Their first child, and the only one to survive to adulthood, was born on June 21, 1783, and also named Theodosia. Burr also adopted Prevost's five children from her first marriage, including Augustine James Frederick Prevost (1765–1842) and John Bartow Prevost (1766–1825). Burr later adopted two sons, Aaron Columbus Burr and Charles Burdett, who were reputed to be his biological children.[5] He acknowledged two illegitimate daughters Frances Ann (born c. 1829), and Elizabeth (born c. 1833).[6]

Burr also fathered two children with Mary Emmons:

  • Louisa Charlotte Burr (b. 1788) worked most of her life as a domestic servant in the home of Elizabeth Powel Francis Fisher, a prominent Philadelphia society matron, and later in the home of her son Joshua Francis Fisher.[7] She was married to Francis Webb (1788–1829), a founding member of the Pennsylvania Augustine Education Society, secretary of the Haytien Emigration Society formed in 1824, and distributor of Freedom's Journal from 1827 to 1829.[7] After his death, Louisa remarried and became Louisa Darius.[7] Her youngest son Frank J. Webb wrote the 1857 novel The Garies and Their Friends.[7]
  • John Pierre Burr (c. 1792–1864) became a member of Philadelphia's Underground Railroad and served as an agent for the abolitionist newspaper The Liberator. He worked in the National Black Convention movement and served as chairman of the American Moral Reform Society.[8]
