The 1,200-ton barque ran aground and sank off the Auckland Islands, south of New Zealand. She was en route from Hobsons Bay, Victoria, to London carrying passengers, plus a cargo of wool, hides, and some 2,576 ounces of gold. Sixty-eight of those aboard (55 passengers and 13 crew) were lost. The remaining crew and passengers were marooned on the Auckland Islands for over a year and a half, and several of them did not survive the ordeal. They survivors were finally rescued by the whalingbrigAmherst (New Zealand) in November 1867. Several unsuccessful attempts were made to salvagegold from the wreck.[48]
