Lnáře (German: Schlüsselburg) is a municipality and village in Strakonice District in the South Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic. It has about 700 inhabitants.

Administrative parts[]

The village of Zahorčice is an administrative part of Lnáře.

Etymology[]

The name Lnáře is derived from the Slavonic word lnář (meaning people who cultivate, process, or sale flax). The German name is derived from Schlüssel (means "key") and Burg (means "castle"). It refers to a key worn in coat of arms of the noble family of Schlüsselberg who probably founded the local aristocratic residence.[2]

Geography[]

Lnáře is located 35 kilometres (22 mi) northwest of Písek or 50 kilometres (31 mi) southeast of Plzeň, in the historical region of Prácheňsko.

The urban area is situated on the shores of three ponds, conneted by the Smolivecký Stream: Veský, Zámecký and Podhájský. The fourth large pond in the municipal territory is Nový in the southern part.

The highest point in the municipality is the hill Jezbyně with an altitude of 577 metres (1,893 ft).

History[]

The first written mention of Lnáře is from 1318, when it is written about the then owner of the village Habart of Lnáře. The village of Zahorčice is first mentioned in 1383. In the 14th century, the tradition of pond farming began. Pond farming and forestry became the main source of lordship income for next centuries. The first mention of the stronghold and the pond below it is from 1465.[2][3]

In 1899, the railroad to the towns of Blatná and Nepomuk was built. The construction of national route I/20 in 1931 and 1953–1954 (now part of the European route E49) through Lnáře further improved the transport accessibility of the municipality.[2]

In April of 1945, the 4th US Armored Division liberated parts of Lnáře. Other parts had already been liberated by the Soviet (Red) Army. A tense standoff took place. The US Forces were not permitted to help liberate Prague. A commemoration to the US liberation was placed on 6 May 1945 across from the Lnáře Chateau – at the site where US tanks arrived. A second plaque near-by commemorates Tank-Units of the 1st Czechoslovak Armoured Brigade who joined in the liberation in May 1945.[citation needed]

Next to them is located an English garden (4 hectares (10 acres) large with a few pools, many flower-beds of roses, a fountain, a small Baroque mosque with two low minarets and beautiful old trees with sculptures of the ancient gods carved by a famous Baroque sculptor. The New Chateau is adorned with great paintings of dozens Greek gods. The Old Stronghold is used for municipality needs, including as a gallery and library, as well as leasing space for doctors and masseuses and flats for rent.[citation needed]

Other sights include the monastery of the Discalced Augustinians founded in 1684 by the Church of the Holy Trinity. The church itself was built in 1599 and extended in the early Baroque style in 1666. Since 1965, the building are used as a psychiatric hospital.[4]
