David Darryl Wilson (Tamil: டேரல் டேவிட்; born 1970),[1] professionally known as Darryl David, is a Singaporean politician and former media personality. A member of the governing People's Action Party (PAP), he is a Member of the 14th Parliament and has been representing the Ang Mo Kio-Hougang ward of Ang Mo Kio Group Representation Constituency (GRC) since 2015.[2][3] David is also the chief executive officer of SJI International School.[4]

Education[]

David attended St. Michael's School, Raffles Institution, and Raffles Junior College.[4][5] He completed a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in English literature at the National University of Singapore[4] and holds a Master of Business Administration from Nanyang Technological University and a Master of Public Administration from the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy.[4][6]

Career[]

David was the host of the Channel 5 television game show, The Pyramid Game, in the 1990s.[7] He was the Deputy Director of the School of Design at Temasek Polytechnic before joining SJI International School in 2017.[4]

In 2009, David became the District Councillor of the North East Community Development Council.[7]

Political career[]

David was announced as a candidate of the People's Action Party (PAP) contesting in Ang Mo Kio GRC in the 2015 general election.[7] The PAP team was led to a resounding victory and David was elected to the 13th Parliament.[2] David is the deputy chairman of the Government Parliamentary Committee (GPC) for Culture, Community and Youth and Education. He also sits on the GPCs for Communications and Information and Social and Family Development.[4]

In his maiden parliamentary speech, David suggested passing a basic English test and doing mandatory community work as additional criteria to become a Singapore citizen.[8]

In the 2020 Budget debate, David called for more subsidies for after-school care even after children graduate from pre-school.[9]

Personal life[]

David is a Singaporean of Indian and Chinese heritage; his father is Indian and his mother is Chinese.[10] His parents divorced and he was raised by his mother.[4] David is bilingual in English and Chinese and he also speaks conversational Hokkien. David was previously married to radio personality Georgina Chang.[11] He has been married to lawyer Christina Sim since 2006 and they have two children.[12][13]
