The Eastern Suburbs is the metropolitan region directly to the east and south-east of the central business district in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.
Location[]
The Eastern Suburbs (region of Sydney, New South Wales) refers to the residential, commercial and industrial areas that are situated to the east and south-east of the Sydney central business district, around the southern shore of Sydney Harbour to the Pacific Ocean beaches and continuing on to the port and airport at Botany Bay. The region includes most of the City of Sydney and its suburbs as well as suburbs within local government areas of the Municipality of Woollahra, Waverley Council, City of Randwick and parts of Bayside Council.[2]
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) however, limits its definition of the “Eastern Suburbs Statistical Subdivision" to comprising just the Woollahra, Waverley and Randwick local government areas. As at the 2016 census, this ABS region had an estimated population of 267,037,[1] up from 249,546 in the 2011 census.[3]
For descriptive purposes, the Eastern Suburbs can be grouped into four parts:
Harbour
The suburbs surrounding the southern shores of Sydney Harbour are Vaucluse, Rose Bay, Darling Point, Double Bay, Point Piper, Woollahra, Paddington, Edgecliff, Woolloomooloo, Watsons Bay, Potts Point, Rushcutters Bay, Elizabeth Bay, Bellevue Hill, Waverley and Bondi Junction.
Ocean
This area includes well known and popular ocean and beach-side suburbs of Dover Heights, Bondi, Bronte, Tamarama, Clovelly, Coogee, Maroubra, Malabar and Little Bay.
Inner City
To the west of Bondi Junction are the inner-city suburbs of Darlinghurst, Surry Hills, Redfern, Waterloo, Moore Park, Zetland, Centennial Park, Paddington, Queens Park and the localities of Kings Cross and Green Square.
South East, Port and Airport
The southern portion of the Eastern Suburbs includes Kingsford, Kensington, Randwick, Alexandria, Rosebery, Mascot, Chifley, Matraville, Eastlakes, Pagewood, Daceyville, Hillsdale, Eastgardens, Botany and La Perouse.
Landmarks[]
The largest commercial areas in the Eastern Suburbs are found at Bondi Junction, North Randwick, Maroubra and Double Bay. The Eastern Suburbs features some of Sydney's well-known beaches such as Bondi Beach, Bronte Beach, and Coogee Beach. The University of New South Wales is one of Australia's leading universities located in Kensington.

Sporting teams[]
In the National Rugby League, the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney are represented by two professional clubs: the Eastern Suburbs District Rugby League Football Club, the Sydney Roosters and, the South Sydney Rugby League Football Club, the Rabbitohs. While the Roosters traditionally represent the north-east part of the Eastern Suburbs, the Rabbitohs traditionally represent the south-east part. These two teams share a strong, local Eastern Suburbs fan-base.
In the Australian Football League (AFL) the Sydney Swans are a professional Australian rules football club. The Swans' headquarters and training facilities are located at the Sydney Cricket Ground, the club's playing home ground since 1982.
The New South Wales cricket team (currently named the NSW Blues) are professional first class men's cricket team also based at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The team competes in the Sheffield Shield Australia's first class interstate cricket competition.
The Sydney Sixers are a NSW professional franchise men's cricket team, competing in Australia's domestic Twenty20 cricket competition, the Big Bash League (BBL).
The Eastern Suburbs Football Association Inc. (ESFA) is the delegated authority governing football (soccer) in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney. ESFA aims to develop football for the entire community; irrespective of age, colour, gender and disability. ESFA offers women's competitions including AAW Premier League running from April through to August. Competition and coaching is offered for junior and senior grades.
