- ^ A Independent Republican Speaker, Charles X. Seward, was elected with the support of Democrats, Independents, Populists, and members of the Farmers' Alliance who ran as Independents. This alliance, with the Farmers' Alliance and the Populists being predominant, ran and organized the chamber.[2]
