The Ismail Sabri cabinet (Malay: Kabinet Ismail Sabri) has been formed on 21 August 2021 following the appointment of Ismail Sabri Yaakob as Prime Minister of Malaysia. This is the first Barisan Nasional (BN) cabinet following the coalition's crushing defeat at the 14th general election. Other than BN, this cabinet is fully endorsed by the Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS),[1][2] Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS),[3] Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) and four independent members of the lower house,[b] with conditional support from the Malaysian United Indigenous Party (PPBM), party from Perikatan Nasional coalition (PN).[4]

History[]

PPBM president Muhyiddin Yassin became the eighth Prime Minister on 1 March 2020 amid a political crisis that occurred following the party's withdrawal from the Pakatan Harapan (PH) alliance.[5][6] The main object of the new cabinet was to overcome the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Although Muhyiddin and his government was praised by the World Health Organization (WHO) for overcoming the first wave, the government faced harsh criticisms from the public due to its mismanagement of the second and third wave, which recorded rocketing new cases and deaths.[7]

PPBM then faced internal conflicts with UMNO who had the most seats within the cabinet but did not led the government.[8] The UMNO firstly made an announcement to withdraw its supports to the Muhyiddin cabinet on 8 July 2021,[9] and again on 3 August.[10][11][12] Muhyiddin resigned as the Prime Minister after losing the majority.[13][14]

On 20 August, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong has named UMNO vice president Ismail Sabri Yaakob as the nation's ninth Prime Minister in accordance with Article 40(2)(a) and Article 43(2)(a) of the Federal Constitution after being satisfied that he commanded the confidence of the majority in Parliament,[15][16] in which 114 of 220 members of the Dewan Rakyat (MPs) voted for him. He was formally appointed and sworn in before the Yang di-Pertuan Agong at the Istana Negara on the afternoon of 21 August 2021.[17]

Composition[]

On 27 August 2021, Ismail Sabri announced his Cabinet of 31 ministers and 38 deputy ministers. The position of Deputy Prime Minister was kept vacant. Instead, the Senior Ministers will deputise for the Prime Minister in his absence should such necessity arise.

The new ministers and deputy ministers were sworn in at 2:30pm on 30 August 2021, a day before the country's Merdeka celebration.

Deputy Minister for Education Mohamad Alamin skipped the ceremony as he was tested COVID-19 positive.[18] Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob as well as Minister for Entrepreneurship Development and Cooperative Noh Omar was also unable to attend the ceremony as they had been in close contact with a COVID-19 patient.[19][20]
