, teams chose a marked Ford C-Max hybrid vehicles to drive across the Øresund Bridge to Malmö, Sweden. If they used less than 0.10 US gallons (0.38 L) of gasoline, they were automatically given their next clue. If they used more than 0.10 gallons, they had to answer a geography question given to them by a student: name the capital cities of the Scandinavian countries of Norway (Oslo), Sweden (Stockholm), and Denmark (Copenhagen).

Leg 5 (Denmark → Morocco)[]

While in Marrakesh, all of the tasks centered around the famous Jemaa el-Fnaa marketplace.

  • Flight: Copenhagen (Copenhagen Airport) to Marrakesh, Morocco (Marrakesh Menara Airport)
  • Marrakesh (Jemaa el-Fnaa)
    • Speed Bump: Getting the Hang of It Marrakesh (Le Cadeau Berbère and Riad Monceau)
  • Marrakesh (Bab Debbagh Tannery) Roadblock: "Who's ready to pull their hair out?"
  • Marrakesh (Ben Youssef Madrasa)
  • Detour: Twirl Time or Tea Time Marrakesh (Bob Magic Music and Jemaa el-Fnaa or Le Paradis du Thée and Palais Gharnata)

In this leg's Roadblock, one team member had to go into the tannery, collect three unfinished goat skins from a pool, and remove the remaining hairs from the skins to a tanner's approval. Then, they had to load three bundles of finished tanned hides onto a bike and deliver them to a nearby cobbler. After getting a receipt, they had to return to the tannery to trade it for their next clue.

This leg's Detour was a choice between Twirl Time or Tea Time. In Twirl Time, teams had to become Gnawa music street performers. They had to head to Bob Magic Music to pick up their costumes and instruments, as well as receive instruction on how to play them. While one team member played a drum to keep up a rhythm, the other played the krakebs while using their head to continuously twirl a tassel on their hat around for one minute to receive their next clue. In Tea Time, teams had to properly serve Moroccan mint tea. After picking up a traditional tea set from Le Paradis du Thée, which included a sugar box, mint tea, green tea, and a samovar, they then made their way to Palais Gharnata, where they got into costume and observed how to properly serve the tea. While one team member held the serving tray steady with one hand, the other had to ceremonially pour the tea into two cups at once, making sure to lift the kettles up to a particular height, to receive their next clue.

Additional task
  • At Jemaa el-Fnaa, teams had to find the food cart garage, bring out a food cart to the marketplace, and set up the cart, which involved preparing the kitchen and seating area, to the satisfaction of the cart owner to receive their next clue.

Leg 6 (Morocco)[]

During the Roadblock, racers zip-lined across the Moroccan canyons of the Atlas Mountains in Tahannaout.

Airdate: October 31, 2014[19]

  • Marrakesh (El Massi)
  • Marrakesh (Koutoubia Mosque)
  • Amizmiz (Abdessadek Boufoulouss Pottery Stand)

  • Hajar (Casbah d'If) Pit Stop: Leg 6

This leg's Detour, which took place at Oumnasse Casbah, was a choice between Camp or Cream. In Camp, teams had to set up a traditional Berber tent, making sure to furnish it with the provided rugs and tables, to the satisfaction of the judge to receive their next clue. In Cream, teams had to milk a nanny goat to fill up a milk pail. They then had to use a goat skin to traditionally churn the goat milk until they made at least 3 ounces (85 g) of butter to receive their next clue.

In this leg's Roadblock, one team member had to cross a series of rope-and-plank bridges and zip lines across a canyon in the Atlas Mountains. Once across to the other side of the canyon, they had to put together a wooden puzzle, making sure to match both the beveled edges and the painted designs. Once the puzzle was correct, they could receive their next clue and then join their partner on the other side of the canyon.

Additional tasks
  • At El Massi, teams searched for a marked feed station, where they had to pick up two bags of hay and then deliver the bags to a marked horse stable across town. They were then told to pick a horse-drawn carriage that would take them back into the center of Marrakesh, being sure to feed their horses an apple upon arrival, before they were given their next clue.
  • After riding back to the center of Marrakesh, teams had to choose a Ford Fiesta behind the Koutoubia Mosque, drive out to the Abdessadek Boufoulouss pottery stand in Amizmiz, and then search for their next clue hidden amongst the pots.
  • After the Roadblock, teams received a photo depicting Casbah d'If, which was the Pit Stop.

Leg 7 (Morocco → Italy)[]

Airdate: November 7, 2014[20]

In this leg's Roadblock, one team member had to drive a go-kart along the old route of the Targa Florio auto race around Mount Pellegrino within 4 minutes and 7 seconds to receive their next clue from racing legend Nino Vaccarella. If unsuccessful, they would have to follow a pace car back to the starting line and try again, about a 20-minute wait. Once racers got their next clue, they would be driven back down the mountain by a retired race car driver in a vintage car to reunite with their partner at Antico Stabilimento Balneare.

This leg's Detour was a choice between Painters or Posers. In Painters, which only had 4 available stations, teams traveled to the Tonnara Florio, where they had to restore a fresco while lying on their backs on a high scaffolding, as Michelangelo did according to legend when painting the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, to the satisfaction of the restoration artist before receiving their next clue from a priest. In Posers, teams traveled to Teatro Politeama Garibaldi, where they watched a series of opera performers. They then had to head back stage, identify the costumes worn by the performers, and write down the characters' names and their operas in the order the performers were on stage by writing the answers in a playbook to receive their next clue from the costumista.

Additional task
  • At Teatro di Verdura, teams found a series of tambourines marked with a departure time the following morning, 6:30 a.m., 6:40 a.m., and 6:50 a.m., telling them to dance the night away with the tarantella group with two teams allowed to claim a departure time.
Additional note
  • This leg was announced as The Amazing Race's 300th leg.

Leg 8 (Italy → Malta)[]

They then had to fill up a bucket with fish and then transport it back to shore until they filled up three large buckets (about 300 pounds (140 kg) of fish) to receive their next clue from the broker. In Coach, teams had to properly assemble and attach a side car onto a motorcycle using the provided tools, making sure to match the motorcycle to their provided side car, to receive their next clue from the head mechanic.

Additional tasks
  • At Baclaran Church, teams had to pick up their clue from the flea market's flower vendor at 6:30 a.m. the next morning. This clue instructed teams to then travel by jeepney to Salinas Specials at Rosario Municipal Plaza to receive their next clue.
  • At the rice fields in Naic, teams took part in a Switchback of the infamous ox task from Season 5. Teams had to use a plow attached to a water buffalo to dredge the rice paddy to find their next clue hidden somewhere in the mud. The clue buried in the mud directed teams to search on foot for the nearby Pit Stop.

Leg 11 (Philippines)[]

The Baluarte de San Diego in Manila's historic center of Intramuros was the Pit Stop on this leg.

Airdate: December 12, 2014[24]

For their Speed Bump, Brooke & Robbie had to unload the items from a man's broken padyak and load them onto a second padyak before they could continue racing.

This season's final Detour and second Blind Detour was a choice between This or That. In This, teams traveled on foot to the intersection of Bocobo and Malvar Streets, where they found that they had to play street basketball against a neighborhood team and score 21 points to receive their next clue. In That, teams traveled on foot to the intersection of the intersection of Pedro Gil Street and Pilar Hidalgo Lim, where found that they had to race padyaks around a marked course for four laps with each teammate pedaling the bicycle for two laps each. If teams could finish four laps of the course within 17 minutes and 55 seconds, they would receive their next clue.

In this leg's Roadblock, one team member had to deliver specified quantities of two coconut-based products, bunot (a coconut shell used to clean floors) and walis tingting (a broom made of palm fronds), to three different addresses within Divisoria Market, collect a receipt to confirm each delivery, and return all three receipts to receive their next clue.

Additional task
  • At the start of the leg, teams had to travel by jeepney to Rajah Sulayman Park in Manila to find their next clue.

Leg 12 (Philippines → United States)[]

Point Vicente Lighthouse in Rancho Palos Verdes was the Finish Line of the 25th season of The Amazing Race.

Airdate: December 19, 2014[25]

  • Flight: Manila (Ninoy Aquino International Airport) to Los Angeles, California, United States (Los Angeles International Airport)
  • Los Angeles (Downtown City Hall)
  • San Pedro (Terminal Island – Southwest Marine Warehouse) Roadblock: "Who wants to be a Hollywood action hero?" (Elimination Point)
  • San Pedro (Terminal Island – United States Coast Guard Base)
  • Wilmington (ConGlobal Industries) Roadblock: "Who can't contain themselves?"
  • Rancho Palos Verdes (Point Vicente Lighthouse) Finish Line

In this leg's first Roadblock, one team member had to learn to jump out of a third story window from a stunt coordinator. When ready, they had to pick up a satchel and then break through a window made of breakaway glass to land safely on a pile of boxes below, making sure to land on their back. Once done, they could retrieve their next clue inside their satchel, making sure to take off their safety gear before they left. The first three teams to reach the task were permitted to perform it, while the last team to arrive at this point was eliminated.

In this season's final Roadblock, the team member who did not perform the previous Roadblock had to search among over 15,000 shipping containers to find nine with the names of the cities visited on the season and remember a color-coded digit from that container (Amy had blue, Misti had orange, and Bethany had green). The numbers and cities were:

City Numbers
Saint Thomas 8 2 3
London 1 5 6
Lerwick 7 1 8
Copenhagen 6 0 1
Marrakesh 5 9 6
Palermo 1 5 0
Valletta 4 8 9
Singapore 9 2 3
Manila 8 3 4

Without using notes, they then had to write the numbers down on a requisition form in the order they visited the cities to receive their final clue.

Additional tasks
  • At the previous Pit Stop, Phil Keoghan gave teams a manila envelope along with their clue, which instructed them to travel to the "City of Angels": Los Angeles.
  • At Los Angeles International Airport, teams had to find a Ford Explorer Spot and use its voice control feature to listen to their next clue, which directed them to drive to Los Angeles City Hall. There, teams met the city's film clerk, who stamped a filming permit within their manila envelope and told them to go to the Southwest Marine Warehouse to hand over the permit to an assistant director in exchange for their next clue.
  • At Terminal Island's United States Coast Guard Base, teams participated in a search-and-rescue exercise with the Coast Guard. After a response boat took them out into the ocean, teams had to swim to a crash test dummy, set off a safety smoke bomb, and swim with the dummy back to the boat to receive their next clue.

Reception[]

Critical response[]

The Amazing Race 25 received positive reviews. Jodi Walker of Entertainment Weekly called this season a "good underdog story".[26] Daniel Fienberg of HitFix was critical of some structural decisions but was positive towards this season overall.[27] Alex Morella of "Survivor Oz" said "Well…it started really well…went bland in the middle for a bit…but finished strongly! I enjoyed this season and The Amazing Race put out a good product for its Silver Anniversary! I enjoyed the teams…quite a few of the challenges (although several better detours are needed in some legs…and no Morocco!)"[28] In 2016, this season was ranked 7th out of the first 27 seasons by the Rob Has a Podcast Amazing Race correspondents.[29]
