  1. ^ Senator Chris A. Brown, who had already announced he would not stand for re-election, resigned on July 21 to join the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs. Vince Polistina, who is the Republican candidate for the open seat in the general election, won an August 4 special county convention to succeed Brown. The Senate has not been in session since this convention and will not convene until after Election Day. Although Polistina's election was certified by Secretary of State Tahesha Way, and he was administered the oath of office by a retired Superior Court judge, Senate President Stephen M. Sweeney has refused to swear him in as Senator, and the non-partisan Office of Legislative Services does not consider Polistina the incumbent.[13]
