The Homeland Fighters' Party (Malay: Parti Pejuang Tanah Air, Jawi: ڤرتي ڤجواڠ تانه اءير, PEJUANG) is a political party of Malaysia, formed in August 2020 by the former 4th and 7th Prime Minister of Malaysia, Mahathir Mohamad against the ruling Perikatan Nasional and Barisan Nasional coalition led by Former 8th Malaysian Prime Minister and president of the Malaysian United Indigenous Party, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin. PEJUANG Party was approved and fully registered in 8 July 2021 by the Registration of Societies (ROS) and the use of the PEJUANG logo was authorized by the Malaysian Election Commission (SPR). Tun Mahathir Mohamad, The Chairman of PEJUANG Party has received approval letters from Home Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin and the Registrar of Societies (ROS) in 8 July 2021.
History[]
The party was formed by former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, who was also the former Chairman of the Malaysian United Indigenous Party. He resigned as Prime Minister on 24 February 2020,[2] the same day BERSATU announced its departure from the then ruling Pakatan Harapan coalition.[3] In March, Muhyiddin Yassin, the President and the acting Chairman of BERSATU was appointed the new Prime Minister. However, Mahathir and five other MPs including Mukhriz Mahathir (former Menteri Besar of Kedah), Maszlee Malik (former Minister of Education), Shahruddin Md Salleh (former Deputy Minister of Works), did not back Muhyiddin and his new Perikatan Nasional government. They remained members of BERSATU until 28 May when they were sacked from the party.[4]
The logo of PEJUANG party consisted of a stylised Jawi letter, ڤ (P), which is the first letter in the word "Pejuang".
In August, Mahathir announced that he would be forming a new Malay-based party.[5] On 12 August, it adopted the name Parti Pejuang Tanah Air.[6] The party contested in the Slim by-election on 29 August, but its candidate Amir Khusyairi, lost to the Barisan Nasional candidate Mohd Zaidi Aziz. On 21 August, Syed Saddiq announced he would rather form a new party, instead of joining the PEJUANG. He later formed and registered the Malaysian United Democratic Alliance in on 17 September.[7]
In January 2021, the Registrar of Societies (RoS) rejected the registration of the party.[8] On 25 June, it had been granted a court order by the High Court compelling home minister to make a decision concerning its pending application to register itself as a political party within the next 14 days.[9]
in 8 July 2021, PEJUANG Party was finally fully registered (approved) and officially recognised as a political party.[10] Tun Mahathir Mohamad, The Chairman of PEJUANG Party has received approval letters from Home Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin and the letters from the Registrar of Societies (ROS) about this party has been successfully approved.
in 16 April 2021, PEJUANG Deputy-President Marzuki Yahya said if Pejuang is destined to work with the Perikatan Nasional (PN), it is only done in the interest of the country.[11]
