Lim Biow Chuan (simplified Chinese: 林谋泉; traditional Chinese: 林謀泉; pinyin: Lín Móu Quán; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Lîm Bô͘-chôaⁿ; born 22 May 1963) is a Singaporean politician. He served as Deputy Speaker of the 13th parliament of Singapore from 25 January 2016 to 23 June 2020. He is also the current Member of Parliament (MP) for Mountbatten SMC since 7 May 2011 and formerly for the Mountbatten ward under the Marine Parade GRC from 5 May 2006 to 6 May 2011.

Education[]

Lim studied at Victoria School and had his junior college education at Temasek Junior College. Lim received his tertiary education at the National University of Singapore, where he obtained a LL.B. He was a classmate of Workers' Party politician Sylvia Lim.[1] In 1994, he became a founding partner of Tan Lim & Wong.

Career[]

Legal career[]

Lim is a lawyer and has been in legal practice since 1989. He is a senior partner in Derrick Wong & Lim BC LLP.[2]

Political career[]

Lim first became an MP after the 2006 general elections, where his party, the PAP, was awarded a walkover as Marine Parade GRC was uncontested. He is the president of the Consumers Association of Singapore (Case), the only politician on the central committee of the non-governmental organisation.[3][4] Lim is also the Marine Parade Town Council Chairman.

In 2013, he was appointed as a member of Singapore's Data Protection Advisory Committee.[5]

On 25 January 2016, Lim was elected as deputy speaker of the parliament, alongside Charles Chong.[6]

Controversy[]

At the height of the Jack Neo's extramarital affair scandal,[7] the press reported that Lim showed support for Neo saying "Since he is remorseful over this incident, he should be forgiven. Actually, a man who has a good career development, like himself, would find such scenarios unavoidable".[8] Lim later stated that he had been misquoted by the press.[8]

Personal life[]

Lim is married and has two daughters.[9] Lim has been serving as a church leader since 1993.[9]
