This is a list of rail accidents since 2020. This list does not contain incidents with singular fatalities of pedestrians who were not in a vehicle.

- 1 January – United States – A BNSF freight train strikes a landslide and derails near Bonner's Ferry, Idaho. Both locomotives end up in the Kootenai River. Two crew are rescued by boat.[1]
- 2 January – Netherlands – A passenger train derails between Den Haag Centraal and Den Haag Ypenburg stations.[2]
- 7 January – Mexico – 7 people die and more than 30 are injured when a Ferromex train strikes a bus at a level crossing.[3]
- 23 January – United Kingdom – A freight train derails between Leyton Midland Road and Walthamstow Queens Road stations, London, damaging more than 2 miles (3.2 km) of track.[4]
- 24 January - United States - In Hartford, Connecticut, A Amtrak Train collided with a maintenance truck which is stuck on a railroad crossing, the train hit the truck, 6 people were injured.[5]
- 28 January – United Kingdom – A freight train hauled by a Class 70 locomotive derails at Eastleigh, Hampshire.[6][7] The cause is a track defect.[8]
- 29 January – Australia– A freight train derails near Barnawartha, Victoria and collides with a passenger train coming in the other direction.[9]

- Italy – Livraga derailment: A Frecciarossa high-speed train derails at Livraga. Two people are killed and 31 are injured.
- Canada – A Canadian Pacific freight train carrying crude oil derails and catches fire at Guernsey, Saskatchewan. The village is partly evacuated. The Canadian government halves the speed limit for freight trains carrying hazardous materials as a result.[10]
- 13 February – United States – Five cars of a 96-car CSX freight train derail in Draffin, Kentucky due to a rockslide. The locomotives and train cars caught fire, causing evacuations of nearby communities. Two crew members from the train were taken to a hospital.[11]
- 20 February – Australia – 2020 Wallan derailment: Sydney to Melbourne XPT derailed near Wallan, Victoria. Two people were killed, one was airlifted to hospital.[12]
- 23 February - United States - In Austin, Texas, A Amtrak 21 train collided with a bus, the bus was carrying 58 passenger, no problems reported but the front of the bus has came off when the train hit it, the train crash happen at 6:30 PM.[13]
- 24 February - United States - In Pompano Island, Florida, A Brightline train collided with a car, 2 people were killed.[14]
- 24 February – Thailand – a freight train no.722 from Hat Yai Junction to Bang Sue and a passenger train No.37 collide head on at Pak Tho Railway Station in Ratchaburi at about 18:30. At least 30 people are injured.[15][16]
- 26 February – Netherlands – a passenger train collides with a lorry on a level crossing at Udenhout, North Brabant. No injuries are reported amongst the 250 passengers on the train.[17]
- 28–29 February – Pakistan – a passenger train collides with a bus on a level crossing near Rohri, Sindh. – Sukkur bus-train collision
- 4 March – Canada – Freight train derails in Kingston, Ontario[18]
- 5 March
- 9 March – Japan – A Geibi Line train rolls over due to sediment on the track. No injuries were reported.[21]
- 10 March – Mexico – A Mexico City Metro train crashes into another at Tacubaya station. 1 person dies and 41 are injured.[22]
- 12 March – United States – A CSX Train derails near Tiffin University, Ohio.[23]
- 23 March – United Kingdom – a Class 66 locomotive runs through a buffer stop at Bromsgrove, ending up fouling a running line. A Class 170 diesel multiple unit collides with the derailed locomotive. No injuries are reported amongst the six people on board.[24]
- 27 March – 2020 New York City Subway fire: A series of fires on the IRT Broadway - Seventh Avenue Line and IRT Lenox Avenue Line caused a fire on the 2 train at 110th Street station on the Lenox Avenue Line killing the train operator and injuring 16 other people.
- 30 March – China – A passenger train (Jinan – Guangzhou) derails after colliding with debris on the track due to a landslide in Hunan Province, 1 onboard railroad police officer was killed and 127 people were injured.[25]
- 31 March – United States – A train is intentionally derailed near USNS Mercy, though no injuries are reported. The engineer, 44-year-old Eduardo Moreno, was arrested by federal authorities and charged with train-wrecking.[26]
- 3 April – Germany – A freight train collides with a concrete piece of a bridge near a construction site. The engineer is killed and 3 others were injured.[27]
- 20 April - United States - In Montgomery County, Maryland A freight train collided onto a truck, 1 person was injured.[28]
- 29 April – Norway – A passenger train collides with a lorry on a level crossing at Skien and is derailed.[29]
- 8 May – India – Aurangabad railway accident – A goods train runs over and kills 16 migrant labourers who were walking to their homes in Madhya Pradesh and slept on the railway tracks, believing that trains would not be running (only passenger trains were stopped, while goods railway services continued to function) due to a nationwide lockdown in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.[30]
- 8 May – Japan – The front carriage of a local service on the JR Sotobō Line in Chiba Prefecture derails between Awa-Kamogawa and Awa-Amatsu stations. Around 20 passengers and crew were on board the train when it derailed.[31]
- 18 May – United States – A Buffalo & Pittsburgh train derails in East Aurora.[32]
- 22 May – Netherlands – Hooghalen train crash – A passenger train collides with an agricultural vehicle. The train driver dies while two people are injured.[33]
- 23 May – Iran – A passenger train derails between Hamedan and Mashhad, injuring 5.[34]
- 29 May - United States - In Bainville, Montana, An Amtrak Train collided with a Tractor at a railroad crossing, 1 person was killed.[35]
- 30 May – United States – 13 cars derail in Linden, Virginia.[36]
- 2 June – Spain – A high-speed passenger train collides with a lorry that had fallen from a bridge on to the track at La Hiniesta and derails. Two people are killed.[37]
- 25 June – Taiwan – A Xihu Sugar Factory passenger train is derailed in a collision with a lorry at Xihu township. No injures are reported amongst the 270 passengers.[38]
- 26 June – United States – a freight train is derailed on a bridge in Phoenix, Arizona.[39]
- 7 July – Czech Republic – On the Karlovy Vary–Johanngeorgenstadt railway a ČD Class 814 Regionova and ČD Class 844 RegioShark collide head-on at about 50 km/h (31 mph). 2 people were killed and 24 were injured.[40] In total there are 33 passengers aboard both trains.[41]
- 15 July – Czech Republic – A ČD Class 471 train collides with a freight train at Český Brod. One person is killed and 35 are injured.[42]
- 29 July – United States – A freight train derails on a bridge in Tempe, Arizona. The wreck catches fire and the bridge collapses.[39]
- 31 July – Portugal – Soure train crash: An Alfa Pendular high-speed passenger train derails after collision with a catenary maintenance vehicle. Two people are killed and 43 are injured.[43]
- 12 August – United Kingdom – Stonehaven derailment: A ScotRail Inter7City passenger train derails near Carmont following stormy weather killing three people and injuring six.[44]
- 19 August – Italy – Carnate derailment: A passenger train runs away crewless from Paderno d'Adda and is derailed at Carnate-Usmate station. Three people are injured.[45]
- 20 August – United States - A car was crushed between two light rail trains in Baltimore, Maryland. A 30-year-old man, and a 7-year-old boy were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and a female rail operator also suffered light injuries, specified as shock.[46][47][48] The woman who was driving the car was killed. The Baltimore Police say that she sped across the tracks but was hit by two trains going opposite ways, causing the car to be wedged in between both trains as they passed. The 7-year-old boy and 30-year-old man required extraction, as they were trapped in the crushed vehicle.[49][50][51]
- 27 August – United Kingdom – Llangennech derailment: A freight train derails and catches fire at Llangennech, Carmarthenshire.[52]
- 3 September – Netherlands – A passenger train collides with a lorry on a level crossing in Roermond. Two people are injured.[53]
- 14 September – Canada – A freight train carrying potash derails at a rail bridge near Hope, British Columbia. No injuries were reported.[54]
- 15 September – United States – A Union Pacific freight train derails on a bridge at , on the Kansas-Missouri state line in Kansas City. The incident, which saw the two lead locomotives, numbered 6539 and 9104, and five Autoracks derail, was recorded live by a web camera streaming to YouTube.[55]
- 20 September – United States – A New York City Subway train derailed after a suspected act of sabotage caused when a man clamped wooden planks onto the roadbed causing the train to derail. Three passengers were injured.[56][57][58]
- 26 September – United States – In Ferguson, Missouri, a cargo train derailed, sending 10 cars off of the tracks, and uprooting trees in its path. Reparations of the tracks started promptly after, as did debris cleanup. There were no injuries on the train as it was unoccupied. The train did come near the town of Elizabeth, but no houses were damaged. The cause of the derailment is currently unknown but is being investigated. The train was not carrying toxic, or hazardous materials, nor was it carrying chemicals or explosives so the scene of the derailment is not volatile.[59][60][61]
- 9 October – United States – In Pendleton, Indiana, a freight train slammed into a cargo truck which was stuck at a level crossing. The truck had already been evacuated, and attempts to free it from the track were made. There were no injuries or deaths, but the truck was obliterated and caught fire. The crash was caught on video.[62][63][64]
- 16 October – Germany – a locomotive and the NS Intercity Nieuwe Generatie it is hauling are derailed at Dreileben, injuring the driver of the locomotive.[65]
- 22 October – England – a Southern service derailed out of Bognor Regis early in the morning.
- 29 October – United States – A 25-car Kansas City Southern freight train derails in Mauriceville, Texas. Five tank cars are punctured and leak their contents, but one tank car contained a 'corrosive material', causing the evacuation of those within a mile (1600 m) of the crash site while those within a half-mile (800 m) of the evacuation zone were told to stay indoors. No injuries were reported.[66]
- 2 November – Netherlands – De Akkers metro station crash: a Rotterdam Metro train fails to stop at De Akkers metro station, crashes through a buffer stop and comes to rest partially atop a statue of a whale's tail.[67]
- 11 November – United Kingdom – Sheffield Freight Train Derailment: A freight train carrying cement derailed as it passed through Sheffield station causing significant damage to track and wayside equipment.[68]
- 24 November - United States - In Hamilton, Ohio, A Norfolk Southern 127 Train derailed at a 7 mile distance from the railroad crossing, the video was recorded by Youtuber Jaw Tooth. The train crash took place at 4:15 AM. The reason for the train crash is that the train was traveling 18 mph and derailed with many train cars derailed.[69]
- 1 December – United States – 10 cars of a Norfolk Southern freight train derail in Amherst, Ohio. No one is injured. Officials are determining the cause.[70]

- 6 January – Australia - In Bendigo, Victoria, a V/Line passenger train crashes into a ute.[71]
- 24 January – United States – In Ohio, 7 freight cars derail near Cincinnati. There were no injuries, but at least 1,000 US gallons (4,000 l; 800 imp gal) of diesel leaked.[72]
- 1 February – Canada – A Goderich–Exeter Railway freight train derails at the port of Goderich, Ontario, destroying a heritage building related to the fishing industry.[73]
- 12 February – Canada – A Canadian Pacific Railway freight train carrying potash derails at Crowsnest Pass in the Rocky Mountains. Two locomotives leave the tracks along with at least 48 freight cars, with five cars falling into Crowsnest Lake.[74]
- 20 February – Russia – In Skovorodinsky, Amur Oblast, 25 cars of a coal train derail on the Trans-Baikal Railway. There were no injuries.[75]
- 7 March – Pakistan – In Sukkur District, Sindh, a train derails, killing one, and injuring over 40 other passengers. The derailment occurred between the Rohri and Sangi railway stations.[76][77]
- 8 March – Sweden – In Gothenburg, a train carrying around 50 people derails after colliding with an empty bus that had become stuck at a level crossing. 3 people on the train suffered bruising.[78][79]
- 13 March – United Kingdom – A Class 507 passenger train operating for Merseyrail overruns the buffer stop and derails at Kirkby.[80] Twelve people sustained minor injuries.[81]
- 18 March – United States – Amtrak Coast Starlight (Train Number 11) hits a dump truck that got stuck on a crossing in Oakland, California. There were no injuries among the 111 train crew and passengers.[82][83]
- 26 March – Egypt – Sohag train collision: A passenger train runs into the rear of another near Sohag. At least 18 people are killed.[84]
- 31 March – Germany – Two coupled locomotives collide with the locomotive of a freight train near Wolfsburg. The trains had been running parallel before one ran into the side of the other, likely due to an incorrectly set switch, all locomotives were derailed and one overturned, there were no injuries.[85][86]
- 2 April – Taiwan – Hualien train derailment: A southbound 408 Taroko Express train derails inside the Chingshui Tunnel while approaching Chongde Station north of Hualien City after crashing into a maintenance truck that had rolled down a hill and fell onto the track, killing 49 and injuring 202 people in Taiwan's deadliest rail disaster since 1948.[87][88][89]
- 4 April – Czech Republic – 2021 Světec train crash: Express freight train No. 54334 of ORLEN Unipetrol Doprava (UNIDO), hauled by locomotive 753.740 collides with ČD Cargo freight train No. 66403, hauled by locomotive 123.023, at Světec Station; the driver of the ČD Cargo train jumps out of the locomotive and survives, but the driver of the UNIDO train dies on impact.
- 15 April – Egypt – A passenger train derails in Minya al-Qamh. Fifteen people are injured.[90]
- 18 April – Egypt – Toukh train accident: A passenger train derails in Toukh. 23 people are killed and 139 are injured.[91]
- 3 May – Mexico – Mexico City Metro overpass collapse: At least 24 people are killed and 70 are injured when a bridge carrying the Mexico City Metro collapses as a train crosses it.[92]
- 24 May – Malaysia – 2021 Kelana Jaya LRT collision: 213 people are injured including 47 seriously when two subway trains collide in Kuala Lumpur near the Petronas Twin Towers.[93]
- 4 June – China – A train collides with a construction site in Jinchang, Gansu, killing nine workers.[94]
- 7 June – Pakistan – 2021 Ghotki rail crash: The Millat Express, traveling from Karachi to Sargodha, derails between Daharki Station and Reti Station due to a failed weld joint in the rail. A minute after the derailment, the Sir Syed Express, traveling in the opposite direction from Rawalpindi to Karachi, hits the derailed Millat Express; 65 people are killed and around 150 are injured.[95]
- 16 June – France – A freight train conveying phosphoric acid collided with a HGV carrying a boat that became stranded on a level crossing near Rumigny, Ardennes, derailing seven cars and puncturing three. The train driver is slightly injured. The accident resulted in phosphoric acid pollution to an adjacent river, with dead fish observed a kilometre (0.6 miles) downstream.[96][97]
- 18 June - Queensland - In Queensland, Australia, A Leto train collided onto a ee16 train, 1 person was killed.[98]
- 9 July - Austria - A railcar strikes a fallen tree on the Mur Valley Railway and derails. One of the three carriages ends up on its side in the Mur. Seventeen people are injured.[99]
- 15 July - Belgium - A passenger train operated by Siemens Desiro AM08 derails near due to the trackbed being washed out in severe flooding that affected parts of Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands.[100]
- 15 July - United States - At 10:10 pm local time, a 96 car freight train, going about 60 mph, hits water flowing over about a quarter mile of the single Union Pacific track running between Las Vegas and Salt Lake City. Twelve cars derailed with about half of those tipping over and off the tracks. Three injured crewmembers had to wait atop the locomotive for almost 3 hours for help to arrive. Derailment occurred northeast of Lund, a railroad ghost town about 35 miles northwest of Cedar City, Utah, after strong and sustained thunderstorms in the area.[101][102]
- 20 July - China - During the 2021 Henan floods, a Line 5 Zhengzhou Metro train is trapped in a tunnel by floodwaters. Water enters the train cars and rises to chest height. Although 500 people were rescued, 14 drowned.[103]
- 4 August - Czech Republic - Milavče train crash: A DB Class 233 locomotive (223 066) hauling an international service from Munich to Prague passes a stop signal and collides head-on at Milavče with a ČD Class 844 RegioShark hauling a local service from Plzeň to Domažlice. Three people are killed and 42 are injured.
- 16 August - United States - In Washington County, Georgia, A Norfolk Southern train has derailed, 32 train cars were derailed spilling chlorine.[104]
- 26 August - United States - In St Paul, Minnesota, 3 trains (1 Union Pacific, 1 Canadian Pacific, And 1 BNSF) trains collided onto each other spilling chlorine into the river.[105]
- 29 August - United States - In Luling, Texas, a Union Pacific train hit a truck carrying a wind turbine. the truck driver escaped the truck, no problems reported.[106]
- 1 September - New Zealand - a remote-controlled locomotive and the wagon it was shunting plunged into the water at Picton.[107] The wagon was recovered the next day and the locomotive on 3 September.[108]
- 8 September - Turkey - Istanbul, Turkey, 2 Train collided onto each other, 7 people were injured.[109]
