Sal's Pizza is a chain of Italian restaurants based in New England.[1][3] The chain is owned by Sal's Group, owner of Salvatores, Mary's Pasta & Sandwiches, and Riverwalk Properties.[4] The company operates as a franchise, which prepare a combined total of over 60,000 pizzas weekly.[1][5]

History[]

Sal's Pizza first opened in Salem, New Hampshire, founded by Sal and Nick Lupoli in 1990.[1][6] The first store opened at a time when Italian-based restaurant chains began to popularize. The store spawned franchises, and eventually grew to operate stores throughout the Boston and southern New Hampshire regions.

Sal's Pizza has since expanded beyond the New England region; The company operates single locations in California,[7] Florida,[7] and Arizona.[8] The company offers franchising,[9] and they are known for offering a three-pound, 19-inch pizza.[1][10]

International expansion[]

Sal's Pizza opened its first New Zealand store in Auckland in 2009. The New Zealand franchise is led by co-founder Nick Turner.[11] By March 2018, Sal's Pizza had established 22 branches in New Zealand. That same month, the company opened its first Australian store in Melbourne.[12][13] In late August 2021, Sal's Pizza opened its 34th store in the South Island town of Richmond near Nelson.[14]
