List of episodes

The Amazing Race 24 (also known as The Amazing Race: All-Stars) is the twenty-fourth installment of the American reality television show The Amazing Race that featured eleven teams of two – each returning from a previous edition for the first time since Season 18 – in a race around the world for a $1 million prize.

The season premiered on February 23, 2014 on CBS,[3] and the season finale was broadcast on May 18, 2014.

Father and son David "Dave" and Connor O'Leary from Season 22 were the winners of this season. They are the first parent-child team to win the American edition of the competition,[a] and at age 58 at the time of filming, Dave is also the oldest person to win the American edition of The Amazing Race.

Production[]

Development and filming[]

The UCLA Bruin Marching Band performed at the Starting Line for this "All-Stars" edition of The Amazing Race.[4][5]

Filming for the season began on November 16, 2013 at Cougar Stadium at the College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita, California. Filming was initially set to begin at the Rose Bowl, the UCLA Bruins football home stadium and a location previously visited during the Season 17 finale,[6] but was changed to Cougar Stadium due to "issues of availability to use the Rose Bowl."[7] The season's course traveled 23,000 miles (37,000 km) (third shortest route after the Family Edition and season 33), across three continents and through nine countries,[8] including China, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Italy, and a first time visit to Wales.[9][10]

Illusionist David Copperfield appeared in the first Roadblock during the finale in Las Vegas.[11]

At 31 legs each, both Jet & Cord and Flight Time & Big Easy held the title of the most number of legs competed on The Amazing Race after the conclusion of this season. This record was broken by Rachel Reilly (another competitor from this season) on The Amazing Race 31 before being broken by Leo & Jamal (also a team from this season) on the same season.[12]

Cast[]

Teams were selected from past contestants, going as far back as Season 14 including three competing for a third time.[9]

  • Brook & Claire from Season 17 were originally selected, but turned down the invitation due to work commitments.
  • Tim & Marie from Season 23 were originally selected, but turned down the invitation.[13]

The returning teams and their prior Amazing Race placements are:

  • From Season 18, "Unfinished Business":
  • From Season 20:
  • From Season 21:
  • From Season 22:
    • Caroline Cutbirth and Jennifer Wayne (previously Kuhle), friends and country singers (formerly of Stealing Angels), 4th place
    • Dave and Connor O'Leary, father and son, 8th place
    • Jessica Hoel and John Erck, engaged (dating in season 22), 9th place
    • Joey Graceffa and Meghan Camarena, best friends and YouTubers, 5th place
  • From Season 23:
    • Leo Temory and Jamal Zadran, cousins, 4th place
  • Composite team:
    • Mark Jackson, 5th place in Season 20 with best friend, William "Bopper" Minton, and Mallory Ervin, 3rd place in Season 18 (6th place in her original appearance in Season 17) with her father Gary.

Mark was originally set to compete with Bopper, but Bopper began showing signs of pancreatitis before arriving in Los Angeles for filming and was deemed unfit to compete by the production's medical team upon arrival.[14] As a last-minute replacement, Mallory was invited to fly from Nashville to compete as Mark's teammate.[15] This marked the first time that a team without a pre-existing relationship competed on The Amazing Race. On air, the team was dubbed "Team Kentucky" in reference to Jackson, Minton, and Ervin's home state.

Future appearances[]

Leo & Jamal and Rachel Reilly returned to compete on The Amazing Race 31.[16]

Not long after this season aired, Natalie and Nadiya later competed on the 29th season of Survivor, entitled San Juan Del Sur, making them the first Amazing Race contestants to compete on another CBS reality show. Nadiya was the first person voted out and Natalie won the season. Natalie then returned to Survivor to compete on Survivor: Winners at War alongside other winners where she finished as 1st runner-up.[17] Nadiya also appeared on Survivor: Winners at War as part of the loved ones visit.[18] Natalie then competed on the thirty-sixth season of the MTV reality show The Challenge and withdrew in the fifth episode after learning that she was pregnant.[19][20]

On May 25, 2016, Leo & Jamal, Flight Time & Big Easy, and Bopper & Mark appeared on an Amazing Race-themed The Price is Right primetime special. Rachel Reilly appeared on a Big Brother-themed episode the day before, and Natalie Anderson appeared on a Survivor-themed episode two days prior.[21] Flight Time & Big Easy also appeared on 100 Day Dream Home in 2021.[22]

Key
  • A red team placement means the team was eliminated.
  • A purple ε indicates that the team decided to use the first Express Pass on that leg. A magenta ə indicates the team had previously been given the second Express Pass and used it on that leg.
  • An underlined blue team's placement indicates that the team came in last on a non-elimination leg and had to perform a Speed Bump during the next leg.
  • A brown ⊃ or a cyan ⋑ indicates that the team chose to use one of the two U-Turns in a Double U-Turn; or indicates the team who received it;
indicates that the team was U-Turned, but they used the second U-Turn on another team.
Notes
  1. ^a b c d e The placements from Leg 1 and departure order for Leg 2 differ because some teams received time credits due to production difficulties.[23] The original placements before adjustment were: Margie & Luke (4th), Dave & Connor (3rd), Joey & Meghan (10th), Jessica & John (8th) and Caroline & Jennifer (9th).
  2. ^ Caroline & Jennifer received the Express Pass from Jet & Cord and then use it to bypass the Roadblock on Leg 2. Before using the Express Pass, Caroline chose to perform the Roadblock; this is reflected in the total Roadblock count.
  3. ^ After missing an earlier flight into Colombo, Margie & Luke were fallen far behind on the course by the time all of the other teams checked in. In an interview posted on the official website following their elimination, Margie revealed that she and Luke did not perform all of the tasks on the leg prior to their elimination due to logistics, but they did visit all of the locations on the racecourse.[24]
  4. ^ Jet & Cord used the Express Pass to bypass the Donkey Build Detour on Leg 8.
  5. ^ Caroline & Jennifer used their U-Turn on Brendon & Rachel; however, Brendon & Rachel had already passed the U-Turn point and were therefore unaffected by it.

Leg 1 (United States → China)[]

In Guangzhou, teams traveled to Canton Tower and rode its Ferris wheel to search for their next clue.

Airdate: February 23, 2014[26]

  • Santa Clarita, California, United States (College of the Canyons – Cougar Stadium) (Starting Line)
  • Flight: Los Angeles (Los Angeles International Airport) to Guangzhou, China (Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport)
  • Guangzhou (Jiangnan Avenue North (in Chinese) – Precious One, Silver Gorgeous, or Rich Forest & Beauty)
  • Guangzhou (Canton Tower)
  • Guangzhou (Haixinsha Grandstand) Roadblock: "Who's feeling wired?"
  • Guangzhou (Guangzhou Opera House) Pit Stop: Leg 1

In this season's first Roadblock, one racer had to dress in a special costume and perform 5 aerial somersaults while suspended 300 feet (91 m) in the air by wires attached to the stadium's towers to receive their next clue.

Additional tasks
  • At Cougar Stadium, teams had to find one of several UCLA Bruin Marching Band members with the Chinese symbols for Guangzhou (广州) on their shako's badge matching the badges displayed on the shakos of the band conductors, and bring the band member back to host Phil Keoghan. The first four teams that brought back band member with the correct shako would receive tickets on the Cathay Pacific flight that arrived one hour before the second flight with the remaining seven teams on the EVA Air. Teams could then drive a Ford Fusion Energi to Los Angeles International Airport and had park their hybrid cars at a recharging station.
  • Once in Guangzhou, teams went to the city's wedding boutique district on Jiangnan Avenue North and searched for one of three boutiques that had their next clue. Each store had a limited number of clues.
  • The clue from the bridal shops directed teams to find "the building with the bubbles on top", giving them a replica "bubble", leaving them to figure out it referred to Canton Tower.
  • At Canton Tower, teams had to select one of the bubble cars of the Ferris wheel located at the top of the tower and search for their clue, which would be revealed when the door to the car closed, forcing teams to wait for the car to make a full trip around the building (about 30 minutes)[27] before they were allowed to exit and proceed. Depending on which car they entered, the clue either informed teams to try again in another car or directed them to their next location: Haixinsha Stadium below the tower.

Leg 2 (China)[]

Teams ended the second leg in Guangzhou at Shamian Island, the island which hosts several colonial European buildings.

Airdate: March 2, 2014[28]

  • Guangzhou (Chen Clan Academy)
  • Guangzhou (Gate 5 Mall – Edaytown Guangzhou) Roadblock: "Who's the mechanic?"
  • Guangzhou (Guangzhou Children's Activities Center)
  • Detour: Featherball or China Cup Guangzhou (Liwanhu Park (in Chinese) or Sauna Center)
  • Guangzhou (Shamian Island Promenade) Pit Stop: Leg 2

In this leg's Roadblock, one team member had to correctly assemble a child's motorized car from a provided kit to the satisfaction of the "toy soldier" to receive their next clue.

This season's first Detour was a choice between Featherball or China Cup. In Featherball, teams had to play jianzi (a game similar to hackeysack that uses a shuttlecock) with two local players. Once the teammates successfully volleyed the shuttlecock a combined 10 times (volleys between the local players were not counted), they received their next clue. If at any time the shuttlecock fell to the ground, teams would have to start over. In China Cup, each team member had to receive a traditional massage involving cupping therapy to receive their next clue.

Additional tasks
  • At the Chen Clan Academy, teams had to watch a demonstration of martial arts students. At the end of the demonstration, the "master" would approach the teammates and stamp the name of their next destination in Mandarin Chinese on both of their foreheads.
  • After completing the Roadblock, teams had to deliver the toy car they assembled to the Guangzhou Children's Activities Center, using a provided strap kit to secure the car during transport, to receive their next clue.

Leg 3 (China → Malaysia)[]

The Roadblock in Sabah had racers rappelling down the Kiansom Waterfall.

Airdate: March 9, 2014[29]

In this leg's Roadblock, one team member had to take the Travelocity Roaming Gnome, travel through the treetops on a safety line, and then rappel down Kiansom Waterfall, a height of 10 stories, collecting their next clue on the way.

This leg's Detour was a choice between River Delivery or Run Through the Jungle. Before the Detour, teams had to build a bamboo raft which they used to travel down river, through rapids, to their Detour choice. In River Delivery, teams had to pick up several goods from a depot at the beginning of the task and then carry them down the river on their raft to the town of Kampung Tombung, delivering the goods to the village elder. In Run Through the Jungle, teams joined a Murut hunting guide who would lead them through the jungle to several fake bird targets. Using a blowgun, the racers had to each successfully knock over one bird target before being allowed to continue. After completing either Detour, teams were directed to return to their rafts and continue down river, receiving their next clue from a local river guide.

Additional note
  • There were only two available flights with limited seats from Guangzhou to Kota Kinabalu. The first six teams to check in at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport left three hours before the last three teams.

Leg 4 (Malaysia)[]

In Kuala Lumpur, teams visited the Petronas Towers, the tallest twin buildings in the world.

Airdate: March 16, 2014[30]

  • Kota Kinabalu (Prince Philip Park – Murut Longhouse) Roadblock: "Who's got a spring in their step?"
  • Flight: Kota Kinabalu (Kota Kinabalu International Airport) to Kuala Lumpur (Kuala Lumpur International Airport)
  • Kuala Lumpur (Jalan Ampang Intersection overlooking Petronas Towers)
  • Detour: Mix Master or Master Mix Kuala Lumpur (Traders Hotel – Skybar)
  • Gombak (Batu CavesLord Murugan Statue) Pit Stop: Leg 4

In this leg's Roadblock, one team member participated in a traditional Lansaran dance, in which the team member and a group of locals would bounce on a bamboo springboard. At the climax of the dance, the racer would use the springboard to launch themselves high enough to grab a flag of Sabah positioned above them, adjusted for their height, that they could exchange for their next clue. If more than one team was present, team members had three jumps before making another attempt.

This leg's Detour was a choice between Mix Master or Master Mix. In Mix Master, teams had to learn to scratch on a DJ table by a coach and then perform in front of a DJ and the crowd, receiving their next clue if each team member was able to replicate a series of seven record scratches to the DJ's approval. If teams did not perform the scratching properly, they had to allow other teams in line to perform before they could try again. Only four practice scratch tables were available. In Master Mix, teams had to stack seven cocktail glasses into a two-tier pyramid and then use a stack of mixing glasses to pour different colored cocktails into each glass simultaneously so none of the cocktails mixed to receive their next clue.[b]

Additional note
  • Only three flights from Kota Kinabalu to Kuala Lumpur were available to the teams. The first three teams to check in at Kota Kinabalu International Airport were allowed to take the first flight, which left 90 minutes before the second flight available to the next two teams, which itself was scheduled to leave 45 minutes before the last flight available to the remaining teams.[c]

Leg 5 (Malaysia → Sri Lanka)[]

One of the Detour choices paid tribute to the traditional angling fishermen of Sri Lanka.

Airdate: March 23, 2014[32]

This leg's Detour was a choice between Fishing Pole or Spin Control. In Fishing Pole, teams had to wade out into the surf and then climb up traditional fishing stilts from where they could fish. Once each team member caught a fish, they had to give them to a local fisherman in exchange for their next clue. In Spin Control, teams had to learn a traditional Kandyan dance and then perform it while balancing a spinning raban on a stick to receive their next clue from the lead dancer.

For their Speed Bump, Brendon & Rachel had to properly use silk screening to apply the final color to 15 T-shirts bearing the flag of Sri Lanka before they could continue racing.

In this leg's Roadblock, one team member had to properly sew a shirt in the garment factory. Once the floor manager approved the work, he directed the team to a heat transfer machine, which printed the name of their next location onto the shirt.

Additional task

Leg 6 (Sri Lanka)[]

In the Roadblock, racers had to get four tuk-tuks into a gasoline stand amid the chaos of a Sri Lankan street.

Airdate: March 30, 2014[33]

In this leg's Roadblock, one team member had to pick a color badge in the gas station's office and then search along a line of parked tuk-tuks for 4 that had the same color marker on their windshields. They then had to lead each tuk-tuk back to the gas station to fill their tanks with 3 litres (0.79 US gal) of gasoline to receive their next clue.

This leg's Detour was a choice between Trunk or Sheets. In Trunk, teams worked with an elephant to load a truck with timber. After chaining a special knot to the larger pieces of timber so the elephant could lift it, the racers and the elephant had to each carry three logs to the truck. After giving their elephant palm leaves, the mahout would give teams their next clue. In Sheets, teams made paper using an environmentally friendly and unique ingredient: elephant dung. After collecting dung in a wheelbarrow, teams took it over to the paper mill where it was mixed with water and paper scraps to make pulp. Teams then put the pulp on screens, making sure to press out the bubbles, to make five sheets of paper. After teams laid five pre-made sheets out to dry, the managing director would give them their next clue.

Additional task
  • At Ambepussa Rest House, teams had to find the "wise man" and listen to his flute performance before receiving their next clue.

Leg 7 (Sri Lanka → Italy)[]

The Roadblock in Rome had racers climbing the famous Spanish Steps.

Airdate: April 13, 2014[34]

For their Speed Bump, Caroline & Jennifer had to head to the Pantheon, pick up an antique Olivetti typewriter, and drop it off at the building it resembled, the Altare della Patria which locals call "the Typewriter", before they could continue racing.

This leg's Detour was a choice between Gladiator or Charioteer. For both Detours options, teams dressed up in ancient Roman costume. In Gladiator, teams learned a series of sword maneuvers to "battle" a seasoned gladiator to receive their next clue. If teams strayed from the battle sequence they were taught, they had to start over. In Charioteer, teams raced around a track using a radio-controlled chariot with one team member controlling speed and the other controlling direction. Once teams completed five laps within one minute and thirty seconds, indicated by a "fire" going out, they would receive their next clue.

In this leg's Roadblock, one team member had to get a postcard from a chestnut vendor and count the steps of the Spanish Steps, not counting the sidewalk at the bottom. Then, they had to add that total to the Roman numerals on the Obelisco Sallustiano in front of the Trinità dei Monti, indicating its year of construction. They had to write down their sum in Roman numerals on the back of the postcard and show it to a pair of Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn from Roman Holiday impersonators at the top of the steps. If they had the right answer of MCMXXIV (1,924), they would receive their next clue; otherwise, they had to go back down to the chestnut vendor to get a new postcard and try again.

Additional tasks
  • At the start of the leg, teams were told to travel to "The Eternal City" and find Hadrian's Bridge to retrieve their next clue, leaving them to figure out that they had to travel to Rome and find the Ponte Sant'Angelo.
  • After the Detour, teams were told to visit the "piazza of John Keats' unhappy Roman Holiday", leaving them to figure out it referred to the Piazza di Spagna at the base of the Spanish Steps.
  • After the Roadblock, teams were told to head to "where the leg of the race ends and the Via Flaminia begins": the Piazza del Popolo.

If they popped the balloon or ran out of time, they had to start over.

For their Speed Bump, Caroline & Jennifer had to deliver six jamónes ibéricos through the streets and alleys of Seville to Las Teresas Café Bar before they could continue racing.

This leg's Detour was a choice between Spanish Steps or Running with the Ballz. In Spanish Steps, teams had to learn a traditional flamenco routine and correctly perform on stage to receive their next clue. In Running with the Ballz, teams wore bumperz designed to look like bulls and ran through the streets of Seville, trying to avoid other "bulls", and looking for fragments of a motto printed on several posters along the route. Once teams reached the end of the course and could recite the full motto ("A matador never thinks about his own death") to the mayoral, they would receive their next clue.

Additional task

Airdate: May 11, 2014[38]

In this leg's Roadblock, one team member had to ride on one of Pontcysyllte Aqueduct's canal boats and work with a Welsh language instructor to learn a verse of the Welsh poem "Y Sipsi!". After the 15-minute boat ride to the other side of the aqueduct was complete, the team member disembarked the boat and had to recite the poem verbatim from memory to a waiting linguist to receive their next clue.

This season's final Detour was a choice between Shoot It or Boot It. In Shoot It, teams participated in clay pigeon shooting using a 12-gauge shotgun and had to hit a total of 16 clay pigeons to receive their next clue. In Boot It, teams participated in boot throwing. After searching through a pile of Wellington boots to find a pair of either size-9 or size-11 boots, teams had to fill them with water and throw them along a course until they reached the finish line. At the end of the course, a "Wellie official" would confirm that the teams had used the correct-sized boots and then give them their next clue.

Airdate: May 18, 2014[39]

  • Carden (Carden Park Luxury Hotel) (Pit Start)
  • Flight: London (Heathrow Airport) to Las Vegas, Nevada, United States (McCarran International Airport)
  • North Las Vegas (Desert)
  • Las Vegas (MGM Grand Las Vegas) Roadblock: "Do you believe in magic?"
  • Las Vegas (Neon Museum Boneyard)
  • Las Vegas (The Mirage)
  • Henderson (Maverick Helicopters) Roadblock: "Who wants to be a UFO?"
  • Las Vegas (Las Vegas Motor Speedway) Finish Line

In this leg's first Roadblock, one team member participated in an illusion with magician David Copperfield. After opening up the box they previously dug up from the desert, retrieving the keys inside, the team member performing the Roadblock was shackled to the inside of a box and once the box was closed, their partner would hand over the keys through a hole in the box. Copperfield then escorted the teammate sitting out the Roadblock to a television monitor to watch their partner attempt the challenge. After the team member inside the box found the right key and unlocked the shackles, they had to retrieve lockpicks from the top of the box, after which the box was lifted off of the ground and lit on fire. Once the racer in the box said that they were complete, the partner, under Copperfield's instruction, set off a series of switches that dropped the box into a burning pile of wood and set off a fiery explosion. Copperfield then informed the partner that they would have to get the fire department's assistance, and the racer in the box would appear wearing a firefighter uniform, completely unharmed. Copperfield would then give them their next clue, after a bit of sleight of hand.

In this season's final Roadblock, the team member who did not perform the previous Roadblock had to get in a helicopter, wearing a special futuristic jumpsuit, and search the Las Vegas Strip for a sign at the Aria Resort and Casino that told them the name of their drop zone and location of the Finish Line: the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. After informing their pilot, they would tandem skydive 10,000 feet (3,000 m) onto the racetrack's infield, spewing fireworks along the way, to join their partner and cross the Finish Line.

Additional tasks
  • After landing in Las Vegas, teams were chauffeured by a driver in one of three Ford Explorers to an isolated location in the desert. Upon arrival, the chauffeurs simply told the teams to get out of the car and dig. Teams eventually unearthed a box that said "Property of David Copperfield". After retrieving the box, they returned to the car and were driven to the MGM Grand.
  • The clue from the Neon Museum's "bone yard" instructed teams to take a light bulb from a silver and red question mark sign and take it with them to The Mirage.
  • At The Mirage, teams were hoisted on a window washing scaffold to one of the hotel's signs atop the tower, where they had to replace all of the light bulbs in the sign's letter "I". Once they replaced all of the bulbs, they had to tell the employees how many bulbs they used (241) in order to receive their next clue.

Reception[]

Critical response[]

The Amazing Race 24 received mostly negative reviews. The casting choices for this season were largely maligned with Andy Dehnart of reality blurred saying that "I couldn’t believe that these people were favorites, and collective reaction seemed to validate that."[40] Daniel Fienberg of HitFix called this season horrible and a joke but acknowledged that he "didn't think that was an all-time bad 'Amazing Race' season. It had some good Legs and some good moments and it had a deserving winner."[41] Reece Forward of Screen Rant wrote that this season had "a sloppy all stars cast with lackluster tasks."[42] In 2016, this season was ranked 26th out of the first 27 seasons by the Rob Has a Podcast Amazing Race correspondents.[43] Conversely, Richard Gorelick, Chris Waldmann, and Melissa Wilson of The Baltimore Sun wrote "All in all, it was a pretty good season, with some impressively staged tasks."[44]
