Senator Barau I Jibrin (born 1959) is a Nigerian politician and member of the 9th National Assembly, from Kano State, Nigeria.^[1]

He represents Kano North Senatorial District. Senator Barau is the Chairman, Senate Committee on Appropriations and former Chairman of Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND in the 8th Senate.^[2]

Early life and education[]

Barau I Jibrin, was born in 1959, and he is a native of Kabo Township, Kabo Local Government Area, Kano State.

He holds a bachelor's degree in accounting, master's certificate in Financial Management and pricing, master's certificate in Management and Masters of business Administration (MBA).^[3] He also holds a certificate in Financial Management for business decisions from the prestigious Cornell University, United States.

After his initial higher studies, the Senator worked briefly in the accounting department of the Kano State Foundation, before he resigned in 1992 to begin his private flourishing business with vast interests in the manufacturing, insurance and the construction sectors of the Nigerian economy. His success in the private sector prepared him adequately to begin a process of championing the cause of his people through the instrumentality of politics.

Political life[]

Barau's passion for his people motivated him to contest election in 1999 to the House of Representatives to represent Tarauni Federal Constituency of Kano State which he won. While in the House of Representatives, he served as the Chairman, House Committee on Appropriations.^[4] He was also a member of the House of Representative's Committee on Power during that period.

After his tour of duty in the House of Representatives, he promptly went back to his private business, but not without sustaining his interest in the political engineering of his native Kano State.

In later years, he served as the Chairman of the Kano State Investment and Properties Ltd; a Company wholly owned by the Kano State Government.

He was one time Commissioner of Science and Technology in Kano State.^[5] He was appointed in 2001 to serve as a member of a committee set up by former President Olusegun Obasanjo to review the Nigeria's Budgetary process. In 2009, he was appointed by the Kano State Government as a member of the Kano State Business Incentive Committee; a position in which he acquainted himself credibly.

On his return to electoral contest in 2015, Senator Barau contested and won election to the Senate of Federal Republic of Nigeria, representing Kano North Senatorial District under the platform of All Progressives Congress.^[6] He was appointed same year as the Vice - Chairman Committee on Petroleum Resources (Downstream) of the Senate, and subsequently became the Chairman of the same Committee.^[5]

In the later part of 2016, he was reassigned to the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETfund as the Chairman of the Committee.

Additionally to this Senate Portfolio, he is a member of the Committee on Niger Delta, Industries, Land Transportation and Appropriations.

He is also the Secretary of Northern Senators Forum.

On the 3rd of October, 2019; he sponsored a bill - Federal Polytechnic Kabo.^[7]

[8] Abbo was elected as a member of the PDP but switched to the APC in November 2020.

[9] The PDP's Ekpenyong was elected Senator in 2019 but a Court of Appeal partially annulled the results and called a supplementary election in the affected areas. Ekpenyong won the ensuing rerun election and was sworn-in again in January 2020.

[10] Oduah was elected as a member of the PDP but switched to the APC in August 2021.

[11] The PDP's Douye Diri was elected Senator in 2019 but resigned in February 2020 after winning election to become Bayelsa State Governor. Cleopas won the ensuing bye-election and took office in December 2020.

[12] The PDP's Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo was elected Senator in 2019 but resigned in February 2020 after winning election to become Bayelsa State Deputy Governor. Dickson won the ensuing bye-election and took office in December 2020.

[13] The PDP's Rose Okoji Oko was elected Senator in 2019 but died in March 2020. Jarigbe and fellow PDP member Stephen Odey fought in court over the ensuing by-election's PDP nomination; Odey won both initial court decisions and the by-election before taking office late in December 2020. However, Jarigbe later won several court challenges which declared him the legitimate PDP nominee and thus Senator. Jarigbe took office in September 2021.

[14] Nwaoboshi was elected as a member of the PDP but switched to the APC in June 2021.

[15] The APC's Adebayo Clement Adeyeye was elected Senator in 2019 but the NASS Election Petition Tribunal awarded and Court of Appeal affirmed the win to Olujimi. She took office in November 2019.

[16] Due to disputes over alleged irregularities, the APC's Benjamin Uwajumogu was not sworn in until July 2019. Uwajumogu died in December 2019 leading to a bye-election. After disputes, Ibezim was awarded the bye-election victory and took office in April 2021.

[17] Due to disputes over the alleged forced declaration of his election, Okorocha was not sworn in until June 14, 2019.

[18] The PDP's Dino Melaye was elected Senator in 2019 but Adeyemi petitioned against the results and the NASS Election Petition Tribunal annulled the results and called a new election. Adeyemi won the ensuing rerun election and took office in December 2019.

[19] The APC's Adebayo Osinowo was elected Senator in 2019 but died in June 2020. Abiru won the ensuing bye-election and took office in December 2020.

[20] The APC's David Umaru was elected Senator in 2019 but the Supreme Court awarded the APC primary win to Musa making him Senator. He took office in July 2019.

[21] The APC's Ignatius Datong Longjan was elected Senator in 2019 but died in February 2020. Daduut won the ensuing bye-election and took office in December 2020.

[22] The APC's was elected Senator in 2019 but a Court of Appeal awarded the win to Danbaba. He took office in November 2019.

[23] Bwacha was elected as a member of the PDP but switched to the APC in February 2022.

[fnZamfara-24] Prior to inauguration, the APC's Zamfara votes were voided due to improper holding of party primaries. Thus the PDP runners-up took office. All three (Anka, Hassan Muhammed Gusau, Yaú) switched to the APC in June 2021. In February 2022, Muhammed Gusau resigned to become Zamfara Deputy Governor.
