The Amazing Race 10 is the tenth installment of the American reality television show The Amazing Race. The Amazing Race 10 features twelve teams of two with a pre-existing relationship in a race around the world.

Professional models Tyler Denk and James Branaman were the winners of this season.

Production[]

Development and filming[]

The Amazing Race 10 spanned 40,000 miles (64,000 km) and covered 4 continents and 13 countries, the most countries visited in a season. Among them, six were previously unvisited by the series, including Mongolia, Kuwait, Mauritius, Madagascar, Finland, and Ukraine. None of those countries have been revisited by the series. It was also the first season to (nearly) circumnavigate the globe in a generally westward fashion, crossing the Pacific Ocean in the first leg and crossing the Atlantic on the final leg. Most other seasons transversed the globe in a generally eastward direction.

The Amazing Race 10 saw the show's first double elimination when in one leg, two teams were eliminated: one halfway through the leg, and the other at the end. It also introduced a new obstacle, the Intersection, which involved having two teams work together until otherwise instructed. If no other team was available when one team read the Intersection clue, they were required to wait for another team to arrive before proceeding together. The Intersection was also shown in conjunction with a Fast Forward allowing both teams from the first pair to complete the task to receive the benefit of the award. This season also saw the return of Roadblock at the first leg since Season 1 (but sometimes considered that this is the first season to featured the Roadblock at the first leg, as the first leg's Roadblock in Season 1 went unaired).

Additionally, the penalty for coming in last on a non-elimination leg was changed. Instead of being stripped of money and possessions, the last place team was "Marked for Elimination". This had a consequence for the following leg, where the marked team suffered a 30-minute penalty at the Pit Stop unless they were first to check-in, possibly allowing other teams to overtake them in the final placings for that leg.

During the Vietnam legs, all route markers were colored yellow and white rather than red and yellow (based on the original route markers in Season 1), so as to avoid confusion with the flag of the former independent state of South Vietnam (although the show would later use the regular markers in Vietnam as of Season 22). The second Vietnamese leg was also the first time in the series in which teams received money in local currency.

During the Ukraine leg, host Phil Keoghan was detained at the airport for traveling to the country with a New Zealand passport without a Ukrainian visa, which he had been informed prior to filming wasn't needed. He was released the next day after a worker from the American embassy processed a visa for him. After being released, Keoghan arrived at the Pit Stop ten minutes before the lead team arrived.^[2]

Episode 4 was selected by CBS for consideration in the 2007 Emmy Awards,^[3] and garnered five total nominations, including one for Outstanding Reality-Competition Program. The episode won for Outstanding Reality-Competition, the show's fifth consecutive win in that category, having won since the category was first awarded in 2003.

To date, this is the last Amazing Race season that did not either start or finish in the state of California.

Cast[]

Applications were accepted through January 20, 2006 (one week later than the original deadline). Semi-finalist interviews occurred in late February and early March, followed by finalist interviews in Los Angeles during late March and early April. Filming ran from May 27, 2006 to June 24, 2006.

The cast of The Amazing Race 10 was increased to 12 teams for the first time since Season 4. It included best friends, a couple, college cheerleaders, boyfriends, brothers, a team member with a prosthetic leg, recovered drug addicts, beauty pageant queens, and a pair of single mothers.

Lyn & Karlyn were the first all-female team to make the Final 3. This was also the first season where none of the Final 3 had placed last in a non-elimination leg.

Jamie Hill was later crowned Miss South Carolina USA 2008, and competed in the Miss USA Pageant in Las Vegas on April 11, 2008.^[4]

While Peter & Sarah were portrayed as a newly dating and bickering couple on the season (to the extent that Sarah "broke up" with Peter during their elimination in Kuwait), Sarah Reinertsen revealed that they were friends whose "dating" was non-existent and created to give them an interesting storyline, although she did say that her displeasure over Peter's cold and hectoring behavior on the show was genuine.^[5]

Following the overturning of the Defense of Marriage Act in 2013, Terry Cosentino proposed to Tom Rock in December 2013, having led Rock on a small-scale Amazing Race-styled trip through New York with assistance from Keoghan and other friends. The two married on November 12, 2016.^[6]

Future appearances[]

Dustin & Kandice and David & Mary were selected to race in The Amazing Race: All-Stars among a cast of returning teams from the first 10 seasons.^[7]

David & Mary also appeared on The View where they received gifts from the show, including vacations, a Ford Explorer, and a new house.^[8] In 2021, Tom Rock and Terry Cosentino competed on Ellen's Game of Games.^[9]

In this season's first Roadblock, one team member had to eat eyeballs from a fish head soup, a Chinese delicacy, to receive their next clue.

This season's first Detour was a choice between Labor or Leisure. In Labor, teams had to travel one mile (1.6 km) by pedicab to Run De Li Market, where they needed to use traditional Chinese bricks and methods to pave a 45-square-foot (4 m²) section of sidewalk in a specific pattern to receive their next clue. In Leisure, teams had to take a pedicab to Beihai Park to participate in a Chinese relaxation method known as Taiji Bailong, in which they need to successfully balance a ball on a paddle to receive their next clue.

Additional tasks

• At Seattle–Tacoma International Airport, teams had to book one of two provided flights to Beijing, China. Six teams would be on the earlier United Airlines flight, while the remaining six teams would be on the later Korean Airlines flight arriving one hour later.
• At the Meridian Gate in the Forbidden City, teams had to find a kiosk to pick a slot for one of three departure times in the following morning at 15-minute intervals, starting at 7:00 a.m., and the last team to arrive was eliminated.
• Upon departure the next morning, teams had to take to a sidecar motorbike to North Bank Road at Houhai and find the pedicab manager to receive their next clue.
• At the Juyongguan section of the Great Wall of China, teams had to use a rope to scale the wall and reach the Pit Stop.

Leg 2 (China → Mongolia)[]

This leg's Detour was a choice between Take It Down or Fill It Up. In Take It Down, teams chose a nomadic shelter called a ger, took the canvas and roof down, packaged it for transport, and loaded it onto a camel before receiving their next clue. In Fill It Up, teams had to take a cart pulled by a hynik, an indigenous ox, 500 yards (460 m) to a river to fill four water containers, then bring them back to fill a barrel. Once the water reached a designated line, a nomad would give teams their next clue.

In this leg's Roadblock, one team member had to string a traditional Mongolian bow and shoot a flaming arrow at a target 160 feet (49 m) away. After hitting the target, teams could run uphill to the Pit Stop at a pavilion.

Additional tasks

• At the start of the leg, teams had to sign up for one of two buses, each carrying five teams each and departing two hours apart starting at midnight, to Erenhot, where they had to travel by train to Ulaanbaatar.
• At Choijin Lama Temple, teams had to observe a ceremony before receiving their next clue instructing teams to drive a Soviet-era military jeep to Gorkhi-Terelj National Park, where they had to don traditional Mongolian army hats and ride horses 2.5 miles (4 km) until they reached a meadow with their next clue.
• After completing the Detour, teams rode the same horses back to the park's entrance.

Leg 3 (Mongolia → Vietnam)[]

In this leg's Roadblock, one team member had to choose a bicycle with a basket of flowers and sell enough to make at least 80,000₫, approximately US$5, to receive their next clue from the florist.

This leg's Detour was a choice between Fuel or Fowl. In Fuel, teams had to travel to the home of Nguyĕn Văn Thuý and make 30 acceptable round coal bricks, a traditional Vietnamese fuel source, by putting wet coal in a traditional press to receive their next clue. In Fowl, teams traveled to Nhà Thò, where they had to use traditional local materials to properly build an intricate Vietnamese birdcage to receive their next clue.

Additional task

• At Hỏa Lò Prison, teams had to search the grounds to find a room with John McCain's flight suit to receive their next clue.

Additional note

• Teams were not given any money at the start of this leg and were instructed that they could not beg or sell anything during the leg to earn money. Teams would only be allowed to keep any money they earned during the Roadblock. Teams were still allowed to buy airline tickets to Hanoi at the Chinggis Khaan Hotel using their provided credit card.

Leg 4 (Vietnam)[]

In this leg's Roadblock, one team member had to use a mechanical ascender to climb 90 feet (27 m) up the sheer face of the cliff at Hòn Yên Ngựa, retrieve their clue, and then rappel down to finish the task.

This leg's Detour was a choice between Over or Under. For both Detour options, teams were taken to the water by a junk then given a sampan to row to their task. In Over, teams had to row to a provisions ship, load supplies onto the sampan, then row to a floating village to deliver goods to the specific addresses on their invoice. When finished, teams rowed back to the provisions ship and present the finished invoice to the captain, who would give them their next clue. In Under, teams had to take a marked buoy and row the sampan to a pearl farm, where they chose a line of buoys and haul 30 baskets out of the sea and into their boats. They had to deliver the baskets to a pearl farmer to receive their next clue.

Additional tasks

• At the start of the leg, teams had to pick up 588,000₫ (approximately $37). They would then travel to Lý Thái Tổ Garden in Hanoi, where they had to listen to their next clue recited by loudspeaker: "Attention racers! Here is your clue! Taxi across the Red River to Bến Xe Gia Lâm. Then take a bus to Bến Xe Bãi Cháy. Then find the Hydrofoil Harbor." After traveling to the Hydrofoil Harbor in Hạ Long, teams would find a Yield and their next clue.
• The clue after the Roadblock instructed teams to travel by motorboat to Sửng Sốt Cave and search the caves for their next clue.
• After the Detour, teams had to take a junk to the Pit Stop at Soi Sim Island.

Leg 5 (Vietnam → India)[]

This leg's Detour was a choice between Wild Things or Wild Rice. In Wild Things, teams had to make their way nine miles (14 km) to Madras Crocodile Bank, locate pit 16, and help the workers wrangle and transport a marsh crocodile to a new pit to receive the next clue. In Wild Rice, teams made their way 200 yards (180 m) to Sri Sthala Sayana Perumal Temple, where they chose an outline of a traditional floral design shown on the temple floor. Using a picture for reference, they had to use colored powder made from rice to color-in the outline so that it matched the picture before receiving their next clue.

In this leg's Roadblock, one team member had to attend a driver's education class, then navigate the congested streets for a driving test while driving on the left-hand side of the road. When they passed the driving test and obtained an Indian driver's license, they received their next clue.

Additional task

• After the Roadblock, the team member who completed it had to drive their partner in their instructor's car to the Pit Stop at Chettinad House.

Additional note

• Due to Vietnamese regulations, teams couldn't purchase tickets at an airline counter, meaning they had to book their flight at a travel agency beforehand.

Leg 6 (India → Kuwait)[]

This season's first Fast Forward required one team to wear protective gear and use a flame retardant shield to approach a simulated oil fire with temperatures of over 1,000 °F (538 °C) on 6th Ring Road to retrieve the Fast Forward award from a clue box.

In this leg's Roadblock, one team member had to climb a ladder to the top of one of the towers, 610 feet (190 m) above the ground, to receive a satchel filled with puzzle pieces. They then had to go to the ground and assemble the puzzle that, when completed, would list their next destination, Al-Gharabally Street, in Arabic (الغربللي سوق شارع).

This leg's Detour was a choice between Manual or Automatic. In Manual, teams drove to Souk Sulaibiya and had to fill ten 110-pound (50 kg) bags of camel feed to a marked line. When all ten bags were filled, they had to transport them 100 yards (91 m) to a pallet and properly stack them to receive their next clue. In Automatic, teams went to the Kuwait Camel Racing Club, where they used a walkie-talkie to operate a voice activated robotic jockey attached to a camel. When the camel ran a 140-yard (130 m) course, a wrangler would give them their next clue.

Additional tasks

• At the start of the leg, teams received a mobile phone with a video message depicting a landmark, which they had to determine was Kuwait Towers. After flying to Kuwait City, they had to pick a marked vehicle and travel to the towers to find their next clue.
• At Souk Al-Gharabally, teams had to find a marked stall in the marketplace, where they found their clue for the Detour.

Leg 7 (Kuwait → Mauritius)[]

There was a Roadblock in this leg; however, it was not aired. The clue is clearly visible with Dustin & Kandice in one of the stills for the episode on the show's website.^[12]

This leg's Detour was a choice between Salt or Sea. In Salt, teams had to search through three giant piles of salt for a salt shaker containing their next clue. In Sea, teams had to choose a boat pilot, then travel 2.5 miles (4 km) by motorboat to Île aux Benitiers. There, they had to search the island using a treasure map to find the boat's sail that they had to carry back to the boat, attaching it to the boat, and sail back to the starting point to receive their next clue.

Additional task

• Upon arrival in Mauritius, teams had to search inside a marked car for a model boat, which had the clue "Isla Mauritia" and "Swim to Me". Teams had to determine their next location was Grand Baie, where they had to swim to the ship for their next clue.

Leg 8 (Mauritius → Madagascar)[]

This season's second Fast Forward required one pair of newly-joined teams had to travel by van to Analakely Market, where they would discover that each team member had to eat one full serving of cow lips, a French-inspired local delicacy, to win the Fast Forward award.

This leg's Detour was a choice between Long Sleep or Short Letter. In Long Sleep, the newly-joined teams had to travel by van 2.2 miles (3.5 km) to an open market, where they had to wrap eight mattresses with a cover and deliver them on foot approximately one mile (1.6 km) through the streets of Antananarivo to a specific address to receive their next clue from the homeowner. In Short Letter, the newly-joined teams had to travel by van 3.5 miles (5.6 km) to a paper-working station where they had to work together to successfully make 28 pieces of handcrafted paper to receive their next clue from an artisan. Once teams completed the Detour, they were no longer Intersected.

In this leg's Roadblock, one team member had to go up a steep staircase and find four different rubber stamp vendors with matching stamps to their clue: a boat, a train, an airplane, and a car. When they had collected all four stamps, they could then proceed to the Pit Stop at Cathedral Andohalo, where their teammate was waiting.

Additional task

• After arriving in Antananarivo, teams had to find the Black Angel statue in Lac Anosy and would find an Intersection, where teams were required to work together in pairs to make decisions and complete tasks until further notice.

This leg's first Detour was a choice between Swamp This or Swamp That, methods by which Finnish athletes keep themselves in shape during the warmer months. In Swamp This, teams have to trudge through a bog on cross country skis, completing a one-mile (1.6 km) course. In Swamp That, teams had to complete an obstacle course through a bog, requiring them to crawl, climb, and carry each other. At the end of both tasks, teams could grab their next clue from a clue box.

In this leg's first Roadblock, one team member had to ride a bike down a steep hill and search the Lohja mine for a marked dig site, where team members could retrieve a piece of limestone before returning to the starting point. They would then use the provided tools to break the limestone open to retrieve their next clue from inside.

In this leg's second Roadblock, one team member had to drive a Soviet T-64 Tank through a 1.5-mile (2,400 m) oval-shaped training course used for simulated military exercises to receive their next clue from an officer.

This leg's second musical-themed Detour was a choice between Make the Music or Find the Music. For both tasks, teams had to dress up in appropriate attire. In Make the Music, teams traveled three miles (4.8 km) to Dance & Groove, a hip hop dance club part of Kyiv's underground rap movement, and had to write and perform a rap song incorporating the names of all of the nations visited so far on the season to receive their next clue. In Find the Music, teams had to travel 2.5 miles (4.0 km) to the Ukrainian National Music Academy. There, they had to search through thousands of pieces of sheet music for Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's Concert Fantasia for Piano and Orchestra. When teams had the correct music, they needed to search 120 practice rooms to find one of six pianists to perform the piece for them before receiving their next clue.

Additional tasks

• After arriving in Helsinki, teams made their way to Kappeli Café and found a marked laptop, which they used to log in to AOL to watch a video from their loved ones before receiving their next clue from the owner of the café.
• After traveling by train to Tampere, teams had to travel by taxi to the city of Ylöjärvi to find Soppeenharjun Koulu, where they followed a marked path outside the school for their next clue.
• The clue after the first Detour instructed teams to travel by train to Turku, then to the Tytyri Limestone Mine in the town of Lohja, for the next clue.
• At Helsinki Olympic Stadium, teams were sent the top of the 236-foot (72 m) tower. They then had to do a face-first rappel known as an Angel Dive. As teams completed this task, they receive their clue to inform that they have to keep racing. On broadcast on the second episode, the clue instead instructed teams to travel to the country of the Chernobyl disaster, and had to determine that their destination was Ukraine. Upon arrival in its capital of Kyiv, they would find a Soviet-era Volga cars for transportation means along with their next clue.
• After completing the second Roadblock, teams were instructed to return to Kyiv and knock on the door of a specified apartment for their next clue.

Additional note

• Due to limited availability of flights out of Madagascar, teams were given tickets on a flight from Antananarivo to Paris, but were under no obligation to use them.

Leg 10 (Ukraine → Morocco)[]

In this leg's Roadblock, one team member had to dress like an ancient gladiator and ride a chariot. While racing, they had to pull down two colored flags matching the livery of their horse to receive their next clue.

This leg's Detour was a choice between Throw It or Grind It, each of each only had three workstations. In Throw It, teams traveled four miles (6.4 km) to a marked pottery shop in Guedara, where they had to throw two clay pots on a potter's wheel to the specification of the artisan to receive their next clue. In Grind It, teams traveled four miles (6.4 km) towards Ouarzazate to North Africa Horse, where they had to use a crushing mill to grind 77 pounds (35 kg) of olives and pack them into pressing sleeves before receiving their next clue from an olive miller.

Additional tasks

• At the Ouarzazate's Kasbah district, teams had to search for an antique shop known as Antiquittés du Sud. There, they had to pick up their next clue along with one of four pendants, one of which matched the one worn by the greeter at the Pit Stop and would award the holders the leg's prize.
• At Atlas Film Studios, teams had to search beneath the studio's backlot for the Yield along with their next clue.
• After completing the Detour, teams had to drive towards Marrakech until they reached a marker, directing them towards a Berber camp that served as the Pit Stop.

Leg 11 (Morocco → Spain)[]

In this leg's Roadblock, one team member had to obtain one pound (0.45 kg) of camel meat from a stall and bring it to Cafe 11. There, they had to ground, season, and skewer the meat, give the skewers to a chef to cook, and then to eat the dish to receive their next clue.

This leg's Detour was a choice between Lug It or Lob It. In Lug It, teams had to travel to Maremagnum Bridge at the end of Las Ramblas and get into giant costumes known as gigantes y cabezudos. In these giant costumes, they then had to walk over a mile to find a female giant in Plaça de Sant Felip Neri to receive their next clue. In Lob It, teams had to travel to Colònia Güell and take part in a tomato festival. While locals threw tomatoes at them as done in the festival, teams had to search a giant pile of tomatoes for the one with a clue inside.

Additional tasks

• From the Berber camp, teams had to drive to the country's largest city of Casablanca. There, teams have to make their way to Quartier des Habous and search the marketplace for their next clue.
• At Parc del Laberint d'Horta in Barcelona, teams had to search the maze for their next clue.

In this season's final Roadblock, one team member had to perform a 13,000-foot (4,000 m) tandem skydive, with a skydive instructor, over Normandy. The other team member would remain in the plane, was treated to a surprise nosedive. The skydiver would land on Omaha Beach, receive their next clue, and was taken to Bayeux station in a military jeep, where they were reunited with their partner who arrived by taxi.

This season's final Detour was a choice between Art or Fashion. In Art, teams had to go to an art studio, where they would pick up a painting and carry it through the streets to a painter who was waiting to complete it. Once the painting was finished, they would receive their next clue. In Fashion, teams had to travel by foot to Anatomy Fashion Studio, where they had to make a jacket, using the tools and materials provided, and put it on a mannequin for display. When the designer approved their work, she would give them their next clue.

Additional tasks

• Teams' first clue for the final leg instructed them to travel to "a church that has been under construction for over 124 years" leaving teams to figure out that their next clue was located at Sagrada Família.
• Once in Paris, teams had to head to the Eiffel Tower and ride the elevator to the top to find their next clue.
• Upon arrival in New York City, teams had to find the Daily News Building and search for their next clue by a giant globe. Their given clue had a photograph of Alamo with instructions to travel there by foot. There, teams had to find a woman in a yellow cap, who would give them their final clue.

Critical response[]

The Amazing Race 10 received mixed reviews. Linda Holmes of Television Without Pity was critical of this season's boot order but said "So was the season disappointing? It was not."^[13] Eric Goldman of IGN called it a solid season.^[14] Heather Havrilesky of Salon wrote that "after so much shared struggle and heartbreak, we find that we can hardly remember a single detail from our time with these strangers."^[15] In 2016, this season was ranked 14th out of the first 27 seasons by the Rob Has a Podcast Amazing Race correspondents.^[16] In 2021, Val Barone of TheThings ranked this season as the show's 5th best season.^[17]
