The Maternidad Obrera de Marianao hospital in Havana, Cuba was designed by the engineer Emilio de Soto Segura, its construction began in April 1939.[1] It was completely erected in less than two years and the hospital has operated since 1941.[2][3]

History[]

The Maternidad Obrera de Marianao hospital was officially inaugurated on September 20, 1941, by the then President of the Republic, General Fulgencio Batista y Zaldivar, as well as other various government officials and members of the General Staff of the nearby Columbia Camp.[1] This was primarily a military installation that was very close to the hospital.[2]

This building is among the most important exponents of Art Deco in the city of Havana, along with the Colegio Nacional de Arquitectos de Cuba, the López Serrano Building, the Bacardí building and the América and Fausto cinemas. It was awarded the Gold Medal Award of the National College of Architects in 1942.[2]

At the top of the entry portico is the white ceramic sculpture of a mother and her son a monument made by the Cuban sculptor Teodoro Blanco (1902-1972).[4]

The name of the building changed in 1966 to "Eusebio Hernández Pérez" Maternity Hospital, in honor of this man who was an important general in the struggles for the nation's independence and professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology during the year 1900. Despite this, it is popularly known by all Cubans by its original name, Maternidad Obrera.[2] The building is presently in a bad state of disrepair. [2]
