Jalgaon (About this soundpronunciation (help·info)) is a city in western India. The city is located in northern Maharashtra, and serves as the administrative headquarter of the Jalgaon district. Jalgaon is known as "Banana City of India" as the region contributes approximately two-thirds of Maharashtra's banana production.[1] It is also known as "Gold City" of Maharashtra. Jalgaon city is about 225 meters above sea level. The Girna River flows through the western part of the city. Jalgaon was divided in 1911,[2] with East Khandesh covering the territory that is now Jalgaon. After the 1956 reorganisation of India's states, East Khandesh became part of Bombay State.

Geography[]

Jalgaon City is the headquarters for the Jalgaon district. This city is the second biggest city in North Maharashtra after Nashik.[3]

Transport[]

Airways

Jalgaon airport was built in 1973 by the Public Works Department.[4] The Jalgaon Municipal council took over its operations in April 1997 and handed it over to the Maharashtra Airport Development Company in April 2007.[5] The Government of Maharashtra signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with The Airports Authority of India (AAI) to upgrade the existing airfield in July 2009.[6] The then President of India, Pratibha Patil laid the foundation stone for the development and expansion of the Jalgaon airport in June 2010.[7] Jalgaon has two flights one for Mumbai and one for Ahemdabad operated by Trujet airlines.

Railways

The city is served by Jalgaon Junction railway station. The railway connects the city to major cities like New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Jaipur and many more.

Roadways

National Highway 6 (Surat-Nagpur-Kolkata) passes through the city. Important cities of the state are also connected by state highways.

Education[]

North Maharashtra University is located 8 km away from the city center. Prominent Under/post-graduate colleges in city are Mooljee Jetha College and Nutan Maratha College. Engineering and polytechnic colleges include University Department of Chemical Technology at NMU, Government College of Engineering, Government Polytechnic, and G. H. Raisoni College of Engineering and Management.

Jalgaon has two medical colleges – Government Medical College and Dr. Ulhas Patil Medical College and Hospital, Jalgaon.[8]

Economy[]

Jalgaon has a Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) area with manufacturing units.

Tourist attractions[]

Gandhi Teerth (Gandhi Research Foundation) is a research institution and museum on Mahatma Gandhi, in Jalgaon, Maharashtra, India. Its initiated and promoted by the Gandhi Foundation. This is located 60 km away from Ajanta Caves. It was established on 25 March 2012.

Mehrun lake is a natural lake situated in Jalgaon with several parks nearby. Mahatma Gandhi Garden is located in the heart of the city of Jalgaon.
