Mazıdağı (Kurdish: Şemrex[3]) is a town and district of Mardin Province in the southeastern Anatolia region of Turkey. Sunni Muslim Kurdish people form a majority in this district.

Mazıdağı has been the administrative name since the Ottoman period. The native name of the central town is Şemrex. At the end of the 14th century, Timur attacked the town, which was inhabited by the Yezidis at the time, and put its people to the sword.[4]

Many Kurdish inhabitants moved to the provinces centre such as Diyarbakır, Mardin and Batman due to poverty and the conflict between the Turkish government and the PKK.[citation needed]

Politics[]

In the local elections of 2009 Hasip Aktas was elected as mayor as a member of the Democratic Society Party (DTP) with %57 of all votes. In the local elections of 2014 Necia Yıldırım from the DTP became Mayor.[5] In the municipal elections of 2019, Nalan Özaydın from the Peoples' Democratic Party was elected as Mayor of Mazidagi.[6] On the 15 November 2019 she was detained over alleged terror links.[7] The next day she was dismissed.[8] The current District Governor is Mustafa Dinç.

Economy[]

Mazıdağı region is very rich in phosphate mines.[9]
