Fatimiyya (Arabic: فاطمیة) are days in which Muslims (especially Shia Muslims) mourn owing to Fatimah al-Zahra's martyrdom.[1][2][3] Since there are two famous dates for the death of Fatimah al-Zahra, the days of Fatimiyya are distance between these two dates, the 13th to of Jumada al-Awwal to the 3rd of Jumada al-Thani. Fatimiyya period is a total of 6 days, 3 days in the month of Jamadi Al-Awal and 3 days in the month of Jumada Al-Thani. The first Fatimiyya is from the 13th to the 15th of Jumada al-Awwal and the second Fatimiyya is from the 3rd to the 5th of Jamadi Al-Thani.[4][5] some shia mourning ten days for her.[6]

Time of mourning[]

In Shia Islamic tradition, whilst a specific number of days in regards to lamentation/mourning is not established, periods such as the "first 10-days" (from the 10th to the 20th of Jumada I) or the "second 10-days" (from the 1st to the 10th of Jumada II) of the Fatimiyya have in recent years been commemorated much like the "first 10-days of Muharram", though there is no hadith (tradition) mentioning this duration explicitly. The remarkable position of Fatimah al-Zahra as Prophet Muhammad's daughter, the hardships she faced and her demise whilst defending Imam Ali, are regarded as reasons behind the importance given to the annual remembrance by Shia Muslims.[7][8]

Fatimiyya in other countries[]

Apart from Iran and Iraq, Fatimiyya is held in other countries, too; such as: India, Pakistan,[9] Australia,[10] Azerbaijan, Tajikistan.[11] There are also such related centers in Europe, such as Germany (the Islamic center of Hamburg),[12] England (Islamic center of England), Sweden and so on.[13]

Differences in date[]

There have been mentioned diverse reasons as the probable cause(s) of being such differences in her demise date; among:

  • At those old times, the quotation of many historical events was orally—not in written—which can be with inaccurate information.
  • Considering being involved of wars for Muslims in that time, didn't make them to have complete attention to have sufficient care in recording the dates of such occurrences.[14][15]
  • The grammar of the Arabic script initially lacked any symbols, including punctuation and Diacritic.[16] Hence, most of its letters have common and similar shapes. For this reason, "seventy" (Arabic: سبعون) and "ninety" (Arabic: تسعون) were written same, which was not distinguishable for historians of later periods.[17]
  • The probability of distorting its precise time by partial individuals.[18]
