  • Top left: Ito Hirobumi became the first Prime Minister of Japan in 1885.
  • Top right: Katsura Tarō was the longest serving Prime Minister in the Imperial period and held the office on three different occasions.
  • Bottom left: Eisaku Satō was the longest uninterrupted serving Prime Minister, holding office from 1964 to 1972 until his record was surpassed by Shinzō Abe in August 2020.
  • Bottom right: Shinzō Abe, the longest serving Prime Minister, holding office from 2006 to 2007 and again from 2012 to 2020.

The Prime Minister of Japan is the chief of the executive branch of the government of Japan and leader of the Cabinet of Japan. This is a list of prime ministers of Japan, including those of the Empire of Japan, from when the first Japanese prime minister (in the modern sense), Itō Hirobumi, took office in 1885, until the present day. The office is currently held by Yoshihide Suga. Those prime ministers under the Meiji Constitution had a mandate from the Emperor. The "electoral mandates" shown are for the lower house of the Imperial Diet that was not constitutionally guaranteed to have any influence on the appointment of the Prime Minister.

Daijō-kan[]

The office of Daijō-daijin (太政大臣, Chancellor of the Realm of Japan) was the equivalent of what would become the office of Prime Minister. It was an ancient role which had been discontinued in the 18th century and briefly revived during the Meiji era.

Daijō-daijin[]

Minister of the Left[]

  • 1874–1875 Shimazu Hisamitsu (島津久光) (1817–1887)
  • 1880–1885 Prince Arisugawa Taruhito (有栖川宫熾仁親王) (1835–1895)

Minister of the Right[]

  • 1869–1871 Sanjō Sanetomi (三条実美) (1837–1891)
  • 1871–1883 Iwakura Tomomi (岩倉具視) (1825–1883)

The office of Daijō-daijin was abolished in December 1885 with the appointment of Itō Hirobumi in the new position of Prime Minister.
