Deoghar Airport (ICAO: IN-0090)[2] is located in Deoghar, in the state of Jharkhand, India. The airport is spread over 654 acres (265 ha). The airport is being constructed to handle Airbus A320 type of aircraft.[3] Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of development of the airport in Jharkhand on 25 May 2018.[4]The airport is expected to be operational from January 2022.[5]

Development[]

The Jharkhand government had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) in 2013, to develop the airport, to promote religious tourism in the state.[6]

The government later signed a tripartite MoU with the AAI and DRDO in March 2017, to develop the airport for non-military use of Airbus A320 category aircraft.[7]

AAI proposed to upgrade the airport at a cost of INR 400 crore.[8] The upgrade includes extension of existing runway to 2,500 m (8,200 ft) and 45 m (148 ft) wide, construction of a 4,000-square-metre (43,000 sq ft) terminal building to handle 200 passengers per hour, a mobile air traffic control, apron for two A320 aircraft, taxiways and an isolation bay. The terminal building will have six check-in counters and two arrival belts with a peak hour handling capacity of 200 passengers. The design of the terminal building will be inspired from the Baidyanath Temple structure, and there will be paintings of Adivasi art, handicrafts and local tourist sites inside the airport. A DVOR/DME navigational facility is also planned. Construction commenced in January 2018.[9][10]

As of December 2021, the airport is 95% completed, with the terminal's both exterior and interior work finished. The runway, approach road and ATC tower works are also completed. A team from Kolkata Airport visited Deoghar in the first week of December and successfully conducted a runway test, Deoghar Airport has received most of it's license's for the airport operation. Godda MP Nishikant Dubey met PM Narendra Modi, requesting him to visit Deoghar for the airport inaugration.[11]
