Chong Kee Hiong (Chinese: 鍾奇雄; pinyin: Zhōng Qí Xióng; born 1966) is a Singapore politician and businessman. A member of the Singapore-based People's Action Party (PAP), he is a Member of Parliament (MP) of Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC for Bishan East since 15 September 2015.
Education[]
Chong attended Raffles Institution and Raffles Junior College.[1] Chong accepted a scholarship from KPMG, which paid $5,000 a year.[1] He would later start his career at the firm. Chong holds a Bachelor of Accountancy with National University of Singapore and completed Harvard Business School’s Advanced Management Program in 2008. He is a member of the Institute of Singapore Chartered Accountants.[2]
Career[]
Chong is the Chief Executive Officer of Suntec Real Estate Investment Trust.[3] He was the chairman of NTUC Foodfare.[4] Before joining Suntec, Chong was the Chief Executive Officer of OUE Hospitality REIT Management Pte Ltd.[5] Prior to this, Chong was the CEO of The Ascott Limited (Ascott). Earlier in his career, he was the CFO of Raffles Holdings Limited.[5] Chong started his career in audit as a graduate assistant at KPMG in 1990.[1][5]
Political career[]
On 12 August 2015, the PAP announced Chong to be part of a five-member PAP team that would be contesting in Bishan–Toa Payoh GRC in the 2015 general election.[6] Chong was elected into Parliament following the 2015 Singapore General Elections,[7] when their five-member PAP team won 73.59% of the electorate's valid votes.[8] Chong and team remained representatives for Bishan–Toa Payoh GRC in the 2020 Singaporean general election, garnering 67.26% of the valid votes. He was then appointed Deputy Chairperson of National Development Government Parliamentary Committee (GPC) in the 14th Parliament of Singapore.[9]
He was appointed as the chairman of Bishan-Toa Payoh Town Council succeeding Hri Kumar and an advisor of the Bishan-Toa Payoh grassroots organisations.[10]
Personal life[]
Chong grew up in a two-room Singapore Improvement Trust flat.[4] He currently lives in a semi-detached house in Bishan East.[1][4] Chong is the youngest of 11 siblings.[4] He is married to Monica whom he met at KPMG and they have 4 sons.[1]
