He Ting Ru (Chinese: 何廷儒; pinyin: Hé Tíngrú; born 1983)[1] is a Singaporean politician and lawyer. A member of the opposition Workers' Party, she is a Member of the 14th Parliament and has been representing the Buangkok ward of Sengkang GRC since 2020. During the 2020 general election, she led the team to another historic breakthrough when her team captured the second group representation constituency.[2]

Early life[]

He Ting Ru was educated at CHIJ Saint Nicholas Girls' School and Raffles Junior College. She graduated with an undergraduate degree in Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge before reading law in London.[3]

Political career[]

He Ting Ru began volunteering with the Workers' Party (WP) in the Paya Lebar division in 2011.[4] She was fielded as part of the 5-person team in the 2015 general election in Marine Parade GRC where the team garnered 35.9% of the votes as she lost to the PAP team there, including Tan Chuan Jin and Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong.[5]

She previously served as Secretary of the Workers' Party Youth Wing, and oversees the Youth Wing's outreach efforts in the areas of Service, Education and Heritage.[6]

At the 2020 general election, He Ting Ru stood as a candidate and leads the WP team in Sengkang GRC.[7] On 11 July, she was elected as a Member of the 14th Parliament of Singapore, representing Sengkang GRC.[8]

She was elected to the Workers’ Party Central Executive Committee as Deputy Organizing Secretary and was appointed as the chairman of Sengkang Town Council.[9][10]

Legal career[]

Since 2013, He Ting Ru has been Head of Legal and Communications of a listed multinational company which oversees legal and communications matters in Asia, North America, Europe and Africa.[11]

She trained and qualified as a solicitor of England and Wales with the Magic Circle firm Clifford Chance, working in London and Frankfurt, before joining a European financial institution in Singapore as a derivatives lawyer.[12][13]

Personal life[]

He Ting Ru married fellow WP member Terence Tan in January 2016. The couple were both part of the WP team contesting Marine Parade GRC in 2015. Together, they have three sons.[14][15]
